Switzerland is probably best known for its scenery, its neutrality and its prosperity. But on Sunday, voters in the Alpine country will decide whether to close ranks entirely by ending virtually all immigration and capping the population at 10 million from the current 9.1 million by 2050.
If the measure is approved, the government will have to start rejecting asylum seekers and family reunification applications as soon as the population hits 9.5 million.
More drastic action will be required once the 10 million threshold is reached, which experts say could happen by 2040. In order to stick to the cap, the government would have to sever some ties with the European Union, including an agreement that guarantees the free movement of people between Switzerland and the bloc.
Immigration reform has become a major issue in countries across Europe, and Switzerland is no exception. The proposal, calle…

Once upon a time, in the town of Maienfeld, high up in the Swiss Alps, there lived an orphan with a heart of gold. A cruel aunt sent her off to seek her fortune in crowded, sooty Frankfurt, but city life nearly killed her, so she was swiftly returned to the fresh mountain air.
Since then, the world has come to Heidi. From the train station in Maienfeld, near the border with Liechtenstein, a footpath leads up to Heididorf, a reproduction of the idyllic farm where Johanna Spyri’s beloved children’s novel—named for its protagonist and published in 1880—is set. On a cold Saturday in late March, two women from Hong Kong hiked up to pay homage to the nineteen-seventies Japanese anime adaptation, which in East Asia has made “Heidi” nearly as famous as “Harry Potter.” A family of five from Kerala, India, asked me to take their photograph as they posed against the jagged peaks. The hills resounded with Spanish as another family descended to a “Heidi”-themed restaurant, whose parking lot accommodates double-decker tour buses.
At the base of the mountain, elected …

Switzerland is to hold a landmark vote on a
right-wing
party’s proposal to restrict the nation’s population to 10 million,
amid divisions
over immigration.
The proposal, put forward by the country’s largest political grouping the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), would require the government to act before the population – currently at 9.1 million – rises to the proposed 10 million upper limit.
If the vote, due to be held on June 14, is passed, the government would have to refuse entry to newcomers including asylum seekers and the families of foreign residents once the population reaches 9.5 million.
If the population hits 10 million, the government would be forced to end its free-movement agreement with the European Union (EU), which is Switzerland’s largest trading partner.
While Switzerland is not an EU member, the nation is integrated through over…

The Swiss appeared Sunday to have voted down a divisive anti-immigration proposal to cap the country's population, early projections showed.
Shortly after polls closed at noon (1000 GMT), initial projections from the gfs.bern institute indicated around 55 percent opposition to the initiative, which had sparked warnings of "chaos" and devastating impacts for the Swiss economy and European Union relations.
"We are very relieved and happy. This is an important result for our country and for our relations with the EU," Monika Ruhl, director of the employers' organisation economiesuisse, told public broadcaster RTS.
Opinion polls had suggested that the vote, held under Switzerland's direct democracy system, would be tight.
Tensions have been running particularly high over the "No to a Switzerland with 10 million!" initiative, put forward by the hard-right Swiss People's Party (SVP).
That proposal wanted measures to stop the wealthy Alpine nation's population -- currently 9.1 million -- going above 10 million before 2050.
In a country where foreigners make up more than a quarter of the population, the proposal, if accepted, wo…

The divisive proposal, which is supported by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), has been pitched as a “sustainability initiative” aimed at limiting population growth and stemming immigration.
However, for companies based in the country, the proposed cap at 10 million people could significantly limit access to international talent and damage economic growth in a country that has the fourth-highest GDP per capita in the world.
Switzerland’s democratic system allows citizens to propose changes to the constitution through a popular initiative. If these initiatives receive 100,000 signatures from the Swiss electorate within 18 months, the proposal will be put to a referendum.
While most constitutional changes proposed through this form of direct democracy have been unsuccessful, the referendum on limiting the Swiss population is expected to be close.

Swiss voters are taking up an unprecedented proposal to limit Switzerland’s population at 10 million in coming decades
GENEVA --Swiss voters will take up anunprecedented proposalto limit Switzerland’s population, part of a longtime push by right-wing leaders to cap the number of foreigners who migrate to the rich and economically vibrant Alpine country.
A national vote on whether to cap Switzerland's population at 10 million in coming decades culminates with in-person balloting on Sunday. Swiss democracy gives voters a direct say in policymaking through referendums typically held four times a year.
The proposal is backed by the populist Swiss People’s Party, which has the most seats in parliament and has for years thrived off and fomented an isolationist streak in Switzerland.
Recent polling from the gfs.bern agency suggested that it could be a close contest.
Supporters of the initiative dislike an influx of expatriates from the neighboringEuropean Union, and say Swiss infrastructure, housing, social programs, natural resources and way of life have been strained under demographic growth.
