Part of Great Allegheny Passage to close next month for landslide repairs
A two-mile segment of the Great Allegheny Passage will close to travelers next month in favor of a temporary shuttle service as contractors take preventative measures against landslides in the area.
The trail will close between the Whitaker flyover in Whitaker and the Port Perry flyover near Duquesne from July 9 through Aug. 6. Additionally, a segment of the trail near Kennywood in West Mifflin will close the evening of July 9, reopening the following day.
Workers will remove “potentially unstable material” during the closures on steep hillsides that are susceptible to falling rocks, downed trees and landslides, according to the Great Allegheny Passage’s website.
Regional Trail Corporation President Mark Place said in a release the maintenance was “necessary to reduce the risks to trail users,” adding that officials were working toward funding a long-term solution.
The 150-mile trail connects Pittsburgh’s Point State Park with Cumberland, a city in Western Maryland, and draws around 1 million pedestrians and cyclists per year.

A 1.2-mile stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage is going quiet for most of July as crews move in to shore up an unstable hillside beneath Kennywood Park in West Mifflin. The temporary shutdown hits the heavily used bike-and-pedestrian corridor between Duquesne and Homestead and is aimed at cutting the risk of rockfall and landslides, so summer riders will need to reroute or reschedule.
According to
CBS Pittsburgh
, KDKA reporter Chris DeRose said the segment will be closed for most of July while crews tackle ongoing landslide concerns and clear unstable material. The station’s coverage includes on-the-ground video and comments from local officials about the short-term work.
Where the closure hits
The project is focused on milepost 137 under Kennywood, bracketed by the Whitaker and Port Perry flyovers, a corridor that the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy has flagged as vulnerable to rockfall and slope movement. As outlined by
the GAP Conservancy
, trail users in that stretch should keep an eye out for debris and be ready to stop or turn a…

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — A month-long closure of a segment of the Great Allegheny Passage starts in July.
The Regional Trail Corporation says part of the Great Allegheny Passage in West Mifflin will close starting the evening of July 9 for safety scaling.
The closure, located between the Whitaker flyover and the Port Perry flyover, is expected to last approximately 28 days to address rockfall hazards near milepost 137 of the trail.
Officials say this segment of the Great Allegheny Passage, situated below Kennywood Park and SR 837, has experienced several rockfalls and landslides over the years. Scaling is a process designed to remove loose or unstable material that could dislodge, acting as periodic maintenance for slopes with potential rockfall hazards.
Mark Place, president of the Regional Trail Council Board, understands the closure of such a popular trail impacts nearby communities, but says it’s necessary.
“The Great Allegheny Passage is an important economic generator that attracts over a million people a year to this region and any closure affects the trail towns and businesses along it,” Place said. He…
