The Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors whom President Donald Trump had attempted to fire. By a vote of 5-4, the court
held
that Cook can continue to remain in her job while her challenge to Trump’s efforts to fire her moves forward.
Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts contended that, if the Trump administration were correct, it “would in effect transform the Federal Reserve’s for-cause protection into at-will employment—an interpretive leap out of step with the statute Congress enacted and our Nation’s tradition of central banking protected from political interference.”
In his dissenting opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas called the ruling “incorrect.” “Although the Court expresses concern that the President removed a Board member for ‘the first time in the Federal Reserve’s 111-year history,’” he wrote, “it expresses no such concern that it today upholds an injunction against the President’s removal of an executive officer for the first time in the Constitution’s 237-year history.”

June 29 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said following a Supreme Court decision on Monday that thwarted her attempted firing by President Donald Trump that the ruling defends central bank independence.
"The Supreme Court's decision to leave the lower court's order in place and affirm the need for real process and real cause recognizes that Federal Reserve independence is essential to fulfilling the congressional mandate of price stability and maximum employment," Cook said in a statement. "I am grateful for this decision, not for my own sake, but for the sake of the American people, whose economic well-being depends on a central bank that answers to its mission, not political intimidation."

The court said Trump failed to afford her the protections she was entitled to.
The Supreme Court has blocked for now President Donald Trump's unprecedentedattempt to fire a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors,Lisa Cook, over the allegation of gross negligence and without any formal opportunity for her to answer the claims.
In a 5-4 ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court's majority, upheld limits Congress imposed on a president's attempt to remove members of the Fed as a legitimate protection of the institution's historical independence.
While the president has the ability to fire Cook "for cause," he wrote, "the President failed to afford Cook the procedural protections to which she was entitled by statute. Without such protections, she could not properly dispute the charges the President laid against her."
Roberts said the majority's "narrow" decision took no position on the underlying allegations against Cook or whether the president met the standard for removing her. The outcome leaves the door open to the possibility that Trump could continue to try to press his case.…

ruled 5-4 on June 29 that

‒ a decision seen as a loss for a president who has tried to influence the central bank and a win for the institution’s independence.
The court said Cook can remain on the central bank’s board of governors while she challenges Trump’s ability to dismiss her. That means lower courts will continue to debate whether Trump has "cause" to remove Cook, but Trump can't dismiss her outright while the process plays out.
"I am grateful for this decision, not for my own sake, but for the sake of the American people, whose economic well-being depends on a central bank that answers to its mission, not political intimidation," Cook said in a statement after the ruling. The Supreme Court Court ruled that President Donald Trump can fire leaders of independent agencies, but carved out an exception for the Federal Reserve in a separate decision allowing Fed governor Lisa Cook to stay in her job.
The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected President Donald Trump's legal rationale for removing Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook from office, ruling she can stay on the job while her challenge to the firing plays out in court.
In a 5-4 vote, the high court said Trump does not have the constitutional authority to fire a Fed governor without cause. While the landmark ruling limits a president’s authority over the central bank, a majority of the justices
separately ruled
Trump has free rein to fire agency heads at will.
