ISLAMABAD: The US-Iran crisis is expected to feature prominently in talks between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing today, Monday, officials said, as Pakistan and China deepen diplomatic coordination over a conflict that has disrupted global energy markets and raised fears of wider regional instability.
Sharif is scheduled to meet Xi, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other senior Chinese leaders during the Beijing leg of his four-day visit to China, which comes amid intensifying diplomatic activity surrounding the fragile US-Iran peace process.
Pakistan has increasingly coordinated its diplomatic efforts with China, which has emerged as a key backer of Islamabad’s mediation initiative. Beijing and Islamabad have jointly promoted a five-point peace proposal calling for a ceasefire, dialogue, protection of civilian and nuclear facilities, safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and adherence to the United Nations Charter.

President Xi Jinping Meets with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
On the morning of September 2, 2025, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025 and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
President Xi noted that China and Pakistan share a resilient bond, a brotherly bond, and also a bond built on trust and common values—an ironclad friendship that was forged through historical twists and turns and has grown ever stronger over time. As the once-in-a-century transformations are unfolding faster across the world, a robust China-Pakistan relationship is vital for regional peace and development. The two sides should accelerate the building of an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era, so as to deliver greater benefits to the two peoples and set an example for building a community with a shared future among neighboring countries.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Beijing on May 23 as his country seeks to reinvigorate its efforts to mediate in the ongoing standoff between the United States and Iran.
On his three-day visit at the invitation of China, a key diplomatic and trade partner with Iran, Sharif is also seeking to deepen bilateral defense cooperation and secure fresh Chinese investment for Pakistan.
“It's unclear what specific asks Pakistan would have of China in this visit, but the country is broadly seeking to inject urgency into the US-Iran negotiation process, which has stalled in recent weeks,” Elizabeth Threlkeld, a senior fellow and director of the South Asia program at the Washington-based Stimson Center, told RFE/RL.
Threlkeld added that, given China's close relationship with Iran, Pakistan has been careful to consult leaders in Beijing regularly.
Pakistan and China will review bilateral ties "and cooperation in political, economic and strategic domains,” Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Tahir Andrabi said on May 22.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz will also hold formal talks with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, covering political, economic, and security cooperation.
