The head of the World Health Organization has warned that extreme heat may be responsible for hundreds of additional deaths across Europe.
"More than 1300 excess deaths have been recorded since 21 June linked to high temperatures in Europe," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X.
"Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average. Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling," he wrote.

Temperature records have been broken across Europe this week, including in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, with the mercury reaching around or above 40C.
Tedros said heat stress was often called "the silent killer" and that European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for such temperatures.
Earlier in the week, Tedros warned around 500,000 people die each year worldwide from heat-related causes, adding that many of those deaths could be prevented.

The year 2024 broke several temperature records: it was the hottest ever recorded, and its summer was also the warmest to date.
A study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), has estimated that 62,775 heat-related deaths occurred in Europe between 1 June and 30 September of that year. These mortality figures are 23.6% higher than the approximately 50,800 estimated for the summer of 2023, and 8.1% lower than the nearly 67,900 estimated for the summer of 2022.

Dozens dead, 200 million hit as record heatwave sweeps Europe
A heatwave that scorched western Europe for a week moved east on Saturday, shattering national temperature records, killing dozens of people, overwhelming hospitals and buckling roads.Scientists have warnedthat what feels extraordinary today may soon become routine.
Nearly 200 million people experiencedtemperatures above 35 degrees Celsiuson Saturday alone. The question being asked from London to Prague is no longer whether climate change is making summers worse. It is how much worse they will get.
The scale of Saturday’s records was striking even by the standards of a continent that has grown used to summer extremes.
In France, authorities said around 40 people had drowned in the past week, many swimming in unsupervised areas to escape the heat. Paris hospitals recorded nearly 3,000 emergency room visits for a second consecutive day, about a third above normal. The Paris public hospital authority activated its emergency response plan across all 38 hospitals, with phone calls to medical dispatch centres running nearly 80 per cent higher than the same period last year.
The authority’s director, Nicolas Revel, said he…

BRUSSELS — Once the heat dissipates, Europe will start counting its dead.
The extraordinary temperatures sweeping the western part of the continent this week will have killed hundreds, likely thousands, more than two decades after the deadly summer of 2003 alerted governments to the dangers of extreme heat.
While a first estimate of the death toll will take weeks, Spanish researchers
are already attributing
more than 210 fatalities between Sunday and Wednesday to the heat.

In France, individual tragedies are starting to make headlines: An elderly man working outdoors
died on Sunday
; two toddlers
died of cardiac arrest
in an overheating car on Monday; and a three-year-old boy was
found dead on Wednesday
in a hot car, where he was reportedly hiding from his parents instead of taking a nap as he was told.
That extreme temperatures kill shouldn’t be news to European authorities. In 2003, heat killed some 70,000 people, startling governments into preparing action plans.
Yet two decades later, heat deaths are still reaching into the tens of thousands every year. Although solid global data is hard to come by, estimates…

"Driven by climate change and global warming, the phenomenon of the 'once-in-a-generation' heatwave is now occurring nearly annual. We were warned."

Deaths surged by nearly a third in France during the hottest week of a record heatwave last month, the country’s public health authority has said.
At least 2,000 more deaths were reported than in the previous week when temperatures were already climbing and filling emergency wards with heat victims.

Funeral homes overwhelmed as France counts human cost of heatwave
As the deadly heatwave moves eastward to other parts of Europe, France is counting the human cost the high temperatures have left behind. French health authorities have reported around 1,000 excess deaths during the heatwave. Hospitals are overflowing with patients and funeral homes are struggling to keep up.
Europe warmed 2.2°C above pre-industrial levels — twice the global average. France alone lost 11,000 people in 2003 and is now mobilizing its military for wildfires.

Europe is heading into its second deadly heatwave in two months after several countries experienced a
“heat dome”
last month with record-breaking temperatures that killed several people across the continent.
Forecasters have warned that temperatures could rise further this month, as climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and intense. Governments across Europe have taken precautionary measures, including cancelling some public events, while some schools have closed or modified their timetables.

Europe’s Heat Wave Fuels Fears of a Record-Hot Year
As of Monday, at least 18 people died in France, including two children and three elderly people, amid the heatwave.
A two-year-old and a four-year-old were found unconscious by their mother in the family car in the southeast French town of Carpentras on Monday, according to local prosecutor Hélène Mourges. First responders were unable to resuscitate the children. Temperatures in Carpentras exceeded 102.2°F (39°C) on Monday afternoon. Mourges said authorities are still investigating the deaths but that heat is the leading line of inquiry.

Paris heatwave: 109 deaths
Deadly Heatwave Grips Paris
According to
Novyny.live
: A severe heatwave in Paris has pushed funeral homes to their limits after the city recorded 109 deaths in just 24 hours. This extreme event follows temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels, a trend seen not only in France but across Europe. In several French regions, thermometers climbed above 40°C, sharply increasing mortality rates.
The situation is especially critical in Paris, where two funeral homes are struggling to cope with the surge.
“While demand is rising in other parts of France, the most intense pressure remains in Paris,” noted expert Elisabeth Charrier.
Europe's Extreme Heat Crisis
Europe is in the grip of a record-breaking heatwave, with soaring temperatures leading to loss of life. In Germany, the town of Meckern-Drewitz hit 41.5°C. Denmark recorded 37°C, its highest temperature since 1874. The Czech Republic also saw major highs, reaching 40.8°C. Italy has declared a 'red' alert…

A fourth child has died in France as Europe is grappling with an unprecedented heatwave that has overwhelmed hospitals and prompted several countries to issue their first-ever red weather alerts.
An 18-month-old baby died on Tuesday in Marseille after being discovered inside a car in the parking lot of La Timone university medical campus.
The child's parent forgot him in the vehicle on his way to work, French authorities said.
It comes as at least 101million Europeans have roasted for several days in temperatures of more than 35C, with an estimated few hundred people, including children, thought to have died as a result of heat-related illnesses and drownings while trying to cool off.
The sweltering conditions have also sparked fights over air conditioning units and led Paris to impose analcoholban.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION threatened EUROPE in Rome, Lazio, Italy
The head of the World Health Organization has warned that extreme heat may be responsible for hundreds of additional deaths across Europe.
"More than 1300 excess deaths have been recorded since 21 June linked to high temperatures in Europe," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X.
"Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average. Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling," he wrote.
"Driven by climate change and global warming, the phenomenon of the 'once-in-a-generation' heatwave is now occurring nearly annual. We were warned."

France: Drowning deaths climb amid record-breaking heatwave
France's prolonged heatwave has now claimed the life of a fourth child, while the overall death toll continues to rise. In Paris, an adult man was found unresponsive in the Canal Saint-Martin after reportedly swimming outside the designated area. As Europe's most severe heatwave on record continues, hospitals are admitting growing numbers of patients and emergency departments remain under intense pressure. According to Professor emeritus at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, unless global CO₂ emissions are significantly reduced, future heatwaves are likely to become even more extreme.
