has landed in fresh legal trouble after Kolkata Police registered an FIR over an alleged inflammatory speech delivered ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The speech in question was made in March from a protest stage in Kolkata, where Banerjee allegedly warned that if a particular community united, it could have serious consequences for others. A businessman subsequently lodged a complaint, alleging that the remarks could incite communal tensions. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under non-bailable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
"The complainant alleged that Banerjee's statements had the potential to disturb peace and adversely affect communal harmony and democratic norms," he said.
This marks the second FIR registered against the former Chief Minister. The earlier case is related to her comments on India-Bangladesh relations.
Officials said that under Section 196 of the BNS, the police are empowered to make an arrest without a warrant in such cases. However, no arrest has been made so far.

EW DELHI, June 12: The police have registered a fresh FIR against the former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee based on a complaint lodged earlier by a Kolkata resident for allegedly promoting communal disharmony and create "fear, misunderstanding and tension" among the people through some of her pre-election speeches.

The FIR against her was registered on Friday on her political speech in March 2026. Mamata had warned that if a particular community come together, it can have dire consequences for others. Quoting her public speeches, a complaint was filed at Hare Street Police Station by a Kolkata resident, which has now been treated as FIR by Kolkata Police.
