Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced on Tuesday his decision to lead a new government being formed after a ruling coalition was established.
"I wish to inform you that I confirm my determination to take responsibility for the formation of the new government and to serve as prime minister," Sinkevičius said on social media, adding that the country needed unity.
He will replace Inga Ruginienė, who has led the government since last autumn after Gintautas Paluckas' resignation amid a graft probe.
Sinkevičius was elected chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party in May.
He said the government will primarily focus on reducing the burden of rising prices and living costs, addressing social inequality and poverty, fostering economic growth, improving job quality and ensuring healthcare accessibility.

The parliament approved the candidacy of Social Democrat Inga Ruginiene for the position of prime minister after Lithuania's ruling Social Democrats (LSDP) struck a deal on Monday to form a new coalition government with two partners.
Formally, Ruginiene will become prime minister when the President Gitanas Nauseda issues a decree and she is sworn in the parliament.
LSDP signed the agreement on forming the new coalition government with the Nemunas Dawn political party and the Lithuanian Farmers, Green and Christian Families Union parliamentary group.
The new ruling coalition will hold 82 of 141 parliamentary seats, with the Social Democrats retaining the largest share with 52 members.

VILNIUS, June 16 (Reuters) - Lithuania's ruling Social Democrat party said on Tuesday that its chair Mindaugas Sinkevicius plans to become prime minister, replacing Inga Ruginiene of the same party who held the position since last year.
"Mindaugas Sinkevicius is ready to assume full responsibility for the formation of the new Government and serve as Prime Minister", Lithuania's Social Democrat Party said in a Facebook social post on Tuesday.
The Social Democrat party earlier this month voted to remove the populist Nemunas Dawn, whose leader was sentenced for antisemitism, from the coalition government.
