US-Bolivia agreement to fight drugs after nearly 20 years
US-Bolivia agreement to fight drugs after nearly 20 years
June 17, 2026 04:30
The United States will provide training and equipment to Bolivian law enforcement agencies as part of the fight against drug trafficking, under a bilateral agreement, the first of its kind signed by the governments of the two countries in nearly two decades, the US embassy in La Paz said on Tuesday.
In 2008, Evo Morales, then president of Bolivia, the world's third-largest cocaine producer, severed diplomatic relations with the US and expelled the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) from the country.
But the current center-right president, Rodrigo Paz, has dramatically changed the country's foreign policy after two decades of socialist rule, seeking rapprochement with the United States and international financial institutions.
"The United States will work closely with the Bolivian government," providing "training, equipment, and other support" to investigate and disrupt drug trafficking networks, prosecute economic crimes, and increase transparency in the Andean country's police and judicial systems, the U.S. embassy in La Paz said in a statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia has reported this Monday the signing of a new cooperation framework with the United States, endowed with more than 17 million euros, aimed at reinforcing actions against drug trafficking and organized crime networks.
"Bolivia and the United States have signed a Letter of Agreement that will allow channeling up to 20 million dollars (about 17.3 million euros) in technical cooperation, training, and equipment to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime," the ministry announced on social networks.
For now, US authorities have not officially commented on this understanding. The announcement comes after, at the beginning of the month, the 'Shield of the Americas' coalition -- a security initiative promoted by the Administration of Donald Trump -- expressed its support for the Executive of Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia, alluding to alleged "dirty money coming from drug trafficking and transnational crime" that would be behind the financing of protests and road blockades against Paz.
