World Cup sticker shock: The ugly cost of the beautiful game's grand event
Saving up for aWorld Cupis nothing new for die-hard soccer fan Paul Marshall.
In 2014 and 2018, the Southern California native made trips to Brazil and Russia for the festivities. In 2022, he spent the entirety of the competition in Qatar, from the opener to the final.
Then, in 2026, the grand celebration came to his own backyard.
"It was a shock when the prices came out," said Marshall about the World Cup with 104 matches split between the U.S., Mexico and Canada. "It's like three to four times [more], then when you look at matches like the final, it's even more, it's like eight times more.
"It was a shocker."
On FIFA's resale marketplace, in which soccer's organizing body takes an additional cut from transaction fees, prices have soared into four to six figures for consumers. There have even beentickets listed for more than $2 million. By pricing out ordinary fans, FIFA risks hurting the image of the tournament.
Lawmakers across the U.S. have questioned FIFA's perplexing multi-category ticket-selling process, leading toa subpoena from the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey, who stated in a…

Six days after FIFA president Gianni Infantinoclaimedthat “every” 2026 World Cup match is “already sold out,” FIFA, out of nowhere, launched an effort to sell World Cup tickets.
Itemailed fansadvertising an “exclusive additional chance to purchase,” and warned that “availability is extremely limited.” Then, from Wednesday onward, it offered tickets to at least 64 of the World Cup’s 104 games, according to fans who sent information and screenshots toThe Athletic.

The unexpected sale was, some experts suspect, the clearest evidence yet that FIFA has perhaps overstated demand forsomeWorld Cup games — or, rather, that it has priced out segments of that demand.
“When they say there’s incredibly high demand for this [World Cup], of course that’s true,” Jim McCarthy, a ticketing industry veteran, toldThe Athletic. “But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a whole bunch of games that are going to need some [marketing] support, and probably are still overpriced.”

That’s the justification FIFA has used to sharply increase ticket prices for the World Cup taking place in the United States, Mexico and Canada this summer compared to previous tournaments.
But those increases could come with some serious consequences: The New York and New Jersey attorneys general said on Wednesday they have
launched a probe

And it’s not just the ticket prices. New York Atty Gen. Letitia James and New Jersey Atty Gen. Jennifer Davenport are also looking at FIFA’s sales process, including the way it has allocated tickets to fans and whether the organization’s sales tactics have contributed to …

Cannibal capitalism eats the World Cup - Red Flag
Cannibal capitalism eats the World Cup - Red Flag
FIFA has managed to turn the beautiful game into an ugly spectacle. With the US playing host to the World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, Trump has discovered the power of sports to wash away the blood and dirt of empire. This month, billions of people will watch men kick a ball around a field as 48 national teams play a record 104 matches in the FIFA World Cup. I’ll be one of them, but what price are we paying to enjoy these international football festivities?
The cost of entry to the games is higher than ever. For this year’s tournament, FIFA came up with the genius idea of running their own scalping system alongside a “dynamic pricing” process. This is the let-the-market-rip version of access to sports, where the richest win every time. At the 2022 World Cup, the cheapest category tickets cost around $69, with Qatari resident tickets available for as little as $11. In the current competition, you can expect to pay at least $1,000 for the nosebleeds in the group games and seats at the final on sale for as much as $2 million per ticket. Even billionaire Trump said he wouldn’t
pay
for his own ticket at those prices. Fan groups are…

Fans accuse FIFA of 'betrayal' over World Cup ticket prices
Fans have accused FIFA of a "monumental betrayal" after the latest ticket prices for theWorld Cupbegan circulating Thursday.
The governing body allocates 8% of tickets to national associations for games involving their team to sell to the most loyal fans.
And a list published by the German soccer federation revealed prices ranged from $180 to $700 for varying group stage games. The lowest price for the final was $4,185, and the highest was $8,680.

Those group stage prices are very different from FIFA's claims of $60 tickets being available. The target from United States soccer officials when bidding for the tournament seven years ago was to offer hundreds of thousands of $21 seats across the opening phase of games.
Fan organization Football Supporters Europe (FSE) described the current prices as "extortionate."
It said, based on the information it had available, fans faced paying €6,900 ($8,111) to attend every match…

FIFA Gets 5M World Cup Ticket Requests As Fans Protest Prices
Even amid a five-fold increase in ticket prices from the 2022 World Cup, next year’s tournament in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is still garnering strong demand.
Soccer fans are flocking to buy tickets for the FIFA 2026 men’s World Cup, despite eye-popping prices and rising complaints from around the world over those costs.
FIFA said that it received 5 million ticket requests during its third phase of ticket sales for the upcoming tournament, with the latest deluge happening just in the first 24 hours after this part of the sales process began Thursday. That figure adds to the nearly 2 million tickets sold during the two prior phases, and further showcases the demand for the global event, to be held next June and July in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
That demand, however, arrives as ticket prices have increased about fivefold compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to data from Football Supporters Europe. Prices for the final match, to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, begin at $4,000, and FSE said it would cost at least $6,900 for a fan to follow their team from the start of group-stage play to th…

Why World Cup 2026 Tickets Are So Expensive — and Why Some Matches ...
By Molly Mitchell
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally here, but as the tournament kicks off, some matches are stillstruggling to sell out.
The surprising prospect of empty seats, while not an entirely new problem for the World Cup, has fueled debate over FIFA’s ticketing strategy, particularly after fans criticized soaring prices and the tournament’s new dynamic pricing model.
While high ticket costs have drawn the most attention, experts say the story is more complicated. Changes in technology, resale platforms and demand forecasting have transformed how major sporting events sell tickets, creating new opportunities for organizers while raising more concerns about fan access.
Darden professor Pnina Feldman’s research focuses on how digital technologies affects operations strategy with emphasis on services, platforms, pricing, and consumer engagement.
