PMK Anbumani Ramadoss Opposes Karnataka Mekedatu Dam Project Seeks ...
Chennai, May 22 (PTI) PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday urged the Centre not to accept the detailed project report prepared by Karnataka for the proposed Mekedatu dam.
In a statement, he said, "The Tamil Nadu government should press the central government to revoke the 2018 permission that allowed preparation of the draft project report for construction of the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery without the State's approval." Referring to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Sivakumar's remarks, Anbumai said the claim that Tamil Nadu has no right to oppose the Karnataka government’s plan to build the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery river is "condemnable".
He also disputed Shivakumar's assertion that the DPR has already been submitted and the project would be taken up immediately after approval.
According to him, the Cauvery river serves as an irrigation source for 14 districts and provides drinking water to five crore people across 30 districts including Chennai.
"If the Mekedatu dam is built across the Cauvery, agriculture in those 14 districts and the drinking-water supply for five crore people will be af…

Flagging off the march, Anbumani described the project as a grave threat to Tamil Nadu's water security, agriculture and ecology, and urged the State government to strengthen its legal efforts to prevent the dam from becoming a reality.
Addressing reporters, he said the primary objective of the campaign was to mobilise public opinion across the Cauvery delta and other river-dependent regions against the proposed reservoir.
He alleged that Karnataka's plan would adversely affect the flow of Cauvery waters into Tamil Nadu, jeopardising irrigation, drinking water supply and the livelihoods of millions of people.
Calling the Cauvery the lifeline of Tamil Nadu, Anbumani said more than five crore people in the State depend directly or indirectly on the river for agriculture, industry and domestic consumption.

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday strongly opposed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly’s resolution seeking a tribunal to resolve the Mekedatu dam issue, warning that such a move would compromise the state’s established legal rights and favour Karnataka.
Terming the proposal “unnecessary and counterproductive,” the PMK leader, in a statement, urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to remove the clause demanding a new tribunal from the House resolution before forwarding it to the Union Government.
“Farmers’ organisations opposed the demand for a separate tribunal in the Government resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to resolve the crisis arising from Karnataka’s attempts to build the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery River”, he said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has formally urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reject the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by Karnataka for the Mekedatu reservoir project on the Cauvery river, underscoring significant legal and environmental concerns.
In a letter dated 26 May, Vijay expressed surprise that the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Central Water Commission (CWC) were entertaining Karnataka’s proposal without adequately considering Tamil Nadu’s objections.
The Mekedatu project, according to the Tamil Nadu CM, blatantly violates the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) as well as the Supreme Court judgment dated 16 February 2018. Vijay emphasised that these legal decisions have been painstakingly implemented over the last few years following a long legal battle spanning about three decades.
The Mekedatu reservoir is not among the projects permitted by the tribunal, and since the Cauvery basin has already been classified as a deficit basin with its water allocations fully exhausted, there is “no scope for additional utilisation or for creating a huge storage reservo…

The Coordination Committee of the Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Association has alleged that survey work linked to the proposed Mekedatu reservoir project is underway in Karnataka and urged the Tamil Nadu government to initiate contempt proceedings against the neighbouring state.
Speaking to TNM after visiting the proposed project site near Kanakapura in Karnataka, the association’s president PR Pandian alleged that markings and other developments at the site indicated that survey work for the project had begun despite the legal and statutory processes governing it.
“The Tamil Nadu government should file a contempt petition against the illegal construction of the Mekedatu dam. We demand that legal action be initiated against the Karnataka government’s action,” he said.
“As per the Supreme Court's directions, the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is responsible for managing the issues, and no government has the authority to proceed with the project on its own,” Pandian told TNM.

