Sailors on a drifting Russian warship fired several warning shots at a British-registered yacht in the English Channel to “prevent a possible collision”, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
The incident involving the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich and a 12-metre-long sailing yacht called the Bright Future happened about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside the UK’s territorial waters.
There were no injuries and the yacht was not damaged.
An MoD spokesperson said: “Following attempts to contact a British vessel in the Channel, the Grigorovich fired warning shots.
“These were not aimed at the vessel and were an attempt to prevent a possible collision.”
The warship had been drifting rather than being manoeuvred under power, it is understood.

A Russian warship was observed carrying out a supply operation off the Essex coast.
The Admiral Grigorovich, a frigate monitored by the Royal Navy, conducted a "raft-up" with the Amur-class supply ship PM-82 close to the Galloper Wind Farm, near Harwich, as it travelled through UK waters.
The operation, identified by HMS Tyne, took place during a three-month period of heightened Russian naval activity in the region, during which UK forces kept an "unbroken watch" on Russian warships and support vessels.
A spokesman said: "Royal Navy warships and helicopters have maintained an unbroken watch on Russian frigates and their accompanying
vessels in UK waters for nearly three months
– and that vigil continues today.

The British couple whose yacht faced warning shots from a Russian warship in the Channel have accused the Ministry of Defence of trying to “close down” their story.
In an incident described by the Prime Minister as “reckless” but not “sinister”, sailors on the frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired several warning shots near the yacht Bright Future, crewed by Jane and Alan Kelvey on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said its assessment is that the shots were intended as a warning after the yacht came too close to the frigate and had come after the warship’s crew had attempted to contact the Kelveys by radio.
But speaking to the Telegraph on Wednesday, Mr Kelvey disputed this version of events.

LONDON (AP) — A Russian warship fired warning shots at a U.K.-registered pleasure yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday, authorities said, an incident that caused no damage but illustrated heightened tensions between the two countries.
Britain's Defense Ministry said it was investigating an “incident” after the yacht reported being fired on by a Russian navy vessel about 20 nautical miles (23 miles, 37 kilometers) south of the Isle of Wight, outside U.K. territorial waters.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to the sailing yacht, which continued its journey from the U.K. toward France.
The BBC reported that the yacht, which has no motor, had drifted toward the Russian vessel in foggy conditions.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich tried to contact the yacht when it was seen sailing on a “dangerous course in close proximity with the warship.” It said the ship's crew launched flares and issued sound signals when the yacht did not respond.
“After the distance had closed to 150 meters (500 feet), the frigate’s commander decided to fire warning shots across …

A Russian warship Tuesday fired a few warning shots at a UK-flagged yacht in the English Channel,CNNreported. The incident took place 32 kilometers south of the Isle of Wight, outside UK territorial waters.
The high-end civilian watercraft did not report any damage or injury and is continuing its journey further.
The Russian defence ministry said that the yacht appeared to be moving on a collision course. In a statement, the ministry described that the crew of a Russian military ship saw the yacht Bright Future and identified that it was. “on a dangerous course” that could soon lead it into “proximity” of the warship.
They tried to contact the yacht’s crew using radio signals, but those remained unanswered as the vessel continued on the same route.
When the yacht was just 150 metres away from the warship, the Russian crew resorted to signal flares to attract its attention. The Russian commander “decided to open warning fire along the vessel’s course using the ship’s small arms”, the Russian defence ministry said. Following this, the yacht changed its course.

A Russian warship is believed to have fired a warning shot at a British yacht in the English Channel - a potentially huge escalation in Putin's aggression towards the UK.
The Ministry of Defence is investigating the claim by the yacht's crew.
If true, the move had huge potential consequences if any Brits had been harmed or killed.
The incident, at around 11.40am on Tuesday, is understood to have involved the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich in the sea between the Isle of Wight and Normandy.
Russia's defence ministry said the yacht was called 'Bright Future', and accused its captain of 'following a dangerous course', adding that it was just 150m (492ft). The UK registered yacht's crew, meanwhile, claimed the Russian warship fired shots at a distance of approximately 500 yards (457 metres).
The owners of the yacht - 68-year-old Jane Kelvey and her 70-year-old husband Alan Kelvey - told The i paper that the Russian vessel fir…

He said: “The MoD are saying they got us on the radio. Our radio, we were right next to it. It…

Sir Keir Starmer said it was “reckless” for a Russian warship to fire warning shots near a yacht in the English Channel, but stressed that there was no sign it was anything “more si…

