Each year, theWorld Cuphas had a few games that bring shocking results. Germany has been on the wrong side of that result for the last three World Cups now, including their latest Round of 32 loss to Paraguay on Monday.
Ever since hoisting the 2014 trophy in Brazil, Germany has yet to get past the first round of the knockouts. Before the 2026 tournament, they had been eliminated in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022. Now, their road to glory has ended early in the Round of 32 against Paraguay.
Here's what Germany's Round of 32 loss means for their 2026 World Cup dreams.

5 Takeaways From Paraguay's Upset Win vs. Germany In The Round Of 32
The 2026 FIFA World Cup turned in its first stunning knockout stage result as Paraguay defeated four-time champions Germany in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.
For the first time ever, Germany has been eliminated at the World Cup in a penalty shootout. For the second time ever, Paraguay has won a World Cup knockout game.
The biggest story in this game, of course, was just how well Paraguay defended over 120 minutes. With excellent commitment and communication, Paraguay's defense was near impenetrable. On the one occasion Germany found the back of the net, Paraguay did not get down and let the dam burst. It kept up its game plan and got into the shootout.
For Paraguay, it will likely need an even stronger defensive effort as France might be its next opponent (if Les Bleus get past Sweden). For Germany, it is soul-searching after a third straight World Cup disappointment.
Here are five takeaways from the match:

The painful new reality Germany face after disastrous World Cup exit
Finally, Uli Stielike has company. For 44 years, an outstanding player for Borussia Monchengladbach, Real Madrid and his country stood alone as the only German man to miss a penalty in a World Cup shootout. Then three came in a flurry: Kai Havertz with a tame attempt, Nick Woltemade with a still tamer one and Jonathan Tah with his wild, skied effort the most crucial of the three
before Jose Canale confirmed their fate.
The old stereotypes of Germany football, the Turniermannschaft with their menacing inexorableness, are being destroyed. An exit to Paraguay did not feel very German; but now a staple of the business end of tournaments have failed to make the last 16 of a third successive World Cup. Germany’s last victory in a knockout tie
remains the 2014 final.
Since then, they have lost, either over 90 minutes or on penalties, to Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Ecuador and Paraguay, each a result that would have seemed unGerman. There had been pessimism about this week from some in the German footballing world: but in anticipation of a last-16 defeat to France in Philadelphia. Instead, it is Paraguay who head to Penn…

Paraguay's shocking upset over Germany
in the round of 32 wasn't just one of the biggest upsets of the
2026 World Cup
, but one of the largest in knockout round history.
What happened at Gillette Stadium was a result not many people saw coming.
Paraguay
jumped out to an early lead and despite
Germany
tying the match and threatening a game-winner, it held off another score and emerged victorious in penalty kicks for its
first knockout round victory
since the 2010 World Cup.
There have been numerous upsets throughout World Cup history, but most of those happen in the group stage and ended up in ties. It's even more remarkable when elimination and advancing is on the line. So where does Paraguay's historic win rank?

Paraguay produced one of the greatest shocks in recent World Cup history by inflicting a first penalty shootout defeat at the tournament on four-time champions Germany.
Germany sit 31 places higher than Paraguay in FIFA’s world rankings, but lost a nail-biting sudden-death shootout 4-3.
The game went to extra time after Kai Havertz’s header cancelled out Julio Enciso’s surprise opener, with Jonathan Tah then seeing a header controversially ruled out by VAR.
Paraguay, who had never won a World Cup knockout match before, will now face either France or Sweden in Philadelphia on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.

At a World Cup of plucky performances and unlikely odds upended, Paraguay have produced a shock for the ages.
The South American underdogsheld Germany to a 1-1 drawafter extra time, then eliminated the four-time world champions on penalties on Monday.
The outcome may well be the greatest upset in World Cup history.
Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at what the result means to the two countries.
At the World Cup in 1998, Paraguay were clinging to a 0-0 draw in a last-16 meeting with hosts France in the hope of some penalty shootout magic from goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert, but a 114th-minute golden goal by Laurent Blanc dashed that strategy.
Twenty-eight years later, Paraguay pulled off what the Chilavert generation could not.
Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill saved the efforts of Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade before Jonathan Tah fired over the bar, and the way was paved for Jose Canale to blast home the decisive spot kick.
It was the first time Germany had lost a penalty shootout at the World Cup.
Gill has some history of his own as a penalty stopper. He saved two for his club side, San Lorenzo…

“Even if elimination hurts: what a game,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on social media, immediately following Germany’s defeat on penalties to Paraguay.
“With your commitment and team spirit at this World Cup,” Merz continued, “you have thrilled our country. We are proud of you.”
On Tuesday, the Chancellor’s office told German newspaper Tagesspiegel that the post was made in mistake — a case of “wrong tweet, wrong time, wrong button”. But it was still a misstep that jarred with the national mood.

Nobody is thrilled. Nobody is proud. In fact, nobody even seems particularly surprised at what, among stiff modern competition, might be the most humiliating moment in the country’s World Cup history.
Germany were eliminated at the group stage of the 2018 World Cup. It happened again in 2022. They avoided that same embarrassment at this tournament, but have tripped and fallen into a different one, exiting at the round of 32.
Was this actually worse? Arguably so.

The first major shock of the 2026 World Cup officially materialized as four-time champion Germany was eliminated in the round of 32 after a penalty shootout against a tenacious Paraguay.
Germany
dominated possession from the start, but it was Paraguay who crafted the most dangerous actions in the opening 45 minutes, breaking the deadlock with a nice action that Julio Enciso finalized with a header to stun the crowd at Gillette Stadium.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side was largely lackluster in the final third but managed to even the scoring when Florian Wirtz floated a perfect cross that Kai Havertz’s cleverly flicked into the bottom corner to give Germany life 54 minutes in.
Still, Germany continued to look incapable of finding a way through Paraguay’s compact defensive block, and the game remained level at one heading into the first extra-time of the
2026 World Cup
. Jonathan Tah thought he scored the winner for Germany, but the goal was disallowed for a controversial Waldemar Anton foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Die Mannschaft lacked the clarity to create a winning moment, and the clash headed to a pen…

Some sensational upsets in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. Germany came from behind against Paraguay but could only manage a 1–1 draw, before losing 3–4 on penalties. The Netherlands and Morocco also drew 1–1 after normal time, with the North African side making fewer mistakes in the penalty shoot-out to progress to the last 16.
Foxborough, Gillette Stadium. Germany are the clear favourites and take control of the game from the very first minutes, maintaining a constant presence in the opposition’s half. Paraguay, however, defend in an organised manner, avoiding excessive passing and biding their time for the right opportunity to strike.
The match really came to life towards the end of the first half. In the 42nd minute, on their first real attacking foray, Paraguay took the lead. Galarza sent a floated ball into the box after the German defence had cleared a corner, and Julio Enciso popped up behind the static defenders to head past Neuer.…

That made it a record 10 World Cup games in a row that Germany have conceded a goal.