CHENNAI:AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday slammed the TVK-led government for allegedly adopting a "passive stance" towards the Karnataka government’s "aggressive efforts" to construct a dam across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu.
The Cauvery River serves as the primary drinking water source for the people of 20 districts in Tamil Nadu and is the vital lifeline for agriculture across ten districts, including the Delta region, Palaniswami said in a release from his party's headquarters.
"Following legal struggles, the continuous initiatives taken by the Jayalalithaa government under my leadership culminated in the Supreme Court delivering its final verdict on February 16, 2018", he said, adding "subsequently, on June 1, 2018, the Central Government notified the implementation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) in the central gazette."
Palaniswami clarified that the designated powers of these regulatory bodies are explicitly restricted to storing, distributing, regulating, and controlling Cauvery water, alongside supervising da…

Tamil Nadu CM urges Centre to reject Karnataka's Mekedatu project
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister asked the Centre to ensure Karnataka does not undertake any new Cauvery projects without obtaining consent from co-basin states.
C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday expressed surprise over the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Central Water Commission (CWC) entertaining Karnataka’s proposal for the Mekedatu project, without considering Tamil Nadu’s plea.
He requested Narendra Modi to instruct officials concerned to reject the DPR prepared by Karnataka, as it contravened the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and also the Supreme Court judgment.
Also, PM Modi should advise the Karnataka government not to take up any new project without getting the concurrence of co-basin states and not to violate the apex court judgment, he said.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Vijay said the announcement for the ‘Bhoomi Puja’ of the Mekedatu reservoir across Cauvery river and utterances of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar have caused a lot of concern among the lakhs of farmers of Tamil Nadu, who depend on the Cauvery for their livelihood.

CHENNAI:PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday launched a public awareness march from Biligundlu in Dharmapuri district to Poompuhar, demanding that the Karnataka government abandon the proposed Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery River. Addressing reporters before the start of the rally, Anbumani warned that the project would severely affect Tamil Nadu's water security, agriculture, and environment, and urged the State government to intensify its legal battle against the dam.
Speaking to reporters before flagging off the march, the PMK leader said the primary objective of the campaign was to prevent Karnataka from constructing the dam across the Cauvery River. He alleged that the project would be detrimental to Tamil Nadu's water resources, agriculture, and ecological balance.
Describing the Cauvery as Tamil Nadu's lifeline, Anbumani said more than five crore people in Tamil Nadu depend on the river directly or indirectly. Reject Karnataka's Mekedatu DPR, Vijay writes to Narendra Modi
Tamil Nadu chief minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Union Jal Shakti Ministry and the Central Water Commission to reject Karnataka’s draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Mekedatu reservoir on the Cauvery river, saying the move violates the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final award and the Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment.
The Mekedatu proposal has again brought into focus the long-running Cauvery dispute involving Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry over river-water sharing. With legal and political fronts active, the matter is likely to return to central agencies and the courts as the states press opposing positions.
In his letter, Vijay said Karnataka’s announcement of a ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ and public statements by Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar had caused “a lot of concern” among thousands of Tamil Nadu farmers who depend on Cauvery water. He warned that creating a new large storage reservoir is impermissible because the Cauvery basin is a deficit basin and available water at 50% dependability has already been allocated to the pa…

TVK Sacrificed Tamil Nadu's Mekedatu Stand For Congress Support ...
Chennai, Jun 4 (PTI) Tamil Nadu BJP slammed the ruling TVK on Thursday for allegedly mortgaging the state's rights on the Mekedatu dam project issue by offering the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state to the grand old party.
To cover up the internal factional fights within the Congress party, Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is deliberately and systematically igniting the Mekedatu issue, creating unnecessary tensions between the two states, BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said.
"Despite knowing this, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has not condemned the Karnataka Congress government till date. This is a massive betrayal committed against Tamil Nadu," he added.
Instead of severing ties with the Congress party that has announced to build a dam at Mekedatu that would affect Tamil Nadu, the TVK handing over a Rajya Sabha seat to the grand old party clearly exposed the obsession of Vijay, who is desperate to cling to power with Congress’s support, the BJP leader said.
"It is utterly shameful to have pledged the rights of Tamils and the sentiments of Tamils to the Congress party," Thirup…

