US authorities have dismantled a sophisticated operation by China's intelligence services, which used 13 fake consulting websites to lure Americans with security clearances into revealing sensitive government information. Employing AI-generated profiles and deceptive job offers, the scheme aimed to exploit individuals for foreign intelligence interests. The FBI and DOJ have seized these domains, issuing a stern warning against such tactics.

FBI Seizes 13 Sites Tied to China's Covert Effort to Hire US Officials
The FBI has
seized
13 websites that China allegedly used to help it secretly hire US government persons to get them to give up classified and sensitive information.
The Justice Department seized the web domains through court-issued warrants in an effort to crack down on a state-sponsored spying effort. The sites were dressed up as fake consultancy companies, and even a nonprofit, while denying any ties to a foreign government. But in reality, the goal was to hire former and current US government employees and military members, and trick them into writing paid reports divulging classified secrets to China, federal investigators say.
“These domain seizures offer a glimpse at how foreign actors can use promises of easy money to lure Americans into revealing sensitive or classified information that they are duty‑bound to protect,” says US Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg.

Thirteen internet domains used to target U.S. persons, including current and former security clearance holders with access to classified and sensitive U.S. government information, were seized today by federal authorities.
“These domain seizures offer a glimpse at how foreign actors can use promises of easy money to lure Americans into revealing sensitive or classified information that they are duty‑bound to protect,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg. “Anyone approached online with offers of easy income for vague ‘consulting’ work should treat those overtures with extreme caution and remain vigilant for warning signs of malicious targeting.”
