Pope Leo XIV on Thursday visited Spain's Canary Islands, the once-notorious centre of the European migration debate, where he threw a bouquet of flowers in the sea in tribute to the migrants who perished trying to reach the Atlantic archipelago. The pontiff made a plea for "human dignity" and condemned leaders, including Christians, who turn them away with "indifference".

Pope Leo XIV blesses a child during a meeting with migrants at the "Las Raices" center, in San Cristobal de la Laguna in Spain.
LAS PALMAS, Spain (RNS) — Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt speech addressing migrants on Thursday, reminding them of their worth and dignity even as they suffer at the hands of traffickers and mafias. He also spoke directly to the church and states — especially in Europe — underlining their duty to promote and protect migrants.
Leo said those who exploit migrants are "monsters" — as are people who are indifferent to their suffering. He called for a "conversion," allowing people to see migrants beyond mere statistics.
"Only then can we understand that that little girl could be our daughter, and that those faces could be part of our family. Then, our conscience is left with no excuses," he said. "Human dignity has no passport and does not lose its value when crossing a border."

Pope Urges Prisoners to Make a Fresh Start
Pope Leo XIV visited one of Spain’s largest prisons during his trip to the country, urging inmates to take responsibility for their actions and work toward a better future.
At the Brians 1 prison near Barcelona, which houses around 1,000 inmates, the pope stressed that a person’s past does not have to define their future and that everyone has the opportunity to change the course of their life.
The visit was the first by a pope to a Spanish prison.
Leo XIV, the first American pope, is on a week-long tour of Spain focused on the consequences of growing global conflicts and the treatment of migrants.
During the visit, one female inmate spoke about her struggle with faith and the pain her actions had caused her family, describing the pope’s visit as an extraordinary moment in her life.
The rights and dignity of prisoners have been a recurring theme of Leo XIV’s papacy. He also visited a prison during a trip to Africa in April.
His predecessor, Pope Francis, likewise made prison outreach a priority and visited a prison in Rome just days before his death.

Pope Leo has appealed to world leaders to treat migrants more humanely, warning in a visit to Spain's Canary Islands that history will condemn those who allowed people fleeing war or poverty to suffer.
In what he called an "appeal to the conscience" of politicians in Europe and the international community, the first US pope said "human dignity has no passport and does not lose its value when crossing a border".
"We cannot grow accustomed to counting the dead," said the Pope on Thursday at Gran Canaria's Port of Arguineguin, dubbed the "Dock of Shame" by relief organisations after some 1000 migrants were stranded in squalid conditions there in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic.
"May history not accuse us of turning the pain of those who suffer into a common sight along our shores," he urged thousands gathered near a memorial to migrants lost at sea.

Pope Leo XIV has made the defence of migrants one of the pillars of his papacy — Tiziana FABI
Pope Leo XIV on Saturday pressed Europe to do more to protect and integrate migrants as he visited Italy's Lampedusa island, a major port of call for those risking the perilous crossing from Africa.
His trip to the migration frontline was a stark message to both EU and US leaders in a period of both growing intolerance and indifference.
The Catholic Church's first US pope, who has clashed with President Donald Trump's administration over its treatment of migrants, chose to mark July 4, the United States' 250th anniversary of independence, at a migration hotspot.
Leo's visit also comes just two weeks after the European Union's approval of new migrant rules allowing much broader detention powers and the creation of deportation centres outside the bloc.
"From this far-flung corner of Europe on the Mediterranean Sea, one can more clearly perceive the momentous challenge that the phenomenon of migration poses to Eur…

Calling integration a "reciprocal journey", the pope urged migrants learn the language of their host country, "to respect its laws, to get to know its customs, to participate in communal life", during a meeting in Tenerife with organisations that work with migrants.
Leo also warned that migrants face a "silent shipwreck" after arrival, "left alone in a city, without a voice, without ties, work or a sense of security, and exposed to those who take advantage of vulnerability".

Pope Leo will visit a polarized Spain in political turmoil but where all ...
In the divisive political climate in Spain, some say there is the risk that political factions will try to use the popeʼs words to their advantage.
Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Spain will take place against a political and social backdrop marked by intense polarization.
The divided political climate coincides with an unprecedented event in Spanish democracy: the indictment on charges of alleged corruption by a former prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, who held the office when Pope Benedict XVI visited the country 15 years ago.
Zapatero’s scheduled court appearance in connection with his alleged involvement in a scheme linked to the 2021 public bailout of the airline Plus Ultra, originally set for June 2, has been postponed by the judge to June 17–18.
The cardinal archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo, downplayed the impact the case will have on the popeʼs June 6–12 visit. “We are accustomed to operating amid many events in political life. That is simply part of life, and the headlines keep shifting,” he stated in an interview withEWTN News.

SPAIN made statement MIGRANT in Arguineguin, Canarias, Spain
"Sooner or later, it will be known whether we protected life or whether we yielded to indifference."

