Police said the accident took place at around 5:15 p.m. and involved two East Midlands Railway trains.
“We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has very sadly died,’’ police said in a statement.

London:A collision between two trains about 100 kilometres north of London has killed at least one person and injured dozens, British Transport Police said.
Emergency services were called about 5.15pm on Friday (UK time) to the line south of Bedford, where two East Midlands Railway trains were involved in the crash.
Both trains were travelling south to London’s St Pancras station when they collided outside the town of Bedford, according to information on rail tracking websites. Emergency services deployed resources to the scene including an air ambulance and hazardous incident team from the East of England Ambulance Service.
“We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has, very sadly, died,” police said in a statement.
“A major incident has been declared, and officers are continuing to respond at the scene alongside colleagues from Bedfordshire Police and the local fire and rescue and ambulance services.”

Aerial footage of the aftermath shows the two damaged East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains with most carriages on the tracks but at least one shunted off.
Footage shows a long line of emergency vehicles on a rural road as emergency crews and passengers of the two southbound trains gathered in the neighbouring field.
The two East Midlands Railway services involved were the 4.40pm from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras, the rail operator said.
Air ambulance helicopters are on the ground after the collision happened just south of the Elstow interchange between the A421 and the A6.

At least one person was killed and dozens more were injured after two trains collided north of London on Friday, British officials said.
British Transport Police said its officers responded to the collision in Bedford, a market town around 56 miles north of England's capital.
East of England Ambulance Service said in a statement that at least one person died and 89 others were injured. Of those injured, 11 had "very serious injuries," 22 were "seriously injured" and 56 sustained minor injuries, the ambulance service said.
The person killed was a railroad engineer of one of the involved trains, according to Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, a union that represents public transportation workers in the U.K.
"We are devastated to learn that a train driver and former RMT rep has tragically died as a result of today's crash between Luton and Bedford," Dempsey said in a statement

Two trains have collided this evening (Friday) with a major emergency response currently under way. Reports suggest there have been serious casualties following the incident between London St Pancras and Bedford, which is understood to have involved two passenger trains.
Images of the aftermath appear to show two damaged East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains that are still on the tracks. At least one is a Luton Airport Express train and passengers could be seen gathering by the neighbouring fields.
Bedford hospital was expecting at least 50 casualties to arrive and had ordered “all hands on deck”, The Times is reporting. Appeals have been sent for staff to come in to assist with the response.

<p>British Transport Police (BTP) said on Friday it was responding to reports of a collision involving two trains about 60 miles north of London, with media reports saying the major incident had resulted in multiple injuries.</p>
<p>A video posted on social media showed what appeared to be the front of one train entangled with the back of another, with both still on the tracks.</p>

Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision between two London-bound trains on the line between Bedford and Luton.
Multiple passengers are reported injured, with some covered in blood.
Around 30 ambulances are said to have raced to the scene.
Several air ambulances were also reported to have been despatched.
All lines were closed between St Pancras and Bedford as crews deal with the emergency incident.
A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “We're responding to reports of a collision involving two trains in the Bedford area.
“We'll share more information as soon as possible.”

The services are believed to have collided between Luton and Bedford, just north of London. There is a reported large emergency services presence at the scene.
According to East Midlands Trains and National Rail, trains through the area cannot currently run.

National Rail said: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Luton and Bedford. Whilst they carry out their work, all lines are closed. As a result, trains between London St Pancras International and Bedford / Leicester may be cancelled or revised.
"This is expected until the end of the day."

Network Rail, which manages Britain’s rail infrastructure, said its “absolute priority” was ensuring “everyone receives the care and support they need”.

Passengers are feared seriously injured after two trains collided in the Bedford area.

British Transport Police said they are responding to reports of a “collision involving two trains” in the Bedford area.
Over 30 emergency service vehicles and an air ambulance responded following the crash. That includes at least five air ambulances which arrived and then left.
Firefighters are also at the scene, and the service has urged people to avoid the area.
Bedford hospital is reportedly expecting at least 50 casualties to arrive and had ordered “all hands on deck”.
Staff were also warned that fatalities could be expected.

A train driver has died and 89 people have been left injured after a two-train smash between Bedford and Luton.
Eleven people suffered "very serious" injuries and 22 were seriously injured when the two passenger trains crashed into each other. A further 56 people sustained minor injuries.
British Transport Police said that one person died in the collision. The deceased has been confirmed as one of the train drivers, Dave Calfe, general secretary of Aslef the train drivers' union confirmed.
The crash
happened at around 5.15pm and all lines are blocked between Luton and Bedford have been blocked as emergency services swarm the area to deal with the aftermath.
Passengers reported hearing a "huge bang" before the sudden crash which left passengers bloodied.

Two trains have collided in the Bedford area, police have said.
Aerial footage of the aftermath shows the two damaged East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains with most carriages on the tracks but at least one shunted off.
Footage shows a long line of emergency vehicles on a rural road as emergency crews and passengers of the two southbound trains gathered in the neighbouring field.
The two East Midlands Railway services involved were the 4.40pm from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras, the rail operator said.
Air ambulance helicopters are on the ground after the collision happened just south of the Elstow interchange between the A421 and the A6.
