The contraband was concealed inside envelopes bearing Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) markings and sealed with official MEA tape. The bag also contained copies of various United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reports and fake top Secret Mission Reports, kept inside the trolley bag carried by the passenger, officials said on Sunday. Official sources said nearly 5 tonnes of PDS rice was seized during multiple raids carried out across the district. Gang caught with MDMA worth more than Rs 15 lakh THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A major drug trafficking gang has been arrested by the Thiruvananthapuram Rural Dansaf team on Friday. The four-member group was caught with 308 grams of MDMA, worth over `15 lakh in the market. The drugs were seized after two rounds of checking. Initially, 175 grams of MDMA was found hidden on one of the accused, a woman, during a body search. On further inspection, 133 grams more was found. The group had been under secret surveillance for some time. Those arrested are Shami, 32, from Chadayamangalam in Kollam, Muhammed Kalfan 24, Ashiq, 20, and Al Ameen, 23, all from Kaniyapuram. They were nabbed at Chenkavila near Pozhiyoor by the Dansaf team with the help of Pozhiyoor police. The car they were travelling in was also seized. The gang had brought the MDMA from Bengaluru. The accused was identified as Prabith Bhathra, 31, a native of Gunthawada village in Malkangiri district of Odisha. Police registered a case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Acting on credible information, the EAGLE Force and Sathupalli police intercepted a car on the outskirts of Sathupalli and seized 166.3 kg of ganja worth about ₹83.13 lakh from the vehicle. Rs 2.5-crore worth painkillers, 2.5 tonnes of beedi leaves seized THOOTHUKUDI:In a predawn search at the Vellapatti Beach on Monday, Coastal Security Group (CSG) personnel seized Rs 2.5-crore-worth painkiller tablets and Rs 50-lakh-worth beedi leaves, allegedly intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka via sea. Sources said when a police team, led by Inspector M Petchimuthu, during a vehicle inspection in the wee hours of Monday along the Vellapatti-Tharuvaikulam Road, asked a truck to pull over, the driver and the occupants allegedly fled. A subsequent inspection revealed that the truck was loaded with nine bundles of painkiller tablets and 72 bundles, each containing 35 kg of beedi leaves. The police seized the contraband and the truck, and have initiated a search for the suspects. The consignment has been handed over to Customs officials, who registered an FIR against the truck owner, driver, and a few other suspects.So far this year, the CSG has foiled nine attempts to smuggle beedi leaves, turmeric, cigarettes, drugs, and other contrabands to Sri Lanka. Illegal liquor racket busted in Hyderabad; 85 bottles seized Hyderabad: The Secunderabad District Task Force (DTF) busted an illegal liquor distribution racket and seized 85 non-duty-paid alcohol bottles of premium brands worth Rs 3 lakh near Bagara Bar and Restaurant. One person has been arrested. The accused, 35-year-old Nipan Dhara, allegedly supplied non-duty-paid liquor across Hyderabad. Customers placed orders over the phone. Dhara’s job was to deliver the liquor directly to their doorstep. Officials said that alcohol was sourced from Haryana, Delhi, West Bengal , Karnataka, Goa and Andhra Pradesh , as well as bottles meant for the Defence quota. A labourer who partook in the importation 700kg of meth was offered a paltry $400 to unload the drugs while a man with allegedly greater involvement fled overseas after being released by police. Border force officials found the drugs hidden within industrial machinery shipped from the USA in July 2024 and followed the package to a warehouse in Warwick Farm in Sydney's west. There they found Nana Owusu-Ageyman and Michael Charumbira, 32, attempting to offload the container from a truck. Both men were arrested but Australian Federal Police released Mr Owusu-Ageyman. Charumbira was charged and has pleaded guilty to attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. When he appeared before Sydney's Downing Centre District Court for sentencing, it was revealed his alleged accomplice had fled the country despite being known to police. "I thought that was a bit curious," Judge Christopher O'Brien remarked during a hearing on June 9. When asked why Mr Owusu-Ageyman was let go, an AFP spokesperson gave a short statement. A few weeks ago, the Madhya Pradesh police’s special task force (MPSTF) seized a truck housing multiple compartments/chambers, where 600 kg of ganja was concealed for supply to several states. The seizure, made in Madhya Pradesh’s Anuppur district along the Chhattisgarh–MP border, was valued at Rs 1.80 crore under NDPS Act norms. The consignment was meant to be smuggled to multiple states after being stashed for a few days in the jungles of eastern MP’s Maihar district.
