George Russell claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after a confusing finish to qualifying when Max Verstappen crashed.
Verstappen spun into the barriers at high speed on the last runs in Q3 and caused yellow flags, which usually means other drivers cannot improve their lap time as they need to slow down through the accident zone.
However, Russell lifted off the throttle and still went fastest to beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to pole, then was cleared by the FIA for a yellow-flag infringement.
Footage showed only a single yellow flag was being waved when Russell went past Verstappen's crashed Red Bull, which changed to double yellow flags just before he reached the finish line to set his pole-setting time.

A wild end to Qualifying at the Red Bull Ring saw Max Verstappen crash out and George Russell take pole position.
Mercedes driver George Russell claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix with a last-gasp Qualifying effort that usurped Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, moments after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dramatically crashed out of Q3.
Drivers were attacking their second and final runs of the pole shootout when Verstappen lost control of his car through Turn 9 and slammed into the barriers, bringing out yellow flags and threatening to derail plenty of laps.
While Kimi Antonelli – who held provisional pole after the first Q3 runs – backed out and failed to improve, team mate Russell navigated the yellows (insisting afterwards that he had lifted) to go a couple of tenths quicker than Leclerc and Hamilton, who were ahead of Verstappen on track and also found time.
It leaves Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton and Antonelli as the provisional top four on the grid for Sunday’s race, ahead of Verstappen, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar, and the Racing Bul…

Formula 1 raced at the Red Bull Ring in Austria this past weekend while the region sweltered under a heat dome. It was a weekend of unmet expectations: After
such a strong performance in Barcelona
, pundits were ready to declare Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton a proper title contender. The red cars flattered to deceive at times, but the real challenge to Mercedes’ ongoing dominance came from a newly resurgent Red Bull and Max Verstappen, who reminded us why so many of the packed grandstands were all wearing orange.
The original Östereichring was
a spectacular thing
, with steep gradients, long straights, and high-speed curves, surrounded by views of the Styrian mountains. But racetrack designers in the late 1960s paid scant attention to safety features, and the corners were mostly lined with Armco fencing. The sport stopped racing there after the 1987 Grand Prix, judging it too dangerous for the speeds F1 cars were capable of at the time. It was rebuilt in the mid-’90s, losing around…

George Russell reignited his Formula 1 title challenge by converting pole position into victory at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, holding off a charging Max Verstappen to secure his second win of the 2026 season.
The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line 1.6 seconds ahead of the Red Bull driver after controlling much of the race at the Red Bull Ring. Team-mate Kimi Antonelli completed the podium to preserve his championship lead despite missing out on victory.
For Russell, it marked a timely breakthrough after a lean spell since winning the season-opening race in Melbourne. With Antonelli claiming five victories in the intervening rounds, the Briton desperately needed to respond, and he did so with a composed drive from lights to flag.

George Russell claimed pole position for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver produced a superb final lap of 1:06.113 to beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.236s just moments after Max Verstappen’s push for pole had ended in a spectacular crash.
In the closing moments of the top-10 shootout, Leclerc had briefly taken provisional pole, edging ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton as Ferrari delivered two strong final laps. Verstappen, quickest in the second sector, looked on course to challenge those times but pushing to make gains in Turn 9, the Dutchman lost control and slid off into the barriers at high speed. Russell was still on track and completed his final attempt to move decisively to the top of the order. Verstappen was unharmed, and Race Control later confirmed that Russell’s lap had been completed under single yellow flags, allowing the Mercedes driver’s time to stand.
Leclerc will start second, with Hamilton third after a best lap of 1:06.408. Kimi Antonelli completed a strong session for Mercedes in fourth, just 0…

Russell seals thrilling Austria victory from Verstappen
Mercedes' George Russell has returned to P2 in the Drivers' Championship standings after winning the Austrian Grand Prix.
George Russell has boosted his title bid by seizing victory in the Austrian Grand Prix, the Mercedes driver taking his seventh career win ahead of a chasing Max Verstappen and championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
Russell made a smooth getaway from pole position when the lights went out, while Verstappen also bounced back from the disappointment of his crash in Qualifying to make gains in the early laps. Antonelli did not have an entirely smooth start, the Italian running wide on several occasions.
While Russell held a solid lead for much of the following laps, Verstappen – after engaging in more than one feisty battle with Lewis Hamilton along the way – made his way up to P2 as the race progressed, resulting in the Dutchman putting increasing pressure on Russell later on.
A tense end to the Grand Prix followed as, after his final pit stop, Verstappen set about cutting into Russell’s lead – just as Antonelli was also trying to chase down the Dutchman from third. But Russell ultimately crossed the line by…