Pope to human traffickers: Repent! Divine justice awaits you
Meeting organisations working with migrants in Tenerife, Pope Leo XIV calls integration a shared responsibility that restores dignity and belonging, while urging human traffickers to repent before facing divine justice.

Pope Leo has one again called for a renewed commitment to migrant integration insisting that welcome must go beyond emergency assistance and become a process that restores dignity, belonging and opportunity.
Addressing Church groups, charities and civil organisations in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on Friday, during the final day of his Apostolic Journey to Spain, the Pope reflected on the role the Canary Islands continue to play as one of Europe's principal migration routes.

LAMPEDUSA, Italy, July 4 (Reuters) - Pope Leo marked the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence on Saturday with an appeal to Americans to welcome and protect immigrants, in a letter sent to his home country as he visited Italy's migrant frontline island of Lampedusa.
Leo, who drew the ire of Donald Trump last year after calling the U.S. president's hardline anti-immigration policies "inhuman", also urged the world to become "more human" and to help those fleeing war and poverty.
During a day trip to Lampedusa, a gateway for migrants risking dangerous Mediterranean crossings into Europe from Africa, the pope urged European leaders to do more to assist arrivals, which have topped 7,000 this year.
Separately, in an appeal sent to the U.S. for its landmark anniversary, Leo said the Catholic value of defending life includes "welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants."
"To receive (immigrants) with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that b…

Pope Leo XIV has urged the world not to remain passive in the face of human suffering, particularly as it relates to the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis. He warned against what he described as the “globalization of powerlessness”—an attitude that spreads when we grow indifferent to the suffering of others and believe that nothing can be done to help.

At Las Raíces reception center in Spain’s Canary Islands, the pope heard testimonies from migrants who risked their lives crossing the Atlantic and urged a more humane response rooted in dignity.
TENERIFE, Canary Islands — “No one leaves their land, their family and their roots by choice when they can live in peace,” said Bousso Diouf, a woman from Senegal who spoke with the moral authority of someone who risked her life crossing the Atlantic in a wooden boat, knowing the journey could last a week or end adrift at sea.
Diouf was among the migrants who greeted Pope Leo XIV at the Las Raíces reception center in Tenerife, where some 700 sub-Saharan African migrants — all adult men — are currently housed. The center is located in the humid Las Raíces area of Tenerife, a eucalyptus-filled area about 3,300 feet above sea level.
The number is relatively low compared with the hardest years of the “cayuco” crisis, especially at the end of 2024, when the center received between 2,000 and 3,000 migrants amid overcrowding and widely reported tensions.
Most of those currently housed at the center come from Senegal,…

"Sooner or later, it will be known whether we protected life or whether we yielded to indifference."

Pope Leo XIV's highly-anticipated trip to Spain will end a 15-year wait for Spanish Catholics who have not received a papal visit since Pope Benedict XVI traveled to Madrid for World Youth Day in 2011.
But Leo's June 6-12 visit will show how he speaks on key issues that reverberate far beyond the Iberian peninsula.
With stops in Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands, the pope is dedicating an unusually long time to his visit to Spain. His scheduled
trip
to France Sept. 25-28 is only four days.
While Spain is familiar ground for Leo, who traveled there frequently as head of the Augustinian order, as pope…

Madrid: Awaiting Pope Leo’s arrival and a revitalization of the faith
Fifteen years after Pope Benedict XVI’s World Youth Day in Madrid, Pope Leo XIV travels to the same city, where people hope for encouragement and a revitalization of the country's faith.
By Kielce Gussie - Madrid
Tomorrow, the city of Madrid will welcome Pope Leo XIV for the first leg of his Apostolic Journey to Spain. Final preparations are underway in the country’s capital: roads are blocked off, floral arrangements spelling out “Leo XIV” have been unveiled, and the Vatican flag lines the central streets of the city.

With less than 24 hours before the papal plane touches down, Professor Yago De la Cierva, General Coordinator of the Papal Visit to Spain, spoke to Vatican News how this Apostolic Journey is a sign of hope for the people in Madrid and Spain as a whole.

Pope Leo XIV meets migrants on the Spanish island of Tenerife
The visit marked the final day of his weeklong trip to Spain
Dubai:Pope Leo XIVmet migrants at a reception centre on the Spanish island of Tenerife on Friday, urging greater compassion for those seeking a better life in Europe and calling for stronger action against human traffickers.
Addressing hundreds of migrants at the Las Raices reception centre, the Pope said, “In a sense, all of us are migrants, for we are all pilgrims on our way to our heavenly homeland.”
The visit marked the final day of his weeklong trip to Spain, which focused heavily on the challenges faced by irregular migrants. Tenerife, one of Spain’s Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, has become a key entry point for tens of thousands of migrants attempting to reach Europe.
Pope Leo called on governments, organisations and individuals to help make migration “more humane for everyone.” He also highlighted the need to combat trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable people.
Immigration remains a contentious political issue across Europe, with arrivals through the Canary Islands continuing to fuel debate over border policies and humanitarian resp…
