IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Although the cheers are still ringing in the Americans’ ears after their impressive World Cup-opening victory, this U.S. team says it’s prepared for the physical and mental challenges of the weeks ahead — including what’s likely to be a physical meeting with Australia on Friday.
Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter gives credit for this tenacity to coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has taken over a team that repeatedly flopped on the international stage and infused it with a stronger mentality grounded in a few core beliefs.
“I think one is that we’re American. We don’t take s—-,” Berhalter said Tuesday.
“I think that’s something that (Pochettino) really put in,” Berhalter continued. “Even though he’s Argentinian, he has that mindset of, like, ‘Look, this is what we do, and this is who we are, and this is what America is about.’ So I think he just, you know,…

“So I think he just, you know, even from an outside perspective, he showed us Americans what we’re about. He really drilled that into us, and I think that’s something that has helped us this last cycle.”

'That makes them very dangerous': Pochettino's warning ... - WAtoday
Seattle:US coach Mauricio Pochettino says he envies the belief his Australian counterpart Tony Popovic has instilled in the Socceroos and has warned his players that they must match them physically if they are to win their World Cup clash in Seattle.
After a week of American eyes focused on star winger Christian Pulisic’s left calf, Pochettino also said his captain was no certainty to be fit for the match at Lumen Field where the winner will book themselves a spot in the knockout stage of the tournament.
Speaking at the pre-game media conference, the Argentine said Australia was a team of “good players, good organisation, good coach”. He said the US would look to play in a way that brought them success against Paraguay by putting pressure on the Socceroos. But he said he was also wary of how strong Australia were on the counter-attack in their 2-0 win over a “difficult” Turkey side.
Most importantly, he said, was that his side emulate in Seattle what the Socceroos displayed in that opening win.
“The most important thing is how we need to match the … mentality, that mindset that makes them very dangerous,” Poc…

Socceroos v USA, World Cup 2026 news: Mauricio Pochettino
SEATTLE –If Mike Grella has given this game an inflammatory build-up, Mauricio Pochettino has done the exact opposite, praising the Socceroos while warning his US Men’s National Team has to match Australia’s “mentality” to win the contest.
Speaking in Seattle on Thursday (Friday AEST) Pochettino admitted that the side’s friendly match in October was the catalyst he needed as a new coach to give his side the “wake up call” he needed, to show them the “right way to do things”.
Much of that came down to the physicality they failed to meet Tony Popovic’s side with in a 2-1 win in Denver, where Australia took a first-half lead through Jordy Bos. Pochettino smiled when asked if it was true that he gave a half-time team talk that involved a few home truths.
He also said his side will know where the line is tomorrow; but in a physical battle, will go as close to the edge as they can possibly go.
Whether that includes Christian Pulisic remains to be seen, with the US superstar still uncertain to play as he nurses a calf injury that is a day-to-day proposition.

IRVINE, Calif. — Going into halftime the last time the United States played Australia, head coach Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t happy. And he let his players know.
Pochettino screamed. Slapped his hands together. Lambasted the group, not for the performance but for a lack of fight. For being bullied by a physical Australian team, in a game which star forward Christian Pulisic was forced to exit in the first half with an injury following several heavy challenges, and not punching back.

“’We’re American, we don’t take s—.’ That’s something he really drilled into us,” midfielder Sebastian Berhalter said on Tuesday. “Even though he’s Argentinian, he has that mindset. This is what we do, this is who we are and this is what America is about.”
The United States and Australia will renew that rivalry on Friday (3 p.m. ET in Seattle) with a top-of-the-group clash in Group D. The U.S. and Australia impr…
