Artemis
Artemis
Under Artemis, NASA will send astronauts on increasingly difficult missions to explore more of the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars.
Quick Facts
Artemis II, the first crewed Artemis flight, marks a key step toward long‑term return to the Moon and future missions to Mars.
During Artemis I, the SLS (Space Launch System), roared into the night sky and sent the Orion spacecraft on a 1.4-million-mile journey beyond the Moon and back.
NASA, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State and seven other initial signatory nations, established the Artemis Accords in 2020.
Strengthening Artemis
To achieve the national goal of landing American astronauts on the surface of the Moon and maintaining U.S. superiority in exploration and discovery, NASA is increasing its cadence of missions under the Artemis program, standardizing the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket configuration, and adding a new mission.

On the heels of the successful Artemis II mission to orbit the moon, NASA has announced the next group of astronauts who will comprise the crew of the Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2027.
Four astronauts will follow in the footsteps of Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot
Victor Glover
and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, who went deeper into space than any humans in history during the
Artemis II mission
in April.
They entered the moon’s orbit during their
historic 10-day mission

“What an extraordinary experience as human beings, the things we saw,” Hansen
said on TODAY
April 30.
Now, the next group of astronauts is ready for their time in the spotlight, with a mission aimed not toward the moon, but within Earth’s orbit.
Here’s what to know about the crew and the Artemis III mission.

Leading the mission is commander Randy Bresnik, a veteran astronaut with previous spaceflight experience. He will be joined by pilot Luca Parmitano of the Italian Space Agency, one of Europe’s most experienced astronauts with more than 300 days in space.
NASA astronauts Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio will serve as mission specialists, supporting spacecraft operations, docking demonstrations and systems testing.
Agency officials said Artemis III is designed as a deliberate risk-reduction mission, focused on testing navigation, communications, power systems and …

Who are the Artemis 3 astronauts? NASA announcement coming June 9
Artemis programme is NASA’s most ambitious human spaceflight effort in decades
The next most anticipated crewed mission to the Moon by humans in the future would definitely be one that features human faces, more specifically four of them. NASA is scheduling to announce the names of the four astronauts who have been chosen for Artemis 3 on June 9.
The names of the four astronauts picked for this exciting venture will be announced during the Artemis 3 Crew Announcement and Update event at 11am ET.
The Artemis programme is NASA’s most ambitious human spaceflight effort in decades. After a bunch of years of development, testing and planning, the agency is finally close enough to Artemis 3 that it’s ready to say who the astronauts are that will make the journey.
These four people are going to get a historic role, like landing close to the moon’s south pole and then doing boots-on-the-ground work at a future lunar base.
NASA’s Artemis updates don’t really end at the crew reveal. The agency also said it is handing out more than $1 billion in fresh contracts for rovers, lunar landers, plus other vehicles that are basic…

Taking another step toward one of the most complex human spaceflight missions in recent history, NASA on Tuesday provided new Artemis III details and announced the four prime crew members and a backup for the test flight. The mission will undertake a series of challenging tests in Earth orbit in 2027, essential for Artemis IV, the first planned crewed mission to the lunar South Pole in 2028.
During Artemis III, the agency’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket will launch the Orion spacecraft and its crew from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to low Earth orbit. After Orion systems checkouts, the spacecraft will, for the first time, demonstrate rendezvous and docking capabilities with test versions from one, or both, American commercial human landing systems in development by Blue Origin and SpaceX. NASA on Tuesday revealed the four astronauts who will join the next Artemis mission — a key, two-week flight that will aim to test out various technologies considered vital to putting astronauts back on the surface of the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.
The crew, set to launch as soon as late 2027, includes three NASA astronauts — first-time space flier Andre Douglas,
record-setting astronaut
Frank Rubio, and veteran flier and test pilot Randy Bresnik — as well as Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano with the European Space Agency.
Artemis III is designed to serve as a
precursor mission
to a moon landing, testing out how the NASA-built Orion spacecraft will dock with a lunar lander. The primary goal of the flight, the space agency says, is to “reduce risk” heading into an actual lunar touchdown, which NASA hopes will take place as soon as 2028.
In order to reach the moon’s surface, astronauts w…