A Russian frigate has fired warning shots at a British-flagged civilian yacht in the English Channel, in the most direct military confrontation between Russia and the UK in home waters in recent memory. The incident follows the Royal Navy’s seizure of a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the same waters just days earlier.
The British yacht reported coming into close proximity with RFS Admiral Grigorovich, a Krivak III-class frigate, before warning shots were fired. The incident is understood to have taken place in the sea between the Isle of Wight and Normandy. No injuries or damage were reported, and a seaboat from one of the attending RN vessels visited the yacht to check on its occupants and gather details.
The RN says the OPVs HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne were showing the frigate west of Brest at the time of the tanker seizure that took place 25 miles south of the Isle of Wight on Sunday night. It appears they were also close by at the time of the incident involving the yacht. The ships were monitoring a vessel that has now been a persistent presence in British waters for some weeks, As we have previously reported, …

The incident, which reportedly occurred at around 11:40 BST, happened as a civilian yacht sailed near the warship
Admiral Grigorovich
, operating in international waters approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight.
Coming just days after the UK conducted its
first boarding of a vessel alleged to belong to Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’
, the
Admiral Grigorovich
is suspected to have been tasked by the Russian Navy to
escort these ships
as they pass close to NATO countries on their routes. Though yet to directly intervene in a boarding attempt, the frigate’s presence would undoubtedly provide a level of deterrence against plans to seize Russian-linked cargo ships.
BBC News
understands that, although the two incident are close in timing, the UK Government at present does not view this new event as related to the boarding of the
Smyrtos
on Jun. 14, 2026.

The commanding officer of the Admiral Grigorovich took the decision because the Bright Future was “proceeding under engine power on a dangerous collision course toward the warship,” in the English Channel, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Several attempts to make radio contact had failed, and when the yacht did not respond, the statement said, “signal flares were fired and sound signals were issued” in an attempt to attract the Bright Future’s attention.
But when the yacht still didn’t change course and the distance between the two vessels had closed to less than 500 feet, the commanding officer “decided to fire w…

A Russian warship in the English Channel fired warning shots several hundred yards in front of UK-flagged yacht that appeared to be sailing on a collision course with it on Tuesday, according to Russia’s defense ministry.
The yacht did not report any injuries or damage and is continuing its journey.
The ministry statement said the crew of a Russian frigate saw the civilian yacht, Bright Future, and said it was “on a dangerous course” that would bring it into “close proximity” with the warship.
After several unanswered attempts to contact the yacht’s crew via radio, the vessel stayed its course and the Russian crew launched signal flares to get the vessel’s attention, according to the defense ministry.
The Russian ministry said that the sailboat continued its “…

The incident was reported earlier Tuesday, outside U.K. territorial waters.
A Russian Navy vessel fired warning shots at a U.K.-registered yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday, the Russian military confirmed, saying the civilian boat was making a "dangerous approach" toward the warship.
The incident was reported midday Tuesday about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside U.K. territorial waters.
The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich detected the U.K. yacht "proceeding under engine power on a dangerous course that would bring it into close proximity with the warship," the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The Russian defense ministry said the frigate's crew attempted to make radio contact with the yacht, launched signal flares and emitted sound signals, but the boat "continued its dangerous approach."
When the two vessels were about 150 meters apart, the frigate's commander fired warning shots "from small arms across the yacht's course," at which point the yacht immediately changed course away from the warship, the Russian defense ministry said.

The decision by a Russian warship to fire warning shots near a British yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday was "reckless", UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Wednesday.
The Russian ministry said that the sailboat continued its “dangerous approach” and once it was close to 150 meters away, the Russian frigate commander “decided to open warning fire along the vessel’s course using the ship’s small arms.” The yacht then changed course away from the Russian ship, the ministry…

russia's Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the crew of the Admiral Grigorovich frigate fired warning shots in the direction of the British-flagged Bright Future yacht during an incident in the English Channel on June 16, claiming the civilian vessel was on a dangerous course toward the warship.
According to the кussian military, the encounter occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. local time while the frigate was transiting the channel. Russian officials stated that the yacht, operating under engine power, was approaching the warship and allegedly failed to respond to repeated radio calls made on international maritime frequencies.
The ministry said the frigate's crew attempted several measures to attract the yacht's attention, including radio communications, sound signals, and the launch of signal flares. Moscow claims the vessel neither altered course nor responded to requests from the warship as the distance between the two vessels continued to decrease.
Russian officials reported that when the separation narrowed to approximately 150 meters, the frigate's commander ordered warning shots to be fired…

LONDON (AP) — A Russian warship fired warning shots near a U.K.-registered pleasure yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday, authorities said, an incident that caused no damage but illustrated heightened tensions between the two countries.
Britain’s Defense Ministry launched an investigation after the yacht reported being fired on by a Russian navy vessel about 20 nautical miles (23 miles, 37 kilometers) south of the Isle of Wight, outside U.K. territorial waters.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to the sailing yacht, which continued its journey from the U.K. toward France.
The BBC reported that the yacht, which has no motor, had drifted toward the Russian vessel in foggy conditions.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich tried to contact the yacht when it was seen sailing on a “dangerous course in close proximity with the warship.” It said the ship’s crew launched flares and issued sound signals when the yacht did not respond.
“After the distance had closed to 150 mete…
