The 1 VIII doesn’t look much like any Xperia that’s come before.

The Xperia 1 VIII marks an attempt at a step change for Sony’s flagship phone line. Not only has it had an aesthetic overhaul, but Sony has also revamped the camera system, dropping the continuous optical zoom telephoto that’s defined the

.
It’s not all different. Sony staples like a 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot remain, and a few specific design touches, like a thick front bezel that fits stereo speakers, have stayed intact. Sony’s ambitious pricing hasn’t changed either: The Xperia 1 VIII isn’t launching in the US, but in the UK and Europe, it starts from £1,399 / €1,499 (about $1,850), rising to £1,849 / €1,999 ($2,450) if you want 1TB of storage.

I have a long-standinglove-hate relationship with Sony’s Xperia range, which has all too often left me in two minds about the series. On the one hand, it is arguably thebest high-end multimedia phonemoney can buy, packing Hi-Res audio over wired and wireless connections, unmatched video playback options, and still supporting microSD storage for massive on-device media libraries. In a market obsessed with removing features, Sony continues to build phones for enthusiasts who actually care about media.
But the Xperia lineup has also spent years struggling with the fundamentals. Charging has been slow, thermals inconsistent, and battery life merely decent rather than class-leading. The cameras, despite Sony’s Alpha branding, have often felt undercooked compared to rival flagships. Sony wants Xperia to be the ultimate creator flagship, but it still feels like one built primarily for Sony diehards.
That tension remains with the new Sony Xperia 1 VIII. While Sony has made some smart upgrades, I’m not convinced the company is …

Sony had many of its mobile phone fans kind of worried for a hot minute there after itannounceda joint venture with TCL at the beginning of this year, which will effectively relinquish control over the Bravia TV brand. Thankfully, the Japanese giantcame in shortlyto confirm that there is "no change in status" for Xperia phones. So, exactly one year after the launch of the Xperia 1 VII, we now get Xperia 1 VIII (with the Roman numeral spelled as Mark 8).
The new Xperia 1 VIII is still unmistakably a Sony phone with all the quirks that entail, but it has gone through one of the most major redesigns in a while. You are still looking at a "tall and skinny" chocolate bar-style device with an undisturbed display on the front, void of any punch hole.
Just to be clear, though, Sony isn't back to its 21:1 cinematic display aspect or anything. It is a 19.5:9 display, but the phone still looks a lot taller than wider, mostly due to the top bezel and display chin, which are no longer common design elements in 2026.
A lot has changed around back, namely the totally redesigned new camera island. It's a radical new look with a slop…
