GAZA, (PIC)
With the launch of the 2026 World Cup competitions, the eyes of football fans around the world turn to the biggest and most followed sporting event, but the scene in the Gaza Strip looks completely different, where the repercussions of war, destruction, and displacement overshadow the atmosphere of football enthusiasm, turning the following of the tournament into a daily challenge facing thousands of young people and families.
Although football has long been an important outlet for the residents of the Strip, the exceptional circumstances imposed by the war have made following the World Cup matches extremely difficult, in light of the deteriorating economic conditions, the continuous power and communication outages, and the high costs of accessing sports broadcasting.
Decline of interest due to living conditions
Captain Mustafa Nofal, a football coach in Gaza, confirms that enthusiasm for the World Cup is still present among young people, but the difficult living conditions have imposed different priorities on citizens.
Nofal told the PIC reporter that the majority of fa…

GAZA/CAIRO, June 16 (Reuters) - Fadi Al-Arawi, a footballer in the Gaza Strip Premier League, hasn't been able to take the pitch since pro sports were suspended with the outbreak of war more than two years ago. Like most Gazans, he no longer even has a home where he can watch the World Cup on TV.
As Saturday's match between Qatar and Switzerland was about to get under way, he wore his old Gaza Sports Club professional uniform and medals he had picked up at international competitions.
He hovered in the darkness over a flickering laptop, trying to get an internet signal to watch the match with a group of friends in a room in a school converted into a shelter for Gazans displaced by Israel's military campaign.
"See, this is the internet, it's starting to cut out and the match hasn't even started yet," Al-Arawi, 38, told Reuters in Khan Younis as Israeli drones hummed overhead. "Can you hear the drones? We might live or die, we might be bombed."

Egypt fever sweeps Gaza as World Cup draws crowds
Egypt fever sweeps Gaza as World Cup draws crowds
As the 2026 Fifa World Cup captivates fans around the world, Palestinians across the Gaza Strip are gathering to watch the tournament despite the territory's ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Matches are being screened in public squares, cafes and restaurants.
All photos are taken by Mohammed al-Hajjar for Middle East Eye in the Nuseirat Camp in central Gaza.
With long power cuts and intense summer heat, especially in displacement camps, the screenings offer more than football.
They provide a rare chance to gather, socialise and enjoy a brief sense of normality.
As kick-off nears, fans pack the viewing areas, cheering on their favourite teams.
Egypt's national team has drawn some of the biggest crowds, reflecting the close cultural and historical ties many Palestinians feel with their neighbour.
For many, the World Cup offers a brief escape from daily hardship, after more than two years of Israeli genocide and siege.

World Cup Fever Meets War Reality in Gaza - DOP - Days of Palestine
DaysofPal —As the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, football fans across the globe are celebrating the world’s most-watched sporting event.
In the Gaza Strip, however, the excitement is overshadowed by the harsh realities of Israeli genocidal war, destruction, and mass displacement, turning what is usually a festive occasion into a daily struggle for thousands.
Football has long served as an emotional escape for Gaza’s residents, offering moments of unity and joy amid ongoing hardship.
But the ongoing conflict has made following the tournament increasingly difficult. Worsening economic conditions, frequent power outages, disrupted telecommunications, and the high cost of accessing sports broadcasts have all contributed to dampening the World Cup spirit.
Mustafa Nawfal, a football coach in Gaza, said that while enthusiasm for the tournament still exists among young people, the difficult living conditions have forced many families to shift their priorities.
“Most households are now focused on securing basic necessities such as food, water, and daily supplies,” Nawfal explained. “Watching matches or subscribing to …

A love of soccer runs deep in Arab cultures. More than entertainment, it's a language of identity, community and resistance. And for Palestinian-Americans in Philadelphia, this summer's FIFA Club World Cup offered a glimpse of what the sports world could look like as Lincoln Financial Field was transformed into an unexpected space for cultural celebration and political solidarity.
Adam Matari, a 29-year-old business owner, attended eight tournament games. "I never thought I would experience Philly hosting a Club World Cup in my lifetime," he said, noting that the tournament's timing coincided with heightened awareness about the situation in Palestine.
Matari’s involvement in the sport spans personal passion and professional expertise. Having grown up playing for his hometown team in Montville, New Jersey and Temple University’s club team, he later worked for FC Barcelona in operations and recruitment. "[Soccer] has been an expression of freedom and an escape fro…

UMM AL-KHAIR, West Bank (AP) —As the FIFA World Cupgets underway on June 11, with Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia among the Arab nations set to compete, soccer remains both a passion and a strugglefor many Palestiniansin the Israeli- occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian national team came agonizingly close to qualifying for the tournament but fell just short of reaching the 48-team field. Still, the World Cup will be closely watched in the West Bank, where, for many young Palestinians, the game offers both an escape from daily pressures and the realities that surround them.
In the Bedouin village of Umm al-Khair, in the Masafer Yatta region south of Hebron, children play on a small soccer pitch bordered by barbed wire erected by Israeli settlers from the nearby Carmel settlement. During a recent game, a ball kicked toward the goal landed beyond the fence asyoung settlerspassed by. The settlers took the ball away, ending the match.
Residents say such incidents are common. The community has lost dozens of soccer balls. Attempting to retrieve them can risk confrontation with settlers and, at times…

Almasirah:Friendly Football Match in Spain Becomes Show of Solidarity ...
Palestine’s first-ever football competition on European soil on Saturday, a symbolic milestone that came as the Israeli regime forces' genocide in the Gaza Strip continues despite the US-brokered peace deal, turned into a major show of solidarity with Palestinians against the Israeli regime.
The friendly match became a large-scale display of solidarity with Palestine, as around 50,000 fans filled the San Mames Stadium to watch a Basque selection face the Palestinian national team on the home ground of Athletic Bilbao.
The Palestinian football players' team, before the kick-off of the match, posed behind a banner that read "Stop the Genocide," directly linking the match to calls for an end to the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza since October 2023 and for Palestinians' right to live in peace and dignity.
Spectators waved Palestinian flags, held up banners backing Palestinian rights, and joined a march through the city before kick-off.
Palestinians inside the stadium chanted pro-Palestine slogans while raising Palestinian flags and unveiling images of Suleiman Al-Obeid, the former captain of Palestine's natio…
