The Priyadarshini scheme in Kerala will provide free travel for women and transgender individuals on ordinary KSRTC buses, aiming to enhance mobility and promote an inclusive society.
The scheme, funded entirely by the state government, will be reviewed periodically, and KSRTC's operational costs will be covered through a dedicated financial mechanism.
While the scheme covers ordinary KSRTC services, it excludes higher-class services and special trips, and strict monitoring and action will be in place to prevent misuse and ensure compliance.

Thrissur: In a twist on the day of launch, passengers travelling on a

ordinary bus from Thrissur to Chalakudy were reportedly asked to pay fares shortly after the inauguration of the free travel scheme for women and transgender persons.
The scheme, named ‘Priyadarshini’, was officially inaugurated in Thrissur at around 9 am.
However, students who boarded the bus around 9:35 am said they were still charged ticket fares despite the announcement of free travel.
“System not updated,” says staff
According to passengers, the bus conductor collected fares citing that the system had not yet been updated to implement the free travel facility.
The explanation came even as the scheme was publicly launched earlier in the day, creating confusion among commuters and staff.

From promise to reality, 13 lakh Kerala women travel for free; private operators cry foul
Thiruvananthapuram:
Kerala’s first free travel initiative for women and transgender persons has received a massive public response, with the newly launched Priyadarshini Free Travel Scheme turning into a major success story on its very first day.
On the flip side, the private bus operators through this scheme have been rubbed the wrong way. The private operators said that, at the end of Monday night, a first assessment revealed that they failed to get even the money for diesel.
“We will assess things, and we are waiting to meet Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to explain our side,” said an office-bearer of the operators.
The free travel scheme, launched on Monday by the Satheesan-led state government, witnessed more than 13 lakh women travelling free on KSRTC ordinary buses on the inaugural day, marking a significant moment in Kerala’s public transport sector.
The response was reflected in the sharp rise in the number of women passengers.

The UDF government in Kerala will roll out its free bus travel scheme for women from June 15, fulfilling one of its key Assembly election promises.
Announcing the decision on Thursday, Transport Minister CP John said women will be able to travel free of cost on all ordinary buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from Monday.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan will formally launch the scheme at the Thampanoor bus station in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning. The inaugural service will be operated entirely by women staff members.
The scheme will cover all 3,125 ordinary buses in the KSRTC fleet.
John said the initiative is expected to cost around ₹2 crore a day, with the expenditure to be borne by the state government as the KSRTC is not in a position to absorb the burden. The final financial outlay will be assessed after the scheme has been operational for at least a month.

Kerala officially rolled out its free bus travel initiative today (June 15), joining a growing list of Indian states providing zero-fare transit for women and transgender individuals.
The Congress-led UDF government launched the 'Priyadarshini' scheme, offering free travel for women and transgender persons in ordinary KSRTC buses across the state, fulfilling a key election promise.
Many poor women who commute daily for work, including those employed as housemaids, will benefit from this initiative, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said after inaugurating the landmark programme by lighting a traditional lamp at a function held in Thampanoor KSRTC bus terminal in Thiruvananthapuram.
Besides the CM, Transport Minister C P John, Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes K A Thulasi and senior officials attended the inaugural function.

Synopsis:Kerala’s new UDF government plans to implement free bus travel for women from 15 June under the Indira Guarantee programme. While promising mobility, savings, and empowerment, the scheme faces financial hurdles as KSRTC struggles with debt and losses. Subsidy costs could exceed ₹80 crore monthly, raising concerns for private operators and sustainability despite strong social benefits.
After the second Cabinet meeting held on 20 May, Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan reassured that from 15 June, women in Kerala will be able to travel free in KSRTC buses, marking one of the biggest welfare promises of the new UDF government.
The promise was made in the UDF manifesto before the Assembly elections and is part of the Indira Guarantee programme in Kerala.
Inspired by models already functioning in states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the scheme aims to reduce travel expenses for women and improve mobility, employment access and economic independence.
However, this major welfare promise of the newly …

Private bus operators in West Bengal claim revenue losses following the introduction of free bus travel for women on state-run services. They have urged the government to adopt a kilometre-based operational scheme to offset losses and ensure the sector's viability
Kolkata:Free ride for women on West Bengal government-run buses has been a welcome move for many. However, private bus operators say they have been suffering losses due to the outflux of women passengers to state-run buses and higher fuel costs.
To offset losses, operators are seeking support from the state government through a “kilometre scheme”, under which the transport department integrates privately owned buses into its fleet, while owners provide drivers and maintain the vehicles for a fixed payment per kilometre operated.

