Sweden is lucky to be at the
World Cup
, saved from a disaster of a qualifying campaign by a healthy ranking in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League. But being on the guest list in some form is all that matters, and now things kick off against a stubborn and defensively resilient Tunisia team in Mexico.
Only a handful of places separate these nations in the FIFA World Rankings—Sweden, 39th; Tunisia 45th—but it is the European side that is marginally favored. The firepower of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres should be no match for anyone, but only if properly served.
Sweden will have to get off to a good start, because tougher opponents lie ahead.
Tunisia, meanwhile, is the outsider in the group but the expanded format offers its best ever chance of escaping the first round and making the knockouts.

Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5-1 to move top of Group F in their World Cup opener in Monterrey, Mexico.
Sweden took a first-half lead through Yasin Ayari’s first superb strike and Viktor Gyokeres assisted Alexander Isak for a second, before Omar Rekik headed one back.
Isak then set up Gyokeres, Mattias Svanberg slid home seconds after coming on and Ayari, of Tunisian descent, flashed in a late screamer in the second half.
The result leaves Graham Potter’s side in an excellent position to progress after the Netherlands drew 2-2 with Japan earlier.

He celebrated his second goal after firing home another stunning strike in stoppage time
Yasin Ayari was the star of the show as Sweden hammered Tunisia 5-1 in their FIFA World Cup opener.
The Brighton midfielder produced a man of the match display(Isak won the award officially), scoring twice and running the game from midfield. His first goal was an absolute thunderbolt and could already be a contender for goal of the tournament. Yet what caught many viewers by surprise was what happened next. Ayari chose not to celebrate.
The reason lies in his deep connection to Tunisia.
Ayari's father, Azzouz, is Tunisian, meaning the midfielder was playing against the country of his family's roots. Out of respect for Tunisia and his heritage, he kept his emotions in check after opening the scoring with a spectacular strike.
His first goal was not the only highlight of the evening. Deep into injury time, Ayari produced another stunning effort to complete his brace and put the finishing touch on Sweden's dominant performance. This time there was no holding back. The Brighton midfielder celebrated with his teammates after f…

Sweden will take on Tunisia at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico in what will be a crucial clash in one of the tournament's most competitive groups, with the Netherlands and Japan the firm favorites to qualify.
This

match is most likely going to come down to whether Graham Potter's frontline led by Liverpool's Alexander Isak and Arsenal's Viktor Gyökeres, can break down Sabri Lamouchi's stubborn Tunisian defense.
Tunisia cruised through CAF qualifying, winning all six of their matches without conceding a single goal. Sweden, meanwhile, had to take the long route to North America. Despite …

Swedenopened their 2026FIFA World Cupcampaign with a stunning 5-1 win overTunisiaas two superb Yasin Ayari long-rangers sandwiched goals from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Mattias Svanberg.
The two strikers helped set each other up for clinical finishes, while Svanberg came on and scored within 16 seconds of his entry to make an instant impact. Ayari's brace was the best of the lot: the first saw him pick his spot with the keeper stranded and three defenders on the line, while his second (and Sweden's fifth) saw him blast home from the edge of the box.
Graham Potter's men now lead Group F after Netherlands and Japan drew 2-2 earlier in the day.
