Ahead of G7 Summit, Canadian PM Carney urges middle powers to build a "third path with impact" beyond US
Dublin [Ireland], June 14 (ANI): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during a high-profile diplomatic visit to Ireland, has called for deeper cooperation among middle powers, urging them to avoid competing for alignment with the United States and instead build a unified 'third path with impact' ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit.
Delivering an address at Trinity College in Dublin on Saturday, PM Carney highlighted that Canada and the European Union together possess significant economic, military and demographic strength capable of shaping global outcomes.
The Canadian Prime Minister noted that the combined population of Canada and the EU is more than twice that of the United States, while their economies are comparable in scale and their combined defence comfortably surpasses that of China.
Building on this structural comparison, he asserted that nations positioned outside the tier of global superpowers can effectively amplify their geopolitical leverage by forging unified fronts with ideologically aligned allies.

that “like Mexico, Canada remains open to deeper integration, including options for Fortress North America in (certain) sectors.” He added that “offers are on the table,” though he did not specify what they were.
Even with a review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) on the horizon, Carney is surely aware that it’s politically risky to advocate for closer ties with the United States when the country under President Donald Trump is considered a threat to Canadian sovereignty.
There is historical precedent for Canadian politicians to face backlash after calling for deeper integration with the U.S.

“It’s a big game today and we’re going to win,” is what Carney told reporters he relayed to the president in a phone call Tuesday over the latest border dispute.

That did not work out. Another loss to Trump and the United States. In their preliminary round game against the Americans at the Olympics in Milan,Canada’s women’s hockey team got rocked 5-0.

So, hoping for gold-medal games, Carney, who wasnot good luck for the Blue Jaysor the Edmonton Oilers in their championship quests, still has a chance for redemption.
Meanwhile, the temperature rose Monday when Trump went to Truth Social to complain about theready-to-open Gordie Howe International Bridge, saying “Canada is building a massive …

On April 28, 2025, Canadians elected a rookie politician, Mark Carney, as an MP and prime minister.
Quite a journey from a distinguished career in business and central banking to leader of a moribund Liberal Party of Canada and the highest office in the land.
A fellow traveller on the last part of that journey, Donald Trump, provided a major boost to Mr. Carney’s political prospects. With his tariff attacks and assaults on global institutions, NATO, international trade rules, and Canadian sovereignty — not to mention democracy, dignity and decency — Trump made himself, and who was best qualified to deal with him, the ballot question in the election.
Canadians’ answer was Mark Carney. A year on, the Carney government has a sizable lead in the public opinion polls coupled with a new parliamentary majority after several floor crossings and three by-election vict…

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney became a symbol of middle power resistance after a celebrated speech earlier this year, but he is expected to be more muted in his criticism of US President Donald Trump at an upcoming summit in Europe.

But the Group of Seven summit of industrialized democracies that begins Monday in France comes ahead of the scheduled July 1 review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, the latest iteration of the North American free-trade pact that has intertwined the economies of the United States, Mexico and Canada since the early 1990s. It is a crucial moment in trade talks, and Trump said this week that he may not renew the deal.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for a “new partnership” with the United States to “help make America great again,” in a speech delivered in New York on Thursday.
Carney said that while the world is undergoing a “rupture” as the US transforms its commercial relationships, working closely with Canada in specific sectors, including aluminum, automobiles and critical minerals, would strengthen both countries.
Amid an ongoing trade war with the US, Carney has vowed to double Canadian exports to other markets in the next decade and signed more than 20 economic and security deals in the last year.
As Carney spoke in New York, US trade officials were in Mexico City in talks with officials there about overhauling the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade. The discussions for now exclude Canada.
After President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada as the 51st state, Carney described Canada’s ties to…

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that the “new world order will be built from Europe” with his country playing a key role in comments that echo a speech earlier in the year interpreted as a criticism of President Donald Trump.
During a visit to Ireland, Carney said that that Canada was “the most European of non-European countries, and we are transforming our cooperation with the EU.”
