JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A top Alaska election official on Monday ruled that a U.S. Senate candidate with the same name and party affiliation as Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan is ineligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot in August.
Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher, in a letter sent to the challenger Sullivan, said she concluded that his declaration of candidacy “was not filed in order to declare an actual good-faith candidacy for the office of United States Senator, but was instead filed with a purpose to confuse or mislead and to thereby compromise the ballot’s fairness or neutrality.”
The challenger can appeal the ruling, she said.
A message seeking comment from Sullivan, the challenger, was not immediately returned. In a social media post Sunday, he said he “met the qualification and I entered this race because I am unhappy with the 12 year record of the current Senator and I feel we need a change. It’s that simple.”

The Alaska Division of Elections issued a preliminary decision Thursday determining that Republican Dan J. Sullivan is not eligible to run for U.S. Senate against the incumbent, Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.
Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher informed the other Sullivan of his ineligibility after receiving two complaints about his candidacy, accordingto the Anchorage Daily News. The other Sullivan’s candidacy raised speculation that he was being put on the ballot to confuse voters into voting for the wrong Sullivan, which in turn would help former Democratic Alaska Rep.Mary Peltolawin the Senate race.
“Based on a review of the evidence presented and in the Division’s possession, the Division has determined that the preponderance of evidence does not support your eligibility for the office of United States Senator,” Beecher wrote.
The decision is not final, and Beecher gave Sullivan a chance to make his case by 5 p.m. Thursday, the Anchorage Daily News reported. The elections division will then make a final decis…

May 30, 2026 – Mary Peltola may have just handed Alaska voters the strongest argument yet for repealing ranked-choice voting and the open primary system.
A Democrat from Petersburg named Dan Sullivan has suddenly emerged as a candidate for the US Senate. Not Sen. Dan Sullivan, Alaska’s Republican incumbent. A different Dan Sullivan. A fraud.
On its face, that’s unusual enough. But the circumstances surrounding the launch raise eyebrows.
Just days after Mary Peltola, who is the leading Democrat candidate for US Senate, visited Petersburg, the Democrat with the exact same name as Alaska’s sitting US senator unveiled his campaign website and announced his candidacy. He’s now filed with the Division of Elections.
Then came another interesting detail: The metadata embedded in the campaign press release identifies the author as Amber Lee, a longtime Anchorage Democrat political strategist with deep ties to Democrat campaigns and Alaska’s political left.
Coincidence? Think again. If it was a coincidence, it is one that …

A man with the same name and party affiliation as Alaska Republican US Senator Dan Sullivan is eligible to challenge the senator in the August primary, a judge ruled on Friday.

WASHINGTON, June 27 (Reuters) – An Alaska judge has ruled that Dan J. Sullivan can join Republican U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan on the state’s August 18 primary ballot, overturning a state election official’s earlier decision to remove the challenger as an ineligible candidate.
The unelected Sullivan, a former U.S. Forest Service worker and retired teacher, was removed from the ballot last week by Carol Beecher, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, after Republican Party officials complained that his candidacy would mislead voters.
Republicans, including Senator Sullivan, have also accused Democrats of recruiting the challenger to cause confusion and aid Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola, a former U.S. representative.
In a late Friday ruling, Superior Court Judge Thomas Matthews said the decision to remove the challenger Sullivan had been undertaken on “good-faith criteria” that are not found in the Constitution or Alaska election laws. “Mr. Dan Sullivan is declared to be an eligible candidate,” the judge concluded.
Local media reports said Matthews’ ruling was expected to be appealed to the Alaska Supreme Court ahead of a Tuesday deadline for state electi…

Two Dan Sullivans are running for Senate in Alaska, and if their names aren’t confusing enough, you might want to take a look at their logos.
Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is an incumbent Republican who’s served in the U.S. Senate since 2015, while Dan J. Sullivan is a last-minute candidate who’s also running as a Republican. He entered the race just days before Alaska’s filing deadline.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan is running for reelection in Alaska and faces a field of 15 competitors. One of them is Dan Sullivan.
The senator told reporters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday that he thinks the appearance on the state's primary ballot of another Republican with the same name is a dirty political trick coordinated by Democrats and the campaign of his chief rival for the seat, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola. He threatened a lawsuit to get to the bottom of it.

June 6, 2026 – As Alaska election officials weigh complaints about a US Senate candidate sharing the same name as the state’s incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, a similar controversy unfolded in Washington state two years ago, where two gubernatorial candidates named Bob Ferguson withdrew from the race after allegations that they were recruited to purposefully confuse voters.
The parallel is striking.
In Alaska, a Petersburg resident named Dan Sullivan recently filed to run for the US Senate and even changed his voter registration to Republican. He has a history of donating to Democrats, including Senate candidate Mary Peltola. His candidacy places him on the same ballot as incumbent Republican US Sen. Dan Sullivan, who has represented Alaska in the Senate since 2015.
The filing prompted concerns from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which sent a letter to Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom and Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher, asking for additional safeguards to prevent voter…
