Sunday night on the South Lawn of the White House saw two very distinct types of action: combat happening inside the cage, and corporate politicking happening outside of it.
Inside the
UFC
octagon, mixed martial artists jabbed and kicked each other, resulting in spectacular knockouts from the likes of Sean O’Malley and Justin Gaethje.
Just outside the cage, however, President Trump held post, where a stream of tech titans, media moguls and other power players sought a few minutes of his time (and perhaps to wish him a happy 80th birthday).
The Hollywood Reporter
was in attendance for the proceedings, a highbrow-lowbrow merger of capitalism, politics and U.S. government assets unlike anything ever seen before.
The event was UFC Freedom 250, a $60 million
made-for-TV spectacle
sparked by a suggestion from Trump and executed by his friend, the UFC CEO Dana White. White and Trump sat cage-side, directly next to WME executive chairman and TKO CEO Ari Emanuel, whom Trump immediately greeted when he took…

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg sat ringside, as did Trump’s ally David Ellison, the Paramount Skydance chief executive.

Sorry, but Trump's White House UFC cage fight was actually really good
Sorry, but Trump's White House UFC cage fight was actually really good
I was ready for the seven-fight UFC Freedom 250 extravaganza that took place on the White House South Lawn to be monstrosity, overshadowed by Trump and his hangers on. And when one of the fighters, Josh Hokit, emerged from the ring, and shouted to the audience “Michelle Obama is a man”, it looked as if that was about to happen.
That particular lie has become a favourite among online MAGA trolls, and Hokit was perhaps making it as a statement of allegiance to the Trump cause. It didn’t go down well. After the bout, Dana White, the boss of UFC, criticised Hokit, calling his comment about the former first lady “nasty”.
In another unfortunate incident, messages between a UFC commentator and Eric Trump came to light, in which the president’s son asked “Are any of the fights tomorrow rigged?” Eric was later forced to deny accusations that he was trying to cheat the betting markets.
The event was accompanied by a strong element of farce, as is perhaps usual for Trump. It was held on Flag Day, and was meant to be an early celebration of America’s 250th birthday. It just so happened to coincide with the president’s 80th…

The Ultimate Fighting Championship match kicked off Sunday evening on the grounds of the White House, with the mixed martial arts fight series taking place on the South Lawn under a full-scale UFC Octagon.
The event, called "UFC Freedom 250," is billed as a celebration of America's 250th anniversary -- and it coincides with President Donald Trump's 80th birthday.
Trump exited the White House side-by-side with UFC president and longtime ally, Dana White. The two walked from the Oval Office along the colonnade before appearing on the Truman Balcony.
There, the announcer welcomed Trump, saying, "Welcome to UFC Freedom 250, here is the President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump."
While standing on the balcony, someone in the crowd shouted, "happy birthday!" which was met with applause.
The Zac Brown Band, along with the Armed Forces Joint Chorus, sang the National Anthem. A military jet flyover occurred towards the end of the anthem.

Donald Trump's 80th birthday bash at UFC Freedom 250 ended inside the octagon on theWhite House's South Lawn, where the newest octogenarian and his family congratulated winnerJustin Gaethje.
Only moments earlier, the exuberant American fighter did a backflip off the cage before shaking hands with the President, who wore a white 'USA' cap for the evening's final event.
Gaethje, carrying an American flag, thanked military members and said that the country also faced long odds 250 years ago after his bloodied battle with Georgian-Spaniard Ilia Topuria in the co-main event ended around 1am ET.
Then, it was Trump's turn to enter the spotlight. The President made his own way into the cage alongside First Lady Melania as pyrotechnics sparkled from the legs of the structure above, dubbed 'the Claw'.
Dazzling fireworks lit up the sky above the White House in red, white and blue as chants of 'USA' rang out from the crowd to toast Gaethje's victory.

The UFC cage fight scheduled for June 14 at the White House has generated discussion and debate from online influencers and cultural critics alike. The commentary generally falls into two major schools of thought:
The first: It’s largely a benign entertainment spectacle.
This view is most famously articulated by Joe Rogan, the popular podcaster and longtime UFC enthusiast and announcer. After initially raising concerns about the outdoor heat and safety of the fighters, he’s pivoted to fully supporting the unprecedented program as a uniquely Trumpian media event.
“There’s no more American thing than having a UFC fight on the White House lawn,” Rogan said. “It’s so American. It’s so Trump. It’s so crazy. You know what I mean? A UFC fight on the White House lawn is bananas.”

It was a bloody night on the White House South Lawn, one capped by President
Donald Trump
and his family entering the ring of a makeshift mixed martial arts arena to congratulate a new lightweight champion as fireworks burst overhead.
After months of hype, Trump sat ringside June 14 on his birthday for one of the most unusual events in White House history, watching fighters trade blows late into the night.
The first bout at the Ultimate Fighting Championship Freedom 250 event ended with a technical knockout. More knockouts followed. Victorious fighters jumped over the Octagon fence to shake the president’s hand. One proposed to his girlfriend. Several ended the night bloodied. The event didn’t wrap up until after 1 a.m., with Trump donning a white “USA” hat and staying to the end.
The UFC event was timed to the

U.S. President
Donald Trump
is set to transform the South Lawn of the
White House
into a mixed martial arts arena, hosting a night of cage fighting on June 14. The event, coinciding with his 80th birthday, is billed as part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
This seven-bout Ultimate Fighting Championship spectacle, named "
UFC
Freedom 250," will blend high-octane sport with political pageantry. It highlights President Trump's long-standing affinity for the league, whose leaders and many supporters have been vocal backers for more than a decade.
Why UFC?
Donald Trump's alliance with the UFC began in the early 2000s, when he hosted events at his now-bankrupt Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, as other venues spurned the sport. UFC CEO
Dana White
told Fox News in 2018 that Trump "gave us our start when nobody would talk to us."
White became a close ally, using the sport's popularity, particularly with younger male fans, to support Trump's campaigns dating back to his first run in 2016. In 2019, Trump became the first president in office to attend a UFC match. His appearances have becom…

It was 2001, and mixed martial arts fighting was on the ropes.

And the new owners of

“When UFC started, people were like, 'Oh my God, this is disgusting and horrible. Oh my God, this is brutal,’”

In came Donald Trump. Long a fan of boxing and often seen ringside in Vegas, he agreed to showcase UFC matches at his Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City. It was the opening White said he needed when few others would touch it.
“Trump was the first guy to give us a shot,” White said.

The structure, known as "The Claw," for the upcoming UFC fight that US President Donald Trump will host as part of the 250th anniversary of the United States is seen on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, on June 12, 2026.
Almost a year ago, at a rally in Des Moines, President Trump made an announcement to his supporters.
"We're going to have a UFC fight – think of this – on the grounds of the White House," he said.
The crowd of supporters didn't cheer, exactly – rather, a murmur ran through the crowd. They seemed, if anything, surprised.
And now, he's following through, allowing the UFC to erect an arena on the South Lawn. Seven cage fights will be held on the White House grounds in honor of the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary – a day that also happens to be the president's 80th birthday.
Beyond that, he's undertaken a roster of other side projects not - strictly spe…
