TheTamil Nadugovernment is unlikely to proceed with the proposed greenfield airport plan at Parandur as it involves destruction of wetlands, and will instead explore an alternative site for the project, State Minister for Energy, Resources and Law Nirmal Kumar, said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat after the Governor’s address, the Minister reiterated the government’s opposition to the Parandur airport project in its current form.
“Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s first ground protest was against the greenfield airport at Parandur. We remain firm on our stand. We are not against development, but we will not destroy wetlands,” he said.
The statement marks a significant shift from the previous government’s approach to the project.
With the State government now indicating that it will look for an alternative location, the timeline and contours of Tamil Nadu’s long-term aviation infrastructure expansion are likely to be reassessed.

AAI Allocates Rs 186 Million for Trichy Airport Expansion
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sanctioned Rs 186 million to construct a compound wall for securing the 96% of land acquired by the Tamil Nadu government for the expansion of Trichy International Airport. The total land requirement for the project is 512.5 acres, with 222.5 acres still to be acquired. The expansion includes extending the runway from its current 8,136 feet to 13,057 feet, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and improve operational efficiency. A parallel taxiway is also planned to enhance aircraft movement and reduce turnaround times. Additionally, a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and technical block, being built at a cost of Rs 607 million, are expected to be completed by May 2025. The eight-floor ATC block, located near the integrated passenger terminal, will enhance air traffic management services to meet the growing passenger demand. Trichy Airport has reported a 15% year-on-year increase in flight movements and a 13% rise in passenger traffic. Industry experts urge Chennai second airport as key to TN growth
Industry and infrastructure experts have reiterated that a second airport for Chennai is no longer optional, calling it a critical investment for Tamil Nadu’s long-term economic growth rather than just another infrastructure project.
With the existing Chennai airport at Meenambakkam facing constraints that limit expansion, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to develop a new airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district. The proposed project spans about 5,600 acres, including plans to acquire around 3,700 acres of agricultural land; about 1,700 acres have reportedly been acquired so far.
However, uncertainty has emerged over whether the project will continue, be dropped, or be shifted, amid political questions following actor Vijay’s party coming to power after having earlier backed farmers opposing land acquisition.
At a seminar organised by the “Super Chennai” forum, speakers argued that planning should begin well before airports hit saturation. Retired IAS officer Paneendra Reddy said expansion should start when capacity reaches 75%, and a new project should be underway by 90%, adding that the second airport must…

The upcoming inauguration of the renovated terminal of Thoothukudi airport is on July 26, and with it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebration. This is a very loud welcome for all industrial leaders as this would be a major leap for cargo movement, business travel, and industrial connectivity for this region.
This airport, with its added infrastructure of a terminal building, runway extension, and night landing facilities, is strategically placed between the two districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli and would thus form an important infrastructure link to the growing industrial ecosystem in southern Tamil Nadu.
“Thoothukudi is fast becoming one of the most promising investment zones in the region,” were the words of D. R. INS Baaz Won't Expand Its Wings, India Decides To Pivot Towards ...
New Delhi:Indiahas moved away from INS Baaz, the existing naval air station at Campbell Bay, and shifted to Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar Island, where it will build a greenfield airport, a choice the government says was driven by hard technical and strategic constraints rather than preference.
The Cabinet approved the Galathea Bay site last November, placing the facility underIndian Navyoperational control.
The airport is the most visible of four interlinked projects that together constitute New Delhi's most ambitious transformation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands since Indian independence. The others are an international container transshipment port (ICTP), a township and a power plant. The entire package, formally called the Great Nicobar Island (GNI) development plan, is designed to convert a remote and chronically under-resourced island at the southern tip of the archipelago into a dual-use strategic and commercial node.
A top source in thedefenceministry said INS Baaz was evaluated alongside four other sites before being set aside. The base is hemmed in by a hill feature on its northern side that rises…

Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu), Jul 26 (PTI) Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Saturday said the Centre was planning to convert the old terminal here into a dedicated cargo terminal to unlock new possibilities for farmers, fishermen, traders and small industries in the district.
At present, seafood is transported to Kochi and Bengaluru, and with this dedicated cargo terminal, Thoothukudi could become a seafood export hub, he said.
“You have Thovalai flower market 70 km away in Kanyakumari district. They use the Thiruvananthapuram airport now. In future, you can send flowers with their fresh scent across the world,” Rammohan said while speaking at the inauguration of the new terminal building of the Thoothukudi airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tamil Nadu slows land push for Hosur airport but keeps project alive
Tamil Nadu’s ambitious plan tobuild a greenfield airport in Hosur— pitched as a future logistics and industrial gateway for the state — has entered a cautious phase. With Assembly elections approaching and scattered protests surfacing in villages marked for acquisition, the DMK government seems to have decided to slow the pace of land procurement even as it continues to pursue clearances from New Delhi and advance paperwork behind the scenes.
The recalibration, officials say, is tactical rather than retreat. About 3,000 acres are required for the project, including 800 acres of government land, to develop an airport capable of handling 30 million passengers a year. Of this, roughly 2,134 acres are private holdings, much of it agricultural, spread across 12 villages in Hosur and Shoolagiri taluks.
Hosur is not a sleepy border town anymore. Over the past three decades, it has grown into one ofTamil Nadu’s most concentrated manufacturing belts — home to automotive, electronics, aerospace and electric vehicle plants, and thousands of small and medium enterprises. More than 500 large industries and nearly 3,000 MSME…

Chennai:The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the Parandur airport project is implemented with utmost care, taking into account the livelihood and interests of the people in the area. The government’s assurance comes amidst concerns raised by actor-politician Vijay, various stakeholders, including local residents and environmental groups.
The Tamil Nadu government justified selecting Parandur over Pannur for Chennai’s proposed second airport, citing fewer aviation-related challenges due to the lower number of residents. While 1,546 families live in Pannur, only 1,005 families reside in Parandur, minimizing potential impacts. The site also offers sufficient vacant land for airport functions, while Pannur’s proximity to existing habitations and industrial units makes land acquisition difficult. The government has emphasized that the project will be implemented in a manner that minimizes disruption to the lives of people in the area.

The initiative to develop Coimbatore Airport began with the DMK government’s announcement of a land acquisition plan covering 635.33 acres back in 2010. Subsequently, under the renewed tenure of the DMK government, efforts to acquire land accelerated, with a substantial fund allocation of ₹2,600 crore earmarked for this purpose. Presently, only a mere 14 acres of land remain uncultivated.
However, the Tamil Nadu government has set forth specific conditions for transferring the acquired lands to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the expansion project. Notably, the terms stipulated by the government differ if the land is transferred to a private entity instead.
Despite the majority of the land being acquired, AAI is yet to make a final decision regarding acceptance of the conditions laid out by the Tamil Nadu government. Consequently, this indecision has resulted in delays in executing the expansion project.
According to officials, the conditions imposed by the Tamil Nadu governm…

UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), meaning 'Every common citizen of India will fly,' is the Narendra Modi government's ambitious plan to take India's air connectivity to the next level amid booming air travel among the huge Indian population. For this, the central government has a mega plan to build new airports, modern runways, aerodromes, and hundreds of new helipads across the country.
The scheme was originally launched in 2016. It successfully operationalised 669 routes by connecting 95 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes. An official statement said it has been benefiting more than 1.66 crore passengers.
Building on this success, the government approved a Modified UDAN Scheme in March this year. For the updated version, the government has allocated an outlay of ₹29,000 crore over the next 10 years to accelerate the ongoing aviation expansion and further fuel the goal of a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.
To mark the launch of Phase 2 of the scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Jodhpur Airport on Saturday.

The Kerala government has allocated substantial funds to support these airstrip projects. In the 2025-26 state …
