Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro on Tuesday for coercion
SAO PAULO --Brazil's Supreme Court convicted former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro on Tuesday for coercion related to the trial that last year sentenced his father and ex-President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 yearsin prison for a coup attempt.
The court sentenced him to four years and two months in prison. All five justices considering the case agreed he illegally interfered by lobbying the U.S. government to threaten Brazilian officials to stop the trial.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also oversaw the former president's coup attempt case, said Eduardo Bolsonaro's job as a federal lawmaker “is not to lobby overseas against his own country.” De Moraes and his wife were sanctioned by the U.S. government in July last year.
Lawyers for Eduardo Bolsonaro disputed the verdict, saying there was not enough evidence to convict him. The former lawmaker has lived in Texas since February 2025.
U.S. President Donald Trump slapped Brazil with a 50% tariff last year in protest ofJair Bolsonaro's prosecution for trying to overturn his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.

BRASILIA, June 16 - A panel of Brazil's Supreme Court voted on Tuesday to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, of courting U.S. interference in his father's coup plot trial last year.
The panel's four justices each backed the conviction. They were expected to discuss the sentence later on Tuesday.
The office of Brazil's Prosecutor General had charged Eduardo Bolsonaro with courting U.S. authorities to help his father's case by imposing sanctions on the court's justices and tariffs on Brazilian goods. Both the tariffs and the sanctions were later scaled.
The younger Bolsonaro, a former lawmaker, moved to the United States in 2025, months before the trial that convicted the right-wing ex-president of plotting a coup. In the U.S., he has been active building support, especially from the Trump administration, for his father.

How Brazil Tried and Convicted Jair Bolsonaro - TIME
On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Brazil
convicted Jair Bolsonaro
, the former president, for attempting a coup to hold onto power after losing elections in October 2022, and sentenced him to prison for 27 years and three months. The trial and the conviction of Bolsonaro and several members of his inner circle—mostly former military officers like him—is the first time a Brazilian president was convicted of a coup attempt.
The trial was accompanied by an aggressive campaign by President Donald Trump against Brazil to help Bolsonaro, a far-right populist and former Army captain, escape justice. The trial and prosecution of Bolsonaro became a test for the independence of Brazilian judiciary,
which did not buckle
under domestic or international political pressure.
More than 40 years have passed since Brazil's military dictatorship ended in 1985. The military regime passed an
Amnesty Law
in 1979, and Brazil has never prosecuted any of the military officials responsible for crimes committed during the regime—
kidnapping
,
torture
, and
murders
