Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Friday endorsed NYS Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani to become New York City’s next mayor in the upcoming elections.
Jeffries, who represents New York City’s eighth Congressional District, said in a statement that Mamdani had won the party’s primary in a “free and fair election” and called on Democrats to unite against what he said was the “existential” threat posed by President Donald Trump.
“Zohran Mamdani has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy,” Jeffries said.

On Thursday, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani
visited
President Trump in the Oval Office — their
second meeting
since Mamdani was elected. “I had a productive meeting with President Trump this afternoon,” the mayor
wrote
in a post on X. He confirmed early reports that the two of them talked about New York housing, adding, “I’m looking forward to building more housing in New York City.”
Mamdani included a photo of the visit, where Trump, seated at the Resolute Desk, is cheesing like a toddler post-ice-cream cone, while Mamdani stands behind him, trying to look as neutral as possible. Trump also brought a couple of props for their photo op: a printout of the front page of the
Daily News
from the ’70s reading “Ford to City: Drop Dead” and a replica redesigned Trump’s way — “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” In Trump’s version, the newspaper pledged that Trump “backs new era of housing,” boasting 12,000-plus homes seemingly in progress.
In a follow-up

The Democratic primary victory of
ultra leftist Darializa Avila Chevalier over Uptown Congressman Adriano Espaillat
, pushed across the finish line by Zohran Mamdani, is a dangerous blow for American politics, dragging the party towards its extreme left wing and threatening to destroy the broad coalition that makes for a healthy party and a healthy democracy.
The Republican Party has already been ruined by a decade of Donald Trump pumping the extreme right wing and wiping out the moderates and centrists. And Trump did it again on Tuesday, in the most northern reaches of New York State to fill the seat of departing Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, propelling
MAGA man Anthony Constantino over a stalwart conservative assemblyman
who was backed by the GOP establishment.

Espaillat spent 20 years trying to get to Washington and another 10 years in Congress. He arrived to give his concession speech and left in under 10 minutes.

NEW YORK
–
Mr Zohran Mamdani, the young upstart of the US left, was sworn in on Jan 1 to take over as New York mayor for a term sure to see him cross swords with President Donald Trump.
After the clocks struck midnight, bringing in 2026, Mr Mamdani took his oath of office at an abandoned subway stop to begin managing the US’ largest city. He is New York’s first Muslim mayor.
His office said the understated venue beneath City Hall reflected his commitment to working people, after the 34-year-old Democrat campaigned on promises to address the soaring cost of living.
“This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime,” he told reporters after taking his oath.
But it remains to be seen if Mr Mamdani – virtually unknown a year ago – can deliver on his ambitious agenda, which envisions rent freezes, universal childcare and free pu…

As soon as a New York City mayoral candidate wins election – and in most cases for several months before – the city’s political class and media corps eagerly anticipate news of who he will hire to actually carry out his vision.
That fervor may be especially strong for this mayor. Zohran Mamdani pulled off a stunning victory to rise from two-and-a-half-term Assembly member to mayor. But his youth (a young millennial at 34 years old) and scant management experience have attracted particular attention to the balance of old hands and newcomers that will fill his administration, as well as their diversity along the ideological spectrum.
Keep up with Mamdani’s hires and appointments below, as of June 16, 2026.

We are now 100 days into the Zohran Mamdani era – a milestone the city’s youngest mayor in a century is commemorating with signature enthusiasm and communication skills. On Sunday,
he’ll deliver a rally-style
address at the Knockdown Center in Queens.
Just a few months into his history-making tenure, it’s still wait-and-see on Mamdani’s signature campaign promises. The Rent Guidelines Board
is about two weeks into
its annual process to determine whether to freeze rents for nearly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments, though he managed to appoint a sympathetic majority to the board.
The mayor has acknowledged
that his plan to make buses free won’t be happening this year after state lawmakers declined to wrap it into their budget proposals. City-owned grocery stores aren’t going to be popping up around the five boroughs anytime soon either. The mayor’s brightest spot is his pledge to create a free, universal child care system. While a truly universal program is likely still years down the line, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s

Last Tuesday, all Zohran Mamdani–endorsed candidates won—the mayor went three-for-three in congressional endorsements and five-for-five in state legislative endorsements. His clean sweep offers a glimpse of how a leader can reshape an entire party—and it shows why it’s time for the left to get behind a possible presidential run by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani barreled into City Hall vowing to tackle the city’s notoriously high cost of living, partly by fulfilling a campaign promise repeated with almost monomaniacal zealin social media ads, speeches and rallies: “As your next mayor, I will freeze your rent.”
On Thursday evening, a board he controls made good on that signature pledge.
The city’s Rent Guidelines Board, an independent panel of mayoral appointees, approved a rent freeze covering both one-year and two-year leases for people living in about 1 million rent-stabilized apartments.
The vote, while expected, is a big win for Mamdani, allowing him to beat back skepticism over his ability to deliver on his affordability agenda.
