Spain's race for infinite solar power « Euro Weekly News
Spain's race for infinite solar power « Euro Weekly News ByTarek Salame• Updated: 15 Jun 2025 • 17:51 • 3 minutes read Spain is scaling up solar fast — but the next challenge is making it last. Credit: mrganso from pixabay via Canva.com Spain is chasing something bigger; it’s not only expanding solar energy, but also aiming for a future where energy is never depleted, following the unexpected blackout that affected every part of the country in April 2025. In just a few months, Spain has green lit more than 65 GW of solar projects that launched new hydrogen and battery storage pilots in order to increase its backing of global fusion research. It wants a grid that can generate, store, and sustain energy without import gaps or guesswork. For Spain, which is already a leader in solar energy, the blackout was the push it needed to build a system without limits. Back in 2021, Spain had just over35 GWof solar capacity. Now? It’s closing in on66 GW, with new projects being approved at a pace few expected just four years ago. Solar panels alone won’t power the country around the …

Renewables shield Spain from energy crisis as gas sets electricity ... Frompv magazine Spain The rapid expansion of photovoltaic and wind power in Spain in recent years is proving to be more than a decarbonization tool. Amid surging international gas prices driven by geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, the Spanish power system has shown increased resilience to fossil-fuel volatility. According to an analysis by British consultancy Ember, the rising share of renewable generation has significantly reduced the influence of gas on electricity price formation, enabling Spanish households to save an estimated €10 ($11.5) per month on electricity bills. The study concludes that Spain has largely decoupled electricity prices from gas market fluctuations, driven by a renewable expansion that began before the 2021–2024 energy crisis and was later accelerated through additional wind and solar capacity, as well as energy storage deployment. The transformation of the Spanish power system is evident in the declining role of combined-cycle gas plants in setting the marginal electricity price. In 2021, before the latest phase of renewable build-out, gas set po…

Renewables shield Spanish power bills by €10 a month as gas prices ...
Renewables shield Spanish power bills by €10 a month as gas prices ... London, 16 June 2026 –New Ember analysis finds that Spanish households have saved €10 per month for electricity since the start of the current energy crisis in March thanks to renewables installed since 2021. These avoided costs are due to renewables growth reducing the influence of gas on power prices. Gas is typically the most expensive source of electricity, and raises electricity prices in any hour it is used for power. In Spain, the influence of gas on power pricing has fallen to only 9% of hours since the beginning of 2026, down from 52% of hours in 2021. This is thanks mainly to the growth of wind and solar generation, which grew by 37% from 2021 to 2025. “Wind and solar growth are acting as a shield against the price impacts of global instability,” says Chris Rosslowe, author of the report. “While gas prices spike, renewables are keeping power bills down for Spanish households and businesses.” Other countries still reliant on gas power are more exposed to price impacts as the EU’s wholesale gas prices are elevated 60% compared to before the start of the US-Israel war with Iran. In more gas-dependen…

Lessons from Spain's Renewable Energy Grid and the 2025 Blackout | Blog ... Lessons from Spain’s Renewable Energy Grid and the 2025 Blackout Case Study Energy Updated: July 15 2025 Article Summary Introduction: Spain’s Ambitious Renewable Energy Shift and the 2025 Crisis Spain has long been at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution. With abundant sunshine and wind across its diverse geography, the country has aggressively pursued solar and wind installations since the early 2010s. By 2024, Spain had become a global leader in renewable energy generation, with over 60% of its electricity coming from clean sources. Encouraged by EU climate goals and public support, Spain set its sights on achieving near-total decarbonization of its grid by 2030. However, the unexpected blackout in May 2025 exposed critical vulnerabilities in the nation’s electricity infrastructure. For nearly 48 hours, large parts of the country experienced rolling outages. Public transit halted, digital services failed, and hospitals were forced to rely on diesel generators. What was initially viewed as a technical glitch soon became a wake-up call: the clean energy transition must be supported by resilien…

Facts and lessons learned from the Iberian blackout - Rabobank
Facts and lessons learned from the Iberian blackout - Rabobank The Iberian blackout on April 28, 2025, has sparked a heated debate about its root causes and consequences, with discussions often shaped by competing perspectives. In this article, we first explain the basics of electricity grid transport, providing a foundation to analyze the facts and some of the opinions surrounding this unprecedented event. We then compare the Iberian situation with the circumstances in the Netherlands, highlighting key similarities and differences. Finally, we offer our perspective on the potential changes that must be made in the energy sector based on the lessons learned from the blackout. An electricity system consists of three main components: electricity generation (power plants, wind farms, solar PV, etc.), load (industry, households, exports, etc.), and a power grid that transports electricity and connects the two (see figure 1). These components must operate together seamlessly to ensure reliable electricity delivery. Electricity system operation is highly complex. Electricity production and consumption must continuously match, transmission must stay within grid limits, and voltage and…
