AVirginiateacher vanished while preparing for a multi-day hike in Peru, and now his family is begging for answers to bring him home safely.
Ian Thomas Treger, 29, was supposed to have completed his hike to Choquequirao Archeological Park around May 20, but his family grew worried after they couldn't get in contact with him.
At first, his mother, Michelle Ludwig, thought her son might have been struggling to reach out because of poor cell service in the Andes, she toldThe News-Gazette.
She also thought he might have decided to visit the famous Machu Picchu archeological site in Peru, Ludwig mentioned.
'I wasn't too worried because he changes his plans a lot,' she said, adding that her beloved son is an Eagle Scout who is very familiar with the outdoors.
According to hisInstagramprofile, he is also very well-traveled, with his last post showing him in Ecuador on April 16.

LEXINGTON, Va. (

/Gray News) - A family is continuing to look for answers as to where their loved one is following his disappearance while on a trip to Peru.
Ian Treger, 29, was last heard from on May 13 in the Cusco region of Peru, where he planned to go hiking.
According to family friend Donna Welch, who has known Treger and his family for more than 30 years, he arrived in Peru on May 11 and was expected to return to the U.S. after a 10-day trip.
“We lost total contact with Ian on May 13 at around 11 a.m.,” Welch said.
According to Welch, Treger has spent years teaching English in Latin America and loves traveling and hiking, so a trip like this is not out of the ordinary.
However, she said staying in contact with family has always been important to him, making his disappearance especially concerning.
When Treger did not return home as planned, loved ones contacted authorities.
Welch said investigators have struggled to determine exactly which hiking trail Treger took, as there are several. She said surveillance footage only shows him leaving t…

Context:
A 29-year-old Virginia English teacher, Ian Treger, vanished in Peru after arriving on May 11 for a 10-day trip and being last seen leaving an Airbnb to hike near Cusco on May 13. Peruvian police and local search teams, including helicopters and High Mountain Rescue Units, have scoured multiple high-risk trails, but Treger’s phone has repeatedly gone offline, hindering geolocation efforts. Authorities have narrowed potential sites to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain and Choquequirao, while family members have fundraised for private searches and shared trail maps highlighting dangerous terrain. Treger’s mother has traveled to Peru to assist with the search, and the U.S. Embassy is coordinating with Peruvian authorities as officials recover his laptop in hopes of locating him. The case underscores the challenges of locating a hiker in remote Andean terrain and suggests ongoing, multi-channel search efforts with no definitive resolution yet.

A Virginia man disappeared while trekking through Peru’s historic Andes Mountains and has not made contact for more than a month, prompting what his family describes as an extensive search across the unforgiving landscape.
Ian Treger, 29, of Lexington, Va., was last in touch with relatives on May 13 while traveling in Cusco, Peru, his mother, Michelle Ludwig, wrote in a GoFundMe post.
Treger had entered the South American country on May 11 for what was planned as a 10-day visit, staying at an Airbnb between demanding hikes on “high-risk” mountain trails, family friend Donna Welch told WDBJ.
Welch said surveillance video last captured Treger as he was leaving the Airbnb.
Treger, who teaches English in Latin America, was officially listed as missing in a report issued by the Peruvian National Police on June 2.
Searchers have so far been unable to locate him, in part because authorities do not know which of the area’s many trails he may have taken, the outlet reported.

A 29-year-old English teacher fromVirginiawas found dead after setting off to climb Nevado Ausangate – the fifth highest mountain in Peru – about a month ago.
Ian Thomas Treger was an avid hiker who has climbed some of the most demanding trails all over the world.
His mother, Michelle Ludwig, told the Daily Mail that her son left hisAirBnBon May 13. When she hadn't heard from him nearly two weeks later, she alerted local authorities.
An emotional Ludwig told the Daily Mail on Wednesday that her beloved son's remains were found not too far from the hiking trail he had planned to conquer.
'A shepherd who works the fields with his alpacas found my son yesterday,' Ludwig said.
'The police told us it was a hiking accident and that he was by himself. I don't understand how this could've happened. He was a very capable hiker and is used to high-altitude trails.'
Authorities with the High Mountain Police in Peru said a decomposed body with blond hair and clothing similar to ones that belonged …
