ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday urged all sides to exercise restraint and give diplomacy a chance as renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran threaten months of international efforts to secure a negotiated settlement and prevent a wider Middle East conflict.
The appeal comes after a fresh escalation involving US military action against Iranian targets and subsequent Iranian strikes against US-linked facilities in the region, developments that have heightened concerns about regional stability, global energy supplies and the future of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Pakistan has played a prominent role in mediation efforts since the conflict erupted earlier this year, maintaining contacts with both Washington and Tehran and supporting negotiations aimed at easing tensions and addressing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and other issues.
Addressing a United Nations Security Council briefing on non-proliferation, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed Islamabad’s support for a diplomatic solution.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has called on all parties involved in the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize regional peace. This development comes amid a renewed escalation following the collapse of the US-Iran ceasefire, with recent military actions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was intended to facilitate dialogue, is now in jeopardy. Despite the heightened tensions, Pakistan expressed its readiness to continue its role in diplomatic efforts.

The call from Pakistan appears to be a diplomatic gesture aimed at renewing dialogue between the involved parties. The situation remains volatile with military actions continuing to disrupt any potential negotiations. Market participants are closely watching these developments, as they could impact the likelihood of renewed peace talks.

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing strong support for ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Speaking to reporters, Merz thanked Pakistan for mediating the agreement and stressed that the immediate goal should be to negotiate a long-term cessation of hostilities. “This can only be achieved by diplomacy,” hesaid.
Merz highlighted that the talks aim to protect civilians in Iran, ensure regional security, and potentially prevent a global energy crisis. “The German government supports these diplomatic efforts and is in close dialogue with the US and other partners,” he added.
The chancellor also affirmed Germany’s commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as part of its contribution to regional stability.

In a meeting with Pakistani Army chief Asim Munir on Thursday in Tehran, Qalibaf reiterated that developing comprehensive relations with neighboring countries is a stable and decisive policy of the Islamic Republic.
“This policy holds particular importance with our friendly and brotherly country, Pakistan, due to the deep bonds between our two nations and the aligned policies of our governments,” he said.
Qalibaf emphasized that the Islamic Republic seeks genuine, comprehensive peace for Iran and the entire region.
“I hope those who started the war and are now desperately seeking to stop it will truly end their past distrust-building behaviors through their actions and deeds,” he added.
While underlining Iran’s determination to achieve complete peace and security, Qalibaf noted that “the other side always prevents the results of these efforts with its breach of commitment.”