THIRUVANNATHAPURAM:The Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala launched its first Indira Guarantee promises made during elections on Monday, offering free travel for women and transgender individuals in KSRTC ordinary buses under the Priyadarshini scheme.

Thrissur: Private bus operators in Kerala on Tuesday expressed strong concern over the state's newly launched free travel scheme for women in ordinary KSRTC buses, alleging that the government implemented it without consulting them and warned that it could severely affect their survival.
Representatives of private bus operators' organisations said women constitute a substantial share of their daily passengers and that many have shifted to KSRTC services following the launch of the 'Priyadarshini' scheme on Monday.
Private Bus Operators Federation General Secretary Hamsa claimed the number of women passengers in private buses has dropped sharply since the scheme came into effect.

THIRUVANTHAPURAM:Reporting a daily revenue loss of Rs 1500-2500 for many private buses following the implementation of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme for women, the Transport Minister CP John on Monday said the issue has been taken seriously and would examine measures to address the concerns of private bus operators.
The minister said the impact of the Priyadarshini scheme has not been uniform across the state. In taluks such as Neyyattinkara, where the number of private buses is comparatively low, the scheme has had little effect on operators. Similarly, in Malappuram, where KSRTC services are relatively fewer, private buses have not witnessed significant losses.
However, in regions where KSRTC and private buses operate in almost equal numbers, women passengers have largely opted for KSRTC buses offering free travel. As a result, the daily collections of several private buses have fallen by around 1500-2500, the minister informed the Assembly, adding that the government would address the issue after careful consideration.

The Kerala government’s Priyadarshini free bus travel scheme for women and transgender persons was officially launched on Monday, June 15, with Chief Minister V D Satheesan flagging off a KSRTC bus operated by an all-women crew at the Thampanoor Bus Station in Thiruvananthapuram.
Inaugurating the scheme, Chief Minister Satheesan said the initiative was a right, not a favour extended by the government. He added that the state was allocating Rs 800 crore annually for the scheme.
Addressing concerns raised by private bus operators, the Chief Minister assured them that any losses suffered by the private sector due to the scheme would be compensated.
The free travel initiative was one of the five Indira Guarantees promised by the Congress-led UDF during the Assembly election campaign. Thiruvananthapuram: All women, irrespective of age or income, will be eligible for free travel on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses from June 15, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan announced on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said the scheme, named "Priyadarshini", will initially be implemented on ordinary KSRTC services.
The government estimates that the scheme will impose an additional monthly financial burden of around ₹70 crore, which will be fully borne by the state. The annual additional expenditure for KSRTC is expected to be about ₹800 crore.
Satheesan said the government currently has no plans to hire private buses. However, it would study the possibility of deploying more buses in the Malabar region to improve services.
The Chief Minister also referred to the social media campaign against actor Salim Kumar, describing it as highly objectionable, and questioned who was behind it.
Commenting on state politics, Satheesan alleged that a CPM-BJP understanding had operated in Chathannoor and Kazhakkoottam during the Assembly elections. He di…

Following the implementation of the Priyadarshini scheme, KSRTC has witnessed a surge in female ridership from around 10 lakh to nearly 15 lakh.
Synopsis:Kerala’s private bus industry has been pushed into an unprecedented financial crisis following the introduction of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme, with operators reporting steep revenue losses, suspending services and demanding compensation while the government begins route mapping and an expert review without altering the welfare programme. As transport organisations prepare a statewide protest on 6 July and the Bus Operators Federation plans a six-day relay dharna from 20 to 25 July, the controversy has evolved into a wider debate over balancing social welfare with the survival of the state’s private public transport network.
These days, if you board a private bus in Kerala, chances are you might also be greeted with an unusual sales pitch.
Along with your ticket, the conductor may politely ask whether you would like to buy a packet of local snacks such as murukku, achappam or kuz…

The transport minister, along with officials from his department, met chief minister VD Satheesan at the Secretariat on Monday to discuss the implementation of the scheme.
