The European Union on Thursday, June 18, will agree to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia for a year, rather than six months as had been the norm, said Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent Rikard Jozwiak, according to
his post on X
.
"The idea is that EU leaders tomorrow will agree to extend anti-Russian sectoral sanctions for 12 months, not 6 as has always been the case so far. Seems like have no objections. The formal extension will take place for the first time later in the summer," the journalist wrote.
As is known, the main blow of the anti-Russian sanctions in the 21st package is aimed at the aggressor's energy sector, which helps it finance the war in Ukraine.

The European Union finally announced its
latest package
of proposed sanctions on Russia, after a week spent trying to satisfy nearly impossible demands by U.S. President Donald Trump for Europe to pile even more pressure on the Kremlin.
The measures flagged in the EU’s 19th sanctions package, while still incremental, and subject to approval by all EU member states, would represent a significant tightening of Europe’s efforts to cut out the financial and material underpinnings of Moscow’s war machine.

MOSCOW - Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday predicted the Russian economy would withstand the European Union's latest sanctions package and said Moscow would intensify its strikes against Ukraine.
Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, made his comments after the European Union agreed an 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including measures aimed at dealing further blows to the Russian oil and energy industry.
In a post on his official Telegram channel, Medvedev said the new sanctions would do little to alter Russia's stance on the conflict, just as previous rounds of s…

BRUSSELS — The European Union unveiled a new package of proposed sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, targeting the country’s banking, energy and trade sectors in an effort to weaken its economy.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s economy was "slowing sharply" as she presented the bloc’s 21st sanctions package, seven weeks after Council President António Costa
announced the previous one entering into force
. "Four years after the start of its full-scale invasion, Russia has clearly failed to subjugate Ukraine," she said.
The new measures now need to be approved unanimously by EU countries.

The EU wants to bar former or current soldiers who have served the Russian armed forces from entering the bloc, according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. "Europe’s door should not be open to Russia’s (ex-)combatants," she
wrote on X
.
The measures include new export restrictions on goods that could be used by Russia’s military industry, as well as import restrictions, in von der Leyen’s words, to "lock in diversification away from Russian imports."
The package targets…

The European Union on June 26 reached an agreement to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months, an undisclosed EU official told the Kyiv Independent.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk
confirmed
the agreement shortly afterwards in a joint press conference alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa at the EU summit in Brussels.
The EU made the decision on June 26 to extend its current sanctions against Russia for six more months, Tusk said.
"We still have a decision about the 18th sanctions package ahead of us," he added.

Von der Leyen unveils new sanctions package against Russia - Ukrinform
The European Commission on Tuesday proposed a new, 21st package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, targeting, among other areas, the energy sector, financial services, cryptocurrency trading, and, for the first time, the fishing industry.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, the package was presented in Brussels by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“Almost every day now, we wake up to the same kind of news. Another major Russian strike on Ukrainian cities, targeting civilians blindly. We also wake up to the news of drones violating European airspace. Over the Baltics, and along our Eastern borders. Two weeks ago, a drone crashed into an apartment building in Romania. Another one exploded in the port of Constanța just last week,” von der Leyen said.
She argued that these developments demonstrate Russia’s failure to subjugate Ukraine.
At the same time, she noted, the cost Russia is paying for continuing the war is steadily increasing.
“The price Russia pays is heavier by the day. And it is paid primarily by the people of Russia. They are mourning sons, brothers and husbands. And at the s…

The European Union’s new sanctions package against Russia will target the energy sector, banks, cryptocurrency platforms and include additional restrictions on foreign trade. European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen
announced the proposals while presenting the Commission’s latest sanctions package.
“Our oil price cap has a built-in adjustment mechanism to follow the market. It was not made for market shocks like the one caused by the closure of the Strait in Hormuz. So we propose to simply pause the adjustment until January next year,”
von der Leyen said.
It should be recalled that oil prices have risen amid the conflict in the Middle East, meaning that the price cap on Russian oil would normally increase as well. The European Commission proposes keeping it at its current level.
In addition, the Commission proposes adding another 30 vessels to the sanctions li…

As of Tuesday, EU officials are working on the 21st sanctions package against Russia, expected to be presented next week. The proposed measures would tighten restrictions on Russian oil exports, expand sanctions on energy companies and shadow fleet vessels, and could include new penalties against Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill.
The EU is racing to finalize its 21st package of sanctions against Russia as Moscow intensifies threats toward Europe and continues its war against Ukraine, according to Politico.
The package is set to further target Russia’s oil revenues, financial sector and sanctions-evasion networks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting on engine-building industry development in Samara, Russia, Friday, Sept. 5, 2025.
A team of European officials, led by
EU sanctions envoy
David O'Sullivan, will visit the US Treasury on Monday to discuss various forms of economic pressure to exert on Russia, including new sanctions, a person familiar with the meeting told The Associated Press.

European Commission
, Ursula von der Leyen, on Friday ahead of the meeting as a follow-up to Vice President J D Vance's conversation with the top European official a day earlier.
The meeting comes as President Donald Trump has grown increasingly frustrated by his inability to end the 3 1/2-year Russian war in Ukraine prompted by Moscow's invasion.
Trump has tried in vain to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for direct talks aimed at ending the war despite holding a summit with the Russian leader last month in Ala…
