History-making moment awaits Socceroos or Pharaohs - ESPN
DALLAS, Texas - It's a special thing to make history, to do something nobody has ever done before. There's a type of immortality that comes with it, the knowledge that no matter how many people follow, you'll always be remembered for being the first. In blazing a trail, you've ostensibly made it easier to follow, perhaps not practically, in a footballing context, but certainly on an emotional level. And it should go without saying that, especially through the prism ofAustralia's clash withEgyptin the round of 32, you'll have given a gift of untold joy to the millions (or hundreds of millions, in the latter's case) back home.
Either the Socceroos or the Pharaohs will achieve something they've never done before in their history come Friday, both heading to Dallas, Texas, searching for their first-ever win in the knockout stages of theFIFA World Cup. Australia has twice been here before, losing toItalyin the round of 16 in 2006 and then falling toArgentinaat the same hurdle in 2022. Egypt, for their part, were technically in the round of 16 back in 1934 -- the first ever African side to play at a World Cup -- but only 16 team…

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — In a historic moment for Egypt, Mohamed Salah scored a dramatic, 67th-minute go-ahead goal to help deliver his country a come-from-behind 3-1 win and a first World Cup victory in its footballing history.
New Zealand took the lead thanks to an athletic Finn Surman header early in the first half. At the same time, Egypt looked dreadful going forward while New Zealand’s energy was contagious.

But the script flipped in the second half as Egypt pushed forward in a dramatic way. Two goals in nine minutes gave them a lead they would not relinquish. One more goal late on was enough to send the thousands of ecstatic Egyptian fans in Vancouver into raptures — and Egypt to the top of Group G on four points.

The king without a crown: Mohamed Salah's quest for global recognition

There was once an Egyptian king who ruled on the banks of the River Mersey. For nine years, Liverpool’s faithful sang his name as Mohamed Salah cemented his place among the club’s greatest players.

Back home, however, Salah never wore a crown. He carried something heavier — the hopes of a nation that had spent decades searching for a place among football’s elite.

On Friday, in the Texas city of Dallas, those hopes will accompany Egypt into unfamiliar territory. For the first time in their history, the Pharaohs will play a FIFA World Cup knockout match, with the man who conquered Anfield now attempting to add another defining chapter to a career that has already transformed Egyptian football.
