Wes Streeting has dropped the “bombshell” that he’d like Britain to “one day” rejoin the European Union, said
The Times
.
The former health secretary and
Labour leadership hopeful
has “put the Europe question firmly back on the political agenda”. However, the process of reversing Brexit and rejoining the EU would be far from straightforward.
Is it possible?
Yes. Although no country has ever
left the EU
and then rejoined, it is possible. If the UK decided to seek membership again, it would need to apply through the framework set out in Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union.

Is the UK about to rejoin the EU? - EU Reporter
No one should be surprised by the growing number of voices calling for Britain to return to the EU, or at least to accelerate and deepen the “reset” currently underway. There are four sets of reasons for this,
writes Richard Corbett, former UK MEP:
Economic
: Brexit has turned out to be even more costly than anticipated. Two years ago, the OBR (the UK’s official economic forecast office) reckoned that Britain’s economy was some 4% smaller than it would have been had it remained in the EU. Now, the latest calculations by several academic and independent institutes estimate the figure to be even higher. Chancellor Rachel Reeves spoke of 8% in her Mais Lecture last month.
Such an economic loss has consequences. It would have produced an extra £80 or £90 billion every year in tax revenue. Britain’s fraught debates on the government can afford to spend would be very different!
The government is seeking to attenuate the economic damage of Brexit by aligning with EU single market standards and rules in various sectors, to cut red tape, paperwork and border inspections. It is starting with agriculture and energy, hoping to move on to other s…
EU could fast-track Britain's membership if UK decided to reverse Brexit
EU could fast-track Britain's membership if UK decided to reverse Brexit
The
European Union
could fast-track Britain’s return to the bloc if it decided to rejoin, dispelling suggestions the UK would be pushed to the back of the queue if it tried to
reverse Brexit.
The debate over Britain’s
EU membership has been reignited
after former health secretary
Wes Streeting said
the country should rejoin as part of his pitch to lead the
Labour Party
.
Sandro Gozi, the chair of the European delegation to the
EU
-UK Parliamentary Assembly, told
The Independent
that the
European Union
would see a request to rejoin from the UK as a “major victory for the European project”, insisting that there would be a way to fast-track it.
Brussels sources confirmed the UK’s potential re-accession could take place much more quickly than it would for other candidate countries, due to its significant pre-existing alignment with the bloc.
While it is thought that the EU would include joining the Euro as a key starting point of talks with the UK, multiple sources said this was unlikely to be a red line given the entry requirements for the Euro are so strict, and the UK currently doesn’t meet them.

Is the United Kingdom Rejoining the E.U.? What You Need to Know - TIME
The debate over Brexit and whether the United Kingdom could rejoin the European Union has returned to the forefront of
British politics at a time of great instability
.
Former Health Secretary
Wes Streeting
, who resigned last week citing a lack of confidence in embattled
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership
, has said the U.K. should seek to rejoin the bloc.
“Leaving the European Union was a catastrophic mistake,” he insisted over the weekend. “It's left us less wealthy, less powerful, and less in control than at any point before the industrial revolution.”
Condemning the Brexit referendum of 2016, he continued: “We can no longer afford to be silent about it. We must remake the argument… We need a new special relationship with the E.U., because Britain’s future lies with Europe and one day back in the European Union.”
Streeting urged Britain to band together amid growing geopolitical instability, pointing to “
Russian aggression”
and what he described as "the retreat of
America first.

Could the UK rejoin the EU — and how would it work?
As
Sir Keir Starmer
fights for survival, and possible
Labour leadership candidates
attempt to set out their policy positions, it seems that a
debate over the European Union
is back on the table.
In his first pitch to voters as a backbench MP, Wes Streeting – who has confirmed plans to stand in any leadership race – said
Britain must pursue a “new special relationship” with the European Union
and signalled he wanted to see the country rejoin the trade bloc in the future.
Meanwhile, Andy Burnham has said he sees a “long-term case” for rejoining the bloc – but insisted he wouldn’t be reopening the debate immediately.
But how exactly would Britain rejoin the EU? Here,
The Independent
takes a look at the process for doing so, and how easy (or difficult) it would be to get the public on side.
