Final push for votes as challenger to Hungary’s Orbán scents victory
With Hungary’s intensely contested and pivotal election looming, Péter Magyar is mounting a decisive bid to unseat Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party after 16 years of uninterrupted rule. The opposition leader urged supporters to “brace for the final 100m” as he prepared for his last campaign stop in Debrecen, a key northern city, while Orbán planned to address a rally in Budapest. Polls suggest Magyar holds a strong lead, but Orbán remains confident, buoyed by recent support from U.S. Vice-President JD Vance and President Donald Trump’s promise to bolster Hungary’s economy.
On Friday night, the capital’s Heroes’ Square became a focal point for a massive anti-Fidesz gathering. Tens of thousands of citizens flocked to the event, signaling a growing wave of dissent. “I sense something is about to shift,” said Fanni, a first-time voter from a southern village, as she joined her mother in the crowd. “Though I’d prefer Magyar in an ideal world, this is our last chance to change the status quo.” Magyar’s movement, Tisza, has drawn from diverse political back…

The delegates at Fidesz's congress re-elected Viktor Orbán as party chairman (he was the only nominee) for one more year, and also approved thefour deputy chairson Saturday. According to the results of the vote, 729 delegates voted for Viktor Orbán, while eight did not submit a vote. Except for a three-year period between 2000-2003, Orbán has been at the helm of the party since 1993.
Although he hadaddressed the delegatesearlier in the day as well, Orbán spoke again briefly after the result was announced. He started by expressing his gratitude for the trust placed in him. He said that he considered both Fidesz and the KDNP (Christian Democratic People’s Party, Fidesz’s longtime coalition partner) to be parties willing to devote even an entire decade to creating a sovereign Hungary.
According to him, they had waited and worked for 22 years until the “master of history” granted them the power to govern, so they would be able to secure sovereignty for their “beloved homeland", and their time finally came in 2010.
He felt that this was Hungary’s last chance before it was “swallowed up by the bottomless pit that is th…

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar calls election a referendum ...
Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar said Thursday that a crucial election next week will be a “referendum” on the country’s future. He is facing pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the vote, which, according to Magyar, will decide whether Hungary continues on its drift toward Eastern autocracies, or can retake its place among the democratic societies of Europe.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on July 25 that Budapest proposes "strategic cooperation" with Ukraine instead of full European Union integration, arguing that Kyiv's accession would drag the war into the heart of Europe.
"EU membership for
Ukraine
would drag the war into the heart of
Europe
, a risk our families should not have to face," Orban
wrote
on X. "These times call for calm judgement, not theatrical threats."
The Hungarian leader described Hungary's proposed partnership as "pragmatic, flexible, and rooted in mutual interest — not irreversible integration."
Orban, widely viewed as the EU's most pro-Russian leader, called Ukraine a "buffer state" and warned that
Hungary
will not accept a similar position.
"Today, Ukraine's fate is to be a buffer state b…
After Orbán: why Péter Magyar would not be an easy partner for the EU
After Orbán: why Péter Magyar would not be an easy partner for the EU
Péter Magyar, the Hungarian politician most likely to defeat Viktor Orbán, promises “regime change” but signals continuity on several core policies. The European Union should manage expectations and prepare for a more complex relationship than a simple post-Orbán reset.
With less than two months to go before Hungary’s 12 April elections, the Tisza party led by Péter Magyaris polling aheadof Orban’s Fidesz. For the first time since 2010, a change of government appears genuinely possible.
The stakes are high. A fifth consecutive term for Orbán would further entrench whatthe European Parliament has described as a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”at the heart of Europe, and reinforce Budapest’s capacity to obstruct common EU positions, including on security. But Orbán’s defeat would not automatically translate into smooth relations with Brussels.
This raises the question of what a Magyar-led government would look like in practice. A former Fidesz member and government official, and the former spouse of Orbán's ex-EU Affairs and Justice Minister, Magyar entered politics in early 2024. Running on ananti-corrupt…

Viktor Orbán Steps Aside from Parliament to Lead Fidesz Renewal
“Discussions are in full swing regarding the renewal of the national movement, our parliamentary group, and the protection of our communities,” said Viktor Orbán in a video posted to his social media page.
“We need the opinions, experiences, and willingness to act of every member of our community,” said the prime minister. “We have also made some important decisions: we are radically restructuring our parliamentary faction. The faction will be formed on Monday. Its leader will be Gergely Gulyás,” announced Viktor Orbán. He then stated:
“We need me now not in parliament, but in the reorganization of the national movement,” he added.
The outgoing prime minister also announced that a national council meeting will be held next week, and the leadership election congress, originally scheduled for the fall, will be moved up to June. “I have led our community for nearly four decades; during this time, we have experienced successes and failures, electoral victories and defeats,” Orbán recalled. He then emphasized:
“One thing, however, has not changed: this camp has always been Hungary’s most united and cohesive political c…

Final Push for Votes as Challenger to Hungary’s Orbán Senses Victory
As Hungary approaches a critical electoral moment, the political landscape is shifting dramatically. Péter Magyar’s opposition movement has emerged as a formidable challenger to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has held power for over a decade. Recent polls indicate that Magyar’s coalition is gaining traction, stirring hopes among supporters for a potential victory.
Rising Support for the Opposition
Tens of thousands of anti-Orbán supporters gathered in Heroes’ Square in Budapest, demonstrating a palpable enthusiasm for change. The rally, marked by vibrant displays of solidarity, signifies a growing discontent with Orbán’s administration, which has faced criticism for its authoritarian tendencies and controversial policies. Magyar’s campaign has resonated with a diverse electorate, uniting various factions that have long opposed the ruling party.
Polls suggest that Magyar’s coalition is not only competitive but may lead to a significant shift in Hungary’s political dynamics. The opposition has capitalized on widespread dissatisfaction regarding …