Karnataka CM D.K. Shivakumar Open to Dialogue with TN on Mekedatu Project
Karnataka's Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar expresses willingness to engage in direct talks with Tamil Nadu's M.K. Stalin over the controversial Mekedatu balancing reservoir, hoping to resolve the long-standing Cauvery river water dispute.
You know, some disputes just seem to linger, becoming almost synonymous with the regions themselves. The long-running tussle between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery river water is definitely one of those. But lately, there's been a flicker of hope, or at least a renewed willingness to talk, which is always a positive step, isn't it?
Just recently, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, made it quite clear…

Mekedatu dam rises between 'friends' Cong and DMK - The Indian Express
Barely 10 days after Karnataka’s Congress government took over at a ceremony that was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, the two state governments, run by parties that are southern allies against the BJP, clashed this week over a project to supply drinking water to Bengaluru.
What has happened?
After Karnataka Deputy Chief MinisterD K Shivakumar expressed the resolve to build a damand reservoir on the Cauvery at Mekedatu close to the state’s border withTamil Nadu, DMK general secretary Durai Murugan issued a sharp response — pointing out that the Mekedatu project was not part of the awards of theCauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT)or the ruling of the Supreme Court.
Any unauthorised construction across the river could harm Tamil Nadu and violate both the 2007 final order of the CWDT and the 2018 verdict of the SC, Durai Murugan, who is water resources minister for the state, said.
The main opposition in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK, has warned of protests if Karnataka proceeds with the construction of the contentious dam project. AIADMK general secretary K Palaniswami criticised Shivakumar’s remarks.…

Amid the continuing dispute over the Mekedatu project, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday urged the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to direct Karnataka to release 9.91 tmcft of water at Biligundulu in June, in accordance with the Supreme Court order.
The request was made during the 51st meeting of the CWMA held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of SK Haldar. TN Water Resources Department additional chief secretary Satyabrata Sahu participated in the meeting through video conference from the secretariat in Chennai
During the meeting, Sahu said the storage level in the Mettur dam stood at 40.742 tmcft as on May 25. He added that 1,003 cusecs of water was being released from the dam for drinking water supply, industrial purposes and environmental flow.
He further stated that Tamil Nadu had received 329.166 tmcft of water at Biligundulu, including surplus flow, between June 1, 2025 and May 24, 2026, against its allocated share of 176.685 tmcft for the current irrigation year.
Referring to this, Karnataka’s representative argued that the surplus water released by Karnataka should also be tak…

TN CM seeks Modi's intervention on Mekedatu issue - Devdiscourse
The Tamil Nadu government Monday sought the Centre's 'urgent' intervention on the Mekedatu reservoir issue, saying Karnataka seeking environmental clearance for the project was in violation of an award of the Cauvery Water disputes tribunal and a Supreme Court judgment. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister K Palaniswami requested him to direct the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to "reject outright" Karnataka's proposal.
Palaniswami sought Modi's "urgent personal intervention" to deny permission to the proposal of Karnataka's Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Niyamita seeking environmental clearance for the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir and Drinking water project. The neighbouring state seeking such clearance was in "utter violation" of the final order of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal and a judgment of the apex court in February 2018, he said.
Palaniswami said the Tamil Nadu government has been conveying its strong objections and been urging the Centre to reject outright and return the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Mekedatu project. The proposed project was not in confor…

Farmers, PMK urge TN govt to convene meet on Mekedatu
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee and the PMK on Sunday urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to immediately take political and legal steps to prevent Karnataka from expediting steps for building a dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. The steps should include convening a meeting of the farmers associations as well as political parties to discuss the next course of action.
P R Pandian, president, TN Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee, on Sunday said that Karnataka has carried out visible preparations for the proposed Mekedatu dam project, including survey works, besides embedding iron rods in the rocky riverbed to demarcate the proposed construction site.
Explaining what he witnessed at the proposed site in Karnataka’s Kanakapura region, Pandian told TNIE that a new flight of stairs has been constructed to provide access from the foothill road to the riverbed, around 150ft below at the site chosen for building the dam. Pandian said that in 2024 itself, Karnataka farmers opposed the Mekedatu dam since it would affect irrigation in another part of the state, but the present go…

He also requested the Centre to advise the Karnataka government not to undertake any new project in the Cauvery basin without obtaining the concurrence of the co-basin states and not to violate the Supreme Court judgment in any manner.

