Lamentations for a Fallen Leader: Thousands Gather to Mourn Ayatollah ... Dispatches from the Lebanese Stronghold Lamentations for a Fallen Leader: Thousands Gather to Mourn Ayatollah Khamenei By Fátima Fouad el-Samman Photographs by Fatima Joumaa Published on 01 March 2026 Thousands of Hezbollah supporters wept and swayed to Hussaini lamentations at a gathering in Dahieh’s Ashoura Square on Sunday, March 1, mourning Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei. Their cries grew louder each time someone invoked the name of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, whose image rose above the mourners’ heads as chants echoed through the square. For many supporters of the resistance group, the wound of their leader’s martyrdom has yet to heal. Fasting crowds of mourning men, women, children, and the elderly — all clad in black — marched toward the square from the early morning hours. They carried pictures of Khamenei pressed to their hearts. Joined in chest-beating rituals, waving the flags of Hezbollah and Iran, they chanted: “We will never accept humiliation.” By 4 p.m., Jamous Street was almost completely blocked. The sound of weeping moved through the gathering to the backdro…

Hezbollah leaders' historic funeral showed resistance strength: Islamic ... # The Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement says the Hezbollah leaders’ massive funeral demonstrates the resistance’s strength and deepens the Israeli enemy’s existential crisis. The resistance is not just a choice but a deeply rooted path in the consciousness of the nation’s people, Islamic Jihad said in a statement on Sunday, paying tribute to martyred Hezbollah leaders Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Sayyed Hashem Safieddine The Israeli regime's attempts to intimidate mourners through “empty displays” and repression failed, reflecting its desperation and moral bankruptcy, it said. "The blood of the martyred leaders fuels the resistance’s determination, strengthening its will to achieve victory and liberation," the Islamic Jihad said. "Martyr Nasrallah and fellow leaders consistently upheld the centrality of Al-Quds Jerusalem and rejected concessions on Palestinian rights," it added. The resistance movement emphasized that the Lebanese people’s mass turnout reaffirmed unity with the resistance and commitment to continue the struggle until Palestine is fully liberated. Nasrallah's funeral: A million voices for Resistance FEB 24, 2025 A million-strong funeral in Beirut for Hezbollah’s martyred leader Hassan Nasrallah became a global declaration of defiance. It showed the backbone of resistance is not just intact – it is unbreakable. Khalil Harb The sight of Lebanese resistance flags fluttering near the border with the occupation state has long unsettled Israelis. But themassive funeralthat unfolded in Beirut on Sunday afternoon for the martyred former Hezbollah secretary-general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah would have commanded their undivided attention – and they were not the only ones watching. Lebanese citizens, whether supporters or critics of the resistance movement, along with its allies across the Arab and Islamic worlds, the Global South, and even in western countries where some governments oppose it, witnessed an extraordinary moment. Sunday’s rare mass gathering sent an unmistakable message: the spirit of those who resist oppression will never be broken. As theNew York Timesobserved, the event was “a show of strength.” The funeral reportedly drew an estimated 1.4 million attendees – nearly 25 percent of Lebanon’s population – positioni…

Grief and Resilience: Lebanon Village Marks Eid Among War Dead ... In the war-devastated southern Lebanese village of Aitaroun on Monday, residents marked the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Fitr among their dead. Relatives crowded the village's cemeteries to pray for the more than 100 residents, including fighters from Hezbollah, killed during the war between the militant group and Israel that ended with a fragile ceasefire in November. "We defied the entire world by being here in Aitaroun to celebrate Eid with our martyrs," Siham Ftouni said near the grave of her son, a rescuer with an Islamic health organisation affiliated with Hezbollah. "Their blood permitted us to come back to our village," she said. During the war, Lebanese state media reported that Israeli troops used explosives in Aitaroun and two nearby villages to blow up houses. The town square is heavily damaged. Few people have returned to live or to reopen businesses. The story is the same in other villages in southern Lebanon. In Aitaroun, more than 90 of the village's dead — including some who died from natural causes — were buried only a month ago when Israeli troops pulled out. Under the ceasefire, Israel had 6…

Not here, in this dusty field strewn with dead people wrapped in blankets and zipped up in body bags. And not now, as Israeli airstrikes crashed around him for the third week, erasing more of his neighborhood and sundering hundreds of families and friendships. Yet in Gaza’s central town of Zawaideh, the 22-year-old Palestinian photojournalist buried 32 members of his family who were killed in Israeli air raids on October 15. Dirawi’s aunts, uncles, and cousins from Gaza City had heeded Israeli military evacuation orders and taken refuge in his home farther south. Nasrallah's Funeral: A million voices for Resistance
Nasrallah's Funeral: A million voices for Resistance By Khalil Harb – Feb 24, 2025 A million-strong funeral in Beirut for Hezbollah’s martyred leader Hassan Nasrallah became a global declaration of defiance. It showed the backbone of resistance is not just intact – it is unbreakable. The sight of Lebanese resistance flags fluttering near the border with the occupation state has long unsettled ‘Israelis’. But the massive funeral that unfolded in Beirut on Sunday afternoon for the martyred former Hezbollah secretary-general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah would have commanded their undivided attention – and they were not the only ones watching. As the New York Times observed, the event was “a show of strength.” The funeral reportedly drew an estimated 1.4 million attendees – nearly 25 percent of Lebanon’s population – posi…

By KAREEM CHEHAYEB TYRE, Lebanon (AP) — Wearing a yellow scarf showing her son killed fighting for Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, Iman Dilbani wept during a religious sermon Friday in the battered southern city of Tyre during the Islamic holy month of Muharram. Tyre, Lebanon’s fourth largest city, has been devastated by the Israel-Hezbollah war that reached a reported ceasefire Friday , with damaged buildings and structures reduced to rubble seen on almost every street following intense Israeli airstrikes. Muharram is among the holiest months for Shiite Muslims and marks the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, and his 72 companions in the battle of Karbala in the seventh century in present-day Iraq.
