The Supreme Court Monday declined to take up an appeal from President Donald Trump over a $5 million verdict and finding that he sexually abused and defamed

Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and then she sued him again in 2022 for defamation and battery after New York enacted a law allowing the victims of sexual abuse to file civil claims for past incidents. In an unusual quirk, the second case — the one filed in 2022 — went to trial first and the jury awarded Carroll $5 million.

NEW YORK (AP) — Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll asked a judge Tuesday to require President Donald Trump to pay her $5 million from a jury verdict that concluded Trump sexually abused her in the 1990s and defamed her after she publicly described the attack in 2019.
Lawyers for Carroll filed papers in Manhattan federal court to say Trump is unjustly trying to further delay release of the money after the Supreme Court refused Monday to hear an appeal of the 2003 civil jury verdict.
The amount has grown to nearly $5.8 million with interest and should be required by the court to be disbursed, the lawyers wrote, saying Trump has resumed his defamatory attacks against Carroll as his lawyers considered asking the high court to reconsider i…

US President Donald Trump has failed in his attempt to have a sexual abuse ruling against him reviewed by the Supreme Court.
The justices on Monday rejected Trump's bid to overturn a $US5 million ($A7.3 million) verdict in favour of E Jean Carroll in a case in which a jury found him liable for sexually abusing the former magazine columnist and then defaming her.
In 2023, a New York jury deemed it proven that Trump had attacked, sexually abused and later defamed Carroll in a prestigious New York department store in 1996.
Trump was ordered to pay $US5 million in compensation.
Trump has been battling Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, ever since she published an excerpt from her memoir in 2019 in which she alleged that Trump had raped her around 1996 in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan.
Trump denied Carroll's claims, saying she lied about the accusations both in 2019 whi…

President
Donald Trump
unleashed a blistering response to the
Supreme Court
on Monday after it refused to intervene in his bid to overturn a jury’s finding that he sexually abused and defamed

, leaving intact a $5 million civil judgment.
The president accused the justices of declining to review a "Fake Case" and calling the ruling an "Injustice" driven by political "Weaponization" and "Lawfare." The brief, unexplained order arrives as the court issues some of its most consequential end‑of‑term decisions, many of which are central to Trump’s legal and political agenda. Meanwhile, Carroll posted on Substack shortly after the ruling, celebrating the outcome and describing the Supreme Court’s decision as a victory.
The move effectively ends Trump’s attempt to erase the first federal verdict against him as he continues to face mounting legal exposure. The decision means

Judge orders Trump to pay writer $5 m for assault, defamation
NEW YORK, United States (AFP) — A United States (US) judge ordered President Donald Trump on Wednesday to pay writer E Jean Carroll $5 million after a civil jury found that he sexually assaulted and defamed her.
Last week, the US Supreme Court refused to hear Trump’s appeal against the original May 2023 judgment ordering him to pay $2 million in damages for sexual assault and $3 million for defamatory statements.
Carroll, a former journalist and columnist who is now 82, accused the president of assaulting her in a dressing room of a New York department store in 1996.
When the allegations were published in a 2019 book, the Republican billionaire called her a “nut job” and claimed she had fabricated her case.
By declining to hear the appeal, the Supreme Court made the judgment final.
On Wednesday, federal judge Lewis Kaplan ordered that the $5 million Trump had been required to deposit with the court be paid.
The ruling also requires payment of unspecified accrued interest.

On Monday, the Supreme CourtdeclinedPresident Donald Trump’s request to review a 2023 verdict that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump is legally required to pay Carroll the $5 million, as directed in 2023.
On his Truth Social account, Trumpposted, “Surprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to ‘review’ a Fake Case brought against me by a woman I never met,” and called the defamation case “ridiculous.”
Trump had asked the Supreme Court to review and overturn the case in 2025.
Two previous courts have ruled against Trump in this case, finding the president liable for sexual assault and defamation.
Carroll, a former columnist forElle Magazine, published a memoir in 2019 that described Trump sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in Manhattan in the 1990s. Trump denied the account. But in 2022, the New York Adult Survivors Act went into effect, which granted adult survivors of sexual violence a one-year window to sue abusers regardless of how long …

The justices turned away Trump's appeal, meaning the 2023 jury verdict and a $5 million civil judgment remain in place.
The case arose from a federal lawsuit Carroll filed in New York City alleging that Trump assaulted her in the dressing room of a department store in 1996. The defamation claims relate to statements he made about her after his first term in office, in which he described her claims as a "con job" and "hoax."
E. Jean Carroll arrives at Manhattan federal court for the second defamation trial against former President Donald Trump on Jan. 17, 2024.

The Supreme Court has rejected a push by President Donald Trump to throw out a jury’s finding that he sexually abused the writer E Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s and later defamed her.
The high court declined to take up the case in a brief, unexplained order, as is typical.
There were no noted dissents.
Mr Trump’s lawyers had argued that allegations leading to the five million dollar verdict were propped up by “highly inflammatory” evidentiary rulings, including those that allowed the testimony of two other women who accused Mr Trump of sexual abuse decades ago.
Mr Trump has denied all three women’s allegations.

Supreme Court rejects Trump appeal of E. Jean Carroll verdict
TheSupreme Courton Monday said it would not hear an appeal by PresidentDonald Trumpof a New York federal court jury's verdict awarding the writerE. Jean Carroll$5 million for having been sexually abused and defamed by Trump.
Trump separately was found civilly liable by another Manhattan federal court jury for having defamed Carroll. She was awarded $83.3 million in that case, which Trump is appealing at a lower federal appeals court.
The Supreme Court did not explain why it rejected Trump's request that it hear his appeal of the $5 million verdict from the 2023 trial, as is typical for such orders. None of the justices, three of whom were appointed to the high court by Trump, issued a written dissent to the decision.
Trump's lawyers said the trial judge in the case improperly allowed testimony from two other women who said they were targets of sexual misconduct by Trump as well as the playing of the so-called "Access Hollywood" tape in which the president years ago is heard bragging about kissing and grabbing women.
"Today's Supreme Court decision affirms once and for all the jury's unanimous verdict that President …

The U.S. Supreme Court this week declined to hear Trump's appeal of the case.
Attorneys for E. Jean Carroll on Tuesday asked a federal judge to order President Donald Trump to pay her the $5 million judgment a Manhattan jury said she is owed after he was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
The U.S. Supreme Court this week, with no dissents, declined to hear Trump's appealof the verdict and judgment.
Carroll's attorneys said in a new court filing that Trump's lawyers told them the president may ask the Supreme Court to reconsider.
"Defendant's counsel contacted Carroll's undersigned counsel to inquire whether Carroll would consent to a further stay of enforcement of the judgment in this action so that Defendant can ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its denial of certiorari in her case," Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan wrote.
"[A]fter four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end," Kaplan wrote. "And under the Court's Stipulation and Order, Carroll is now entitled to obtain payment of the money due under the judgment."