EPS urges TVK government to secure Tamil Nadu's Cauvery water share
Chennai, Jul 9 (PTI) AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday urged the ruling TVK to immediately secure Tamil Nadu's share of Cauvery water due for June and July, warning the state government against remaining idle while Karnataka "plays with the lives of TN people." Launching a scathing attack on neighbouring Karnataka over the Cauvery water issue, the former chief minister said in a strongly worded statement that Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay should issue a firm political warning to the Congress government.
"Is CM Vijay ready to warn the Karnataka Congress government that if Karnataka does not immediately release Cauvery water, then the Congress minister will be dropped from the Tamil Nadu Cabinet," the AIADMK chief asked.
He condemned the Congress government and accused it of being "arrogant, power-hungry, dictatorial, and intent on disrupting brotherhood." He said Karnataka consistently ignored multiple verdicts of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court that upheld Tamil Nadu’s rights on Cauvery water.
The AIADMK chief said the farmers in the Cauvery Delta districts depended on Ca…

Take call after consulting all parties: Left, VCK - DT Next
CHENNAI:Left parties and VCK on Monday urged the State government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the next course of action after the Supreme Court dismissed Tamil Nadu’s review petition against the proposed Mekedatu dam project in Karnataka.
In separate statements, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam and CPI state secretary M Veerapandian stressed the need for a united political and legal response to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rights over the Cauvery waters.
Thirumavalavan said the Cauvery issue was a Statewide and emotionally sensitive matter concerning the people of Tamil Nadu and, therefore, all stakeholders should be consulted before any decision is taken. He said the State government’s stance should evolve after discussions with all parties represented in the Assembly.
He pointed out that the three-judge Bench headed by the Chief Justice had only dismissed Tamil Nadu’s review petition and that the Supreme Court’s November 2025 order had consequently come into force.
According to him, the Supreme Court had not granted permission for the construction of the Mekedatu dam, but h…

Chennai, June 11 (PTI) AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday slammed the TVK-led government for allegedly adopting a “passive stance” towards the Karnataka government’s “aggressive efforts” to construct a dam across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu.
The Cauvery River serves as the primary drinking water source for the people of 20 districts in Tamil Nadu and is the vital lifeline for agriculture across ten districts, including the Delta region, Palaniswami said in a release from his party’s headquarters.
“Following legal struggles, the continuous initiatives taken by the Jayalalithaa government under my leadership culminated in the Supreme Court delivering its final verdict on February 16, 2018”, he said, adding “subsequently, on June 1, 2018, the Central Government notified the implementation of the Cauvery Water Management Auth…

TN CM Vijay urges PM Modi to reject Karnataka's Mekedatu project DPR
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, May 26, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Central Water Commission (CWC) to reject Karnataka’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Mekedatu reservoir project across the Cauvery river, alleging that it violated the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and the Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay expressed concern over the Centre entertaining Karnataka’s proposal without considering Tamil Nadu’s objections. He also sought directions to the Karnataka government not to undertake any new project in the Cauvery basin without obtaining the concurrence of co-basin states.
The chief minister said the proposed Mekedatu project and recent statements made by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had caused anxiety among farmers in Tamil Nadu who depend on Cauvery waters for irrigation and livelihood.
Referring to the long-standing Cauvery water dispute, Vijay said the issue had been resolved after decades of legal proceedings and that the Supreme Court judgment dated Fe…
