Just 1 in 10 Europeans now view the U.S. as an ally ... - CBS News
Just 1 in 10 Europeans now view the U.S. as an ally ... - CBS News Just one in every 10 Europeans now sees the U.S. as an ally, according to a major new poll conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations across 15 European countries. In what the think tank described as a "collapse in European faith in the U.S.," only 11% of the nearly 20,000 European respondents now consider America an ally, down from 16% six months ago and 22% in November 2024. Half of those polled view the U.S. as a "necessary partner," while 25% see America as a rival or an adversary. The percentage of respondents who view the U.S. as a rival or an adversary grew in several countries, especially Denmark, France, Spain and Switzerland. The authors of a policy brief sharing the results of the poll cited recent actions by President Trump as likely influencing respondents, including his threats to leave NATO and annex Greenland , striking Iran without including European nations in the planning , and planning the withdrawal of some U.S. troops in Europe. Majorities in every country polled said they were not confident the U.S. would come to their nation's aid if they came under attack. And most said their go…

Francesco Duina and Michael Rocque present new survey evidence showing Europeans are still broadly positive about Americans, even if they dislike Trump. But there are signs this may not last. Virtually every poll on the topic suggests that Europeans do not like Donald Trump or the US government very much. See, for instance, the YouGov poll from earlier this year which found that 81% of British people have an u…

Fewer Europeans see United States as an ally - Defence24.com
Fewer Europeans see United States as an ally - Defence24.com The study was conducted in May 2026 among adults living in 15 European countries : Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Support for the United States is falling; the vast majority does not consider it a reliable ally. Instead, Europeans are prioritising regional autonomy as well as local defence spending and investment. One in four respondents in the survey considers the United States a rival or an adversary. The only groups that still perceive the US as an ally were those identifying as voters of the right-wing parties Law and Justice (PiS) in Poland and Reform UK in the United Kingdom. In Poland, these voters account for 24 percent of respondents . However, this result is not significantly lower than that from the final months of Joe Biden’s presidency. Toward the end of the former president’s term, 31 percent of Poles considered the United States an ally. Almost every respondent stated that their country should reduce its dependence on American weaponry . The most numerous supporters of investment in…
