Miles Russell and Jackson Koivun Prove the 'Future of Golf' Is Strong ... SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – In golf, as in life, you never know what the future holds. Saturday at the U.S. Open, Jackson Koivun, 21, and Miles Russell, 17, were billed as the next big things, called “the future of golf” on the television broadcast, despite the commentators knowing golf is as fickle a sport as they come. For every Tiger Woods there are a thousand Ty Tryons, prodigies billed as the next big thing, only to fail as pros after outstanding amateur careers. We don’t know where Koivun and Russell will ultimately fall on that spectrum, but for one sunny day at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, they proved their talent and perspective put them in a good position to succeed. Paired together in the third round, Koivun and Russell shot matching 4-over 74s in tough conditions, leaving them near the bottom of the leaderboard and likely out of the race for the top amateur medal. They hit some great shots, made some nice birdies and never let the wheels completely fall off, most impressively after Koivun topped a shot out of a fairway bunker and into the only bit of water on this property on the sixth hole. Yet, it was h…

Miles Russell, Jackson Koivun play together in U.S. Open's 'future of ... SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Miles Russell had a long walk to his ball at the end of a long U.S. Open round with Jackson Koivun on Saturday after smashing his tee shot 407 yards on the 18th hole. “Not bad, not bad,” Russell said afterward with a smile. “I hit that one pretty good.” Imagine what he might be able to do when he’s all grown up. The 17-year-old Russell and 21-year-old Koivun were paired together in the third round, a grouping that was referred to during TV coverage as the future of golf. Already so accomplished before they are even professionals — Russell hasn’t even started college yet — both players understand why such expectations have been placed on them. “I mean, I’m trying not to think about that,” Koivun said. “Just taking it one day at a time and let my golf game do the talking, but those are great compliments.” Both players shot 4-over-par 74, dropping to 7-over for the tournament. Those scores weren’t too bad on a difficult day at windy Shinnecock Hills for any golfer, let alone two that were playing on the weekend for the first time in a major championship. It’s expected to be the first …

"Not bad, not bad," Russell said afterward with a smile. "I hit that one pretty good." Imagine what he might be able to do when he's all grown up. Russell, just 17 years old, and Koivun, 21, were paired together in the third round, a grouping that was being referred to during TV coverage as the future of golf. "I mean, I'm trying not to think about that," Koivun said. "Just taking it one day at a time and let my golf game do the talking, but those are great compliments." Each player shot 4-over 74, dropping to 7 over for the tournament and tied for 47th place among the 72 players who made the cut Friday. Credit: Kathleen Malone-Van Dyke By Ben Dickson benjamin.dickson@newsday.com @bendickson__ Updated June 20, 2026 9:33 pm Share This duo wasn’t quite Arnie and Jack, Tiger and Phil or Scottie and Rory. Not close. But plenty of fans at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club envisioned that maybe one day — just maybe — they could be. Jackson Koivun, 21, the No. 1 amateur golfer in the world, and Miles Russell, 17, the No. 1 junior golfer in the world, played alongside each other Saturday in the third round of the U.S. Open. Their scores — they each shot a 4-over-par 74 on Saturday to move to 7 over for the tournament — were hardly relevant to the big picture considering many believed they were witnessing their first look at golf’s future in an elite championship-level test. Come 2036, when the U.S. Open returns to Shinnecock Hills, this experience may be a footnote in a much greater story for the young pairing. For now, both seemed to enjoy playing with each other. “It was cool,” Russell said. “Someb…
