Wyndham Clark holds on at Shinnecock to win 2nd U.S. Open title
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. -- A year ago,Wyndham Clarkhad to apologize for smashing Oakmont Country Club's 121-year-old lockers after he missed the cut in the U.S. Open.
Clark didn't leave any dents at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island this week, but he certainly left his mark as he captured his second U.S. Open title Sunday after nearly squandering a six-stroke lead in the final round before holding on for a one-stroke victory.
Clark, who became the ninth wire-to-wire winner of the U.S. Open with a closing round of 3-over 73, saw his lead shrink to only one stroke in Sunday's final round. But afterSam Burnsnarrowly missed birdie putts on Nos. 17 and 18 ahead of him, Clark took control again.
After hitting his tee shot on the par-5 16th into tall native grass down the left side, Clark rebounded with another incredible recovery shot. He blasted his ball out of the tall grass and back into the fairway. Then, he hit his third shot to 24½ feet and made a birdie putt to extend his lead to two.
On the par-3 17th, however, Clark hit his tee shot to 69 feet. He left his first putt 6 feet short and then missed the ensuing p…

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — The USGA set up a different golf course at Shinnecock Hills to keep it playable in strong wind. And when the wind subsided late Thursday afternoon, Wyndham Clark looked like he was playing a different U.S. Open.
Clark seized on a more gentle course — slightly calmer and still soft with receptive greens — by pulling away late to reach 6-under par through 16 holes.

Wyndham Clark builds 4-shot lead before U.S. Open play suspended
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. -- Whatever dreadWyndham Clarkfelt when he saw the tee times and the forecast for the U.S. Open gave way to hope Thursday, and he still hadn't even arrived at Shinnecock Hills.
Morning fog led to a two-hour delay, and Clark had a feeling his late afternoon start would be an advantage as the wind began to subside with the setting sun. Good golf was still required, and Clark displayed every bit of that before he was stopped only by darkness.
By then, the former U.S. Open champion rode a birdie-birdie-eagle stretch to a 6 under par through 16 holes and a four-shot lead.
"Everything was kind of clicking," said Clark, who came into the U.S. Open playing as well as anyone. "We were definitely fortunate with the wind laying down. Overall a good round."
The USGA set up a different golf course at Shinnecock Hills -- slower, more receptive greens and reasonable pin positions -- to keep it playable in strong wind. But when the wind subsided late in the day, Clark looked as if he were playing in a different U.S. Open.

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) — Wyndham Clark made an eagle and two birdies in three holes to seize a four-stroke lead when darkness halted Thursday’s first round of the 126th US Open at blustery Shinnecock.
The 32-year-old American started on the back nine and answered a bogey at the par-three second hole with back-to-back birdies at three and four, the latter from 22 feet, and sank a three-foot eagle putt at the par-five fifth to reach six-under par.
Clark, the 2023 US Open champion who says he’s seeking redemption after smashing a locker at Oakmont after missing the cut at last year’s championship, parred six after a 61-foot chip to within inches of the hole then parred the seventh before play was halted.
“It was a nice start for sure,” Clark said. “It was a tough day. It was tough for everybody, I think. Biggest thing for me, I stayed patient. Didn’t have my best stuff, but I made a lot of putts and saved myself to keep the momentum going.”
“Happy with where I’m at for sure.”

Wyndham Clark didn't just win the 2026 U.S. Open. He completed one of golf's most impressive comeback stories.
Three years after capturing his first major championship at the U.S. Open in Los Angeles, Clark returned to the winner's circle Sunday at Shinnecock Hills, securing his second career major title and reminding the golf world why he was once considered one of the sport's brightest stars.
For Clark, the victory represented much more than another trophy. It marked the culmination of a journey that included career highs, personal struggles, public criticism and questions about whether he could ever return to championship form.
Now those questions have been answered.
Clark's rise to stardom seemed unstoppable after his breakthrough 2023 season. That year, he earned his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship before shocking the golf world by winning the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. He followed that with a Ryder Cup appearance and climbed as high as No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
But the momentum didn't last.

Aussie golfers hit 67-year US Open low as Clark surges
Australia's golfers have suffered an inglorious wipe-out, as Wyndham Clark remained firmly on course to capture a second U.S Open crown in three years.
As Clark surged to a four-shot halfway lead, no Australians made the cut for the first time since 1959, after Cameron Smith, Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert and milestone-man Adam Scott all floundered at beastly Shinnecock Hills.
There were no such troubles for Clark, as the 2023 champion apologised for an infamous locker-room meltdown after seizing command on a marathon day for the runaway leader.
"Had an awesome day yesterday. Came out today and wasn't as good, but I really fought. Our group was playing great yesterday and today, and we really fed off each other."

Wyndham Clark Survives Shinnecock Hills to Win Second U.S. Open Title
Wyndham Clark Survives Shinnecock Hills to Win Second U.S. Open Title
There is no such thing as a safe lead at a major championship. It didn’t matter that
Wyndham Clark
started with a six-shot lead on Sunday. It was whether he would have it when the day ended.
When the day ended, he had a one-shot lead. That’s all that mattered.
Clark
, the former OSU star who played three seasons for the Cowboys before he transferred to Oregon for his final collegiate season, dropped a par on his final hole to secure the U.S. Open championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. He finished 4-under after a final round 73, his first over-par round of the event.
In doing so,
Clark
became the first professional who played collegiately for OSU to win multiple career majors. He also became the 24th player in history to win the U.S. Open at least twice. He won the 2023 title at
Los Angeles Country Club
. He was also the 10th player in the last 100 years to win two U.S. Opens in a four-year span.
His lead dwindled, but it never disappeared, as the sun set on Long Island.
