Yadav: Sariska a global example of successful species restoration
Yadav: Sariska a global example of successful species restoration Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav on Sunday inaugurated a national workshop on tiger reintroduction and released three publications on tiger conservation and Project Cheetah in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. The event was held to mark 18 years since the reintroduction of tigers at the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the state. Yadav described the Sariska tiger reintroduction programme as a historic milestone in wildlife conservation, noting the area went from zero tigers in 2008 to 56 currently. He said the project represents the world’s first successful scientific reintroduction of tigers into a landscape where the species had become locally extinct. Across the country, the number of tiger reserves has increased from 46 to 58 in the last decade. Addressing the workshop, the minister said tiger conservation was not merely about protecting a single species, but about conserving forests, watersheds and the rich biodiversity that shares the tiger’s habitat. “Sariska today serves as a global example of successful species restoration and offers valuable lessons for future conservation initiatives,” he said, noting that…

Government flags priority intervention need in 25 of 58 tiger reserves with ... Even as India’s tiger population has steadily risen over the years, about 25 of its 58 tiger reserves, which are low on tigers, have no tigers or low prey abundance, need priority interventions to establish long-term viable tiger populations, flagged a new Environment Ministry report. The Centre also said of the 12 tiger reserves where tiger reintroductions or supplementation has happened through translocation of tigers, outcomes have not always been successful and called for rigorous science-backed reintroductions. To mark 18 years of tiger reintroduction at the Sariska tiger reserve, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav released the two reports — on the roadmap for active tiger management and learnings from tiger reintroductions — at an event in Alwar. Sariska, which at present has 56 tigers, had lost all its big cats in the mid-2000’s because of poaching and habitat loss, and it was the first time tigers were moved from another reserve to repopulate a habitat. The Centre identified 25 tiger reserves across the country as “potential recipient sites” — reserves wit…

Satkosia, Rajaji lag behind in tiger revival despite Sariska ... Pic-OP Alwar/Satkosia :Unlike tiger reserves such as Sariska in Alwar and Panna in Madhya Pradesh, where India’s tiger reintroduction and population recovery programmes have seen immense success, Satkosia in Odisha and Rajaji in Uttarakhand are yet to see similar results, according to a new report. The reintroduction initiative, which began in 2008 at Sariska, helped increase the population from zero to 56 as of now. At Panna, the programme, which kicked off in 2009, led to the rise in tiger population from zero to 88. However, at Satkosia, where two tigers were reintroduced in 2018, the current population is zero. Note that there was already a tiger present at the site before the beginning of the initiative. At Rajaji (western part), where five tigers were introduced in 2020, the population currently remains the same. No tigers inhabited the location before the reintroduction. These are findings of the ‘Reintroduction and Recovery of Tigers in India’, which is one of the three reports released by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav Sunday . The report documents India’s experience in restoring tiger populatio…

Recent tiger augmentation efforts in Satkosia Tiger Reserve, India received mixed responses from the local communities, causing a stalemate in its progress. As a part of the adaptive management strategy, it was required to assess the concerns and issues to provide a practical solution. Hence, we analyzed the attitude of the people toward conservation in general and tiger specifically. We used structured questionnaire surve…
