MICHIGAN made statement THE ASSOCIATED PRESS in Michigan, United States
Nearly
1,000 people in Michigan
have been diagnosed with a parasitic infection that can cause weeks of watery diarrhea, making it the largest such outbreak in state history and one of the nation's largest in years.
No deaths have been reported, and the source of the cyclospora infections hasn't been identified. Meanwhile, investigations into similar illnesses have been going on in 28 other states, including in Ohio, where people just across the Michigan border are also becoming sick. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17 states have
confirmed cases
from early May to June 16, including
Illinois
,
Maryland
,
Massachusetts
,
New York
and
Texas
.
Michigan officials first announced the outbreak last week, when they were aware of more than 170 cases — all in the southeastern corner of the state — since June 22. Michigan usually identifies only about 50 cases each year.
On Wednesday, the state reported
the number
had grown to 992, including about 40 hospitalizations. Just across the state line, Lucas County, Ohio, reported 306 cases as of Wednesday. Northwest Ohio has seen more than 400 cases.

Cyclosporiasis is a form of food poisoning you get from the parasiteCyclospora cayetanensis(C. cayetanensisorCyclospora). Symptoms usually start within a week of ingesting the parasite. The main symptom is watery diarrhea. But it can also cause other stomach problems, which may take a long time to go away.

You may want to be extra cautious with your fresh fruit and veggie platter this holiday weekend: An explosive diarrhea-causing parasite is behind a surge of summer food poisoning cases
right before Independence Day
.
Cyclosporiasis, a stomach-churning illness caused by a parasite often found on produce, has sickened hundreds across more than 17 U.S. states since May 1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health data. One state, Michigan,
is contending with a cluster of infections
that has already more than tripled its total case count compared with 2025.
While state health authorities, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are working to determine a common thread among the illnesses, a singularly related outbreak hasn't been identified. Instead, the cases thus far appear to be part of a seasonal surge, though officials are searching for a potential throughline.

Federal public health officials are investigating a multistate
Cyclospora outbreak
that has sickened at least 145 people in 17 states since May 1, 2026. The source of the contamination has not yet been identified, and summer — now underway — is the peak season for this intestinal parasite in the United States.
According to the CDC
, local, state, and federal public health authorities are investigating several clusters of cases, with illness onset dates ranging from May 1 through June 7, 2026. Three people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Past outbreaks of Cyclospora in the United States have repeatedly been linked to fresh produce — particularly leafy greens, cilantro, basil, and imported fresh herbs. Investigators have not yet identified a specific food or supplier in the current outbreak.
Why This Matters

Got a nasty stomach bug that won’t go away? It could be cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes weeks of debilitating diarrhea, cramps and bloating.
This infection tends to occur
during the warm summer months, but several states are reporting increases in cases beyond what they would normally expect at this point in the year.
Michigan, which says it typically logs about 50 cases of cyclosporiasis annually, says it has seen 681 since June 22, pointing to an outbreak with a common source. Several nearby states are also seeing unusual upticks.
Since the beginning of the year, Ohio says, it has received reports of 177 cyclosporiasis cases, with 171 of those coming in June, mostly since June 20.
New York state says it’s seen 112 cases this year – outside of New York City – with 107 of those reported since May 1.
Other states are reporting cases too, but it’s unclear whether these are related.

This summer, more than a third of U.S. states have reported cases of cyclosporiasis, an illness caused by a microscopic parasite found in human feces.
The outbreaks’ causes are unknown. Historically, fresh herbs and produce consumed raw were the culprits.
The illness isn’t life-threatening, but doctors recommend seeking treatment; it can be treated with antibiotics.
No one wants their summer festivities to be interrupted by gastrointestinal upset, but for hundreds of Americans who have contracted a nasty intestinal parasite it might already be too late.
Since May 1, more than 800 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in at least 18 states. By July 6, local, state and federal public health officials were investigating clusters of cases in multiple states to identify the outbreaks’ potential sources, according to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cyclospora may not be a household name, but a growing multistate outbreak in the U.S. has brought renewed attention to this foodborne parasite and the illness it causes, known as
cyclosporiasis.
A multistate Cyclospora outbreak is currently under investigation across the United States. As of mid-June, at least
145 people in 17 states have been diagnosed
, with 20 hospitalizations reported, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). New York, Illinois and Texas are among the states reporting cases.
The outbreak continues to grow, with
Michigan recently reporting an unusually large surge of more than 170 cases
across several counties. Public health agencies are working to identify the contaminated food source, which remains unknown.
While cyclosporiasis is relatively rare, it is more common during the warmer months when fresh produce consumption increases. In fact, case counts typically rise in the spring and summer, and the cyclosporiasis season is generally considered …
