All Sikh MLAs and cabinet ministers will appear before the Akal Takht, which summoned them on June 29 regarding the anti-sacrilege law, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Sunday. His statement came after a meeting with the party MLAs in Amritsar to decide the course of action in view of the directions of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs. The Secretariat of Akal Takht has issued official letters to all Sikh members of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and Sikh cabinet ministers, asking them to appear before the Akal Takht Secretariat on June 29 in connection with the 'The Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026', passed by the Punjab Government in April this year.
Bagicha Singh, in-charge of the Akal Takht Secretariat, said that acting on the directions of Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, official letters were sent to the Sikh legislators and cabinet ministers through email and WhatsApp using the contact details available on the Punjab Vidhan Sabha's official website. The notices were dispatched on June 17 and June 18, while a separate communication was sent to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on June 23.
He said officials of the Akal Takht Secretariat had also contacted the legislators and ministers over the phone to inform them about the letters and their scheduled appearance before the Akal Takht.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has convened a meeting of its MLAs in Punjab on Sunday, June 28, in view of the summons issued to Sikh legislators of all parties and Cabinet ministers of the state government by the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal body of Sikhism, sources said.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib, on Thursday summoned all the Sikh MLAs and ministers in Punjab to appear before it on June 29 and directed non-Sikh legislators and ministers to submit written explanations over the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2026, which prescribes life imprisonment for sacrilege of the Sikh holy scripture.

The development comes a few months after the Punjab Assembly passed a new law on April 13 that provides strict punishment for cases involving sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, including life imprisonment and heavy fines.
According to the directives all the legislators and including Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and cabinet ministers have been ordered to appear before the highest temporal body on June 29.
