Talk of war in the Middle East abounds on social media, but not just about the one with Iran. A small, but significant, portion of this chatter relates to a conflict that has not begun. For more than a year now, pundits and politicians have warned of a potential clash between Israel and Turkey. Driving this hypothetical confrontation are a series of issues related to Syria, the Palestinian territories, and regional security as a whole. In December 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indirectly charged Ankara with wanting to reestablish Ottoman imperial rule over the Levant. To that, he declared, Turks “should not even think about it.” Officials in President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Turkey have steered a more neutral course on the prospect of an Israeli contingency. On nightly television, however, commentators have not shied from the prospect of fighting of the Israel Defense Forces. Especially cavalier pundits have asserted that Turkish forces likely wouldseize Israel’s ca…

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned on April 9 that the international community should be prepared for possible Israeli moves that could undermine the fragile ceasefire and negotiation track taking shape around the U.S.-Iran file.
Speaking after talks in Ankara with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Fidan said the risk was not limited to battlefield escalation and cautioned that steps could be taken to derail diplomacy. "The world public opinion, in particular, must be prepared for Israel's possible sabotage moves and be in a position to deliver the necessary response," he said.
Fidan also argued that the ceasefire framework requires protection from disruption if it is to evolve into a more durable arrangement. He said the current truce may need to be extended and stressed that negotiations should begin in good faith, adding that the process should be implemented in a way that also includes Lebanon.
He sharpened his language on Israel's operation…

Statements from those close to the Turkish leadership escalated into threats of occupying Cyprus and half the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea amid developments in the
Eastern Mediterranean
and the broader geopolitical instability in the region.
At the core of the new provocative rhetoric is
İbrahim Karagül
, a journalist and former director of the pro-government newspaper Yeni Şafak, who is considered someone with close ties to the Turkish president’s circle.
In a social media post, Karagül issued a series of threats against Greece,

In the volatile chessboard of Middle Eastern geopolitics,
Turkey
under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emerged as one of
Israel
's most vocal antagonists. Once allies in the 1990s, their relationship has deteriorated into a toxic mix of fiery rhetoric, economic sanctions, and proxy maneuvering. But how much of a genuine threat does
Turkey
pose to Israel today?
As the Gaza conflict drags into its second year and regional alliances shift, the answer lies in a spectrum of diplomatic isolation, economic pressure, and indirect military risks, though a direct clash remains unlikely due to geographic distance,
NATO
constraints, and mutual deterrence.
The downward spiral accelerated after Hamas's October 7, 2023, attacks and Israel's subsequent
Gaza
offensive. Erdogan, positioning himself as a champion of the Palestinian cause, has unleashed a barrage of condemnations, labeling Israel a "terror state" and comparing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hitler. By mid-2025, this translated into concrete actions: Turkey fully suspended trade with Israel in Ma…

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Türkiye has intensified preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, and warned against actions that could undermine regional stability.
“We have intensified our preparations to ensure that the Ankara summit becomes a reference point in NATO’s history,” Erdogan said while addressing his Justice and Development (AK Party)’s parliamentary group meeting in the Turkish capital.
Erdogan said the announcement that US President Donald Trump would personally attend the NATO summit, scheduled for July 7-8, was “a valuable step in terms of the alliance’s cohesion.”
“Türkiye’s security begins not in Hatay, but in Aleppo, Damascus and Beirut. Neither will we tolerate any faits accompli in our brothers’ countries, nor will we turn a blind eye to aggression,” he said, stressing that the country’s security extends beyond its borders.
Erdogan also referred to the “delusion of the Promised Land,” saying Türkiye was fully aware of its ultimate objective. “By the will of God, we will never allow this,” he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday issued a strong warning regarding Israel’s military operations in the region, saying attacks on Syria and Lebanon have reached a level that directly threatens Türkiye’s security.
Speaking on Wednesday, Erdogan said Türkiye would continue to stand alongside neighboring countries and would not remain indifferent to developments affecting regional stability.
“Damascus and Beirut are brotherly cities to Istanbul,” Erdogan said. “We will not allow attacks against our brothers, and any aggression targeting Türkiye’s rights or the rights of Turkish Cypriots will face a very strong response.”

A minister in Turkey has spoken of one day “ruling” Jerusalem. Israeli officials have warned darkly that Turkey is “the new Iran”. Listen to the volleys of invective flying in both directions, and you might think that two of the Middle East’s pivotal powers are heading for conflict.
Thetension is real. Turkey, a mostly Muslim country, fumes over Israel’s ill-treatment of Palestinians. Israel accuses Turkey of harbouring leaders of Hamas, the Islamist group that attacked Israel on October 7th 2023. Each thinks the other threatens its borders. Israel has fostered ties with Kurds, including some that Turkey’s government, ever wary of Kurdish nationalism, sees as enemies. Turkey has close relations with the ex-jihadists now ruling Syria, who appear to be reformed but who Israel fears could one day prove hostile to the Jewish state.
Israel’s prime minister and Turkey’s president often swap ferocious insults. Binyamin Netanyahu recently called Recep Tayyip Erdogan an “antisemitic dictator” who is “committing genocide against the Kurds”. Then again, Mr Erdogan has likened the Israeli leader to Hitler, saying Israel is a ch…

Turkish PresidentRecep Tayyip Erdogancalled for Israel’s destruction over the weekend while accusing the Jewish state of perpetrating “genocidal policies” in the Middle East, sparking a war of words with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.
“We see what is happening in Palestine. May Allah destroy Zionist Israel in his holy name,” Erdogan said during a speech after visiting a mosque to commemorate the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“We must see what is happening there, and therefore, we must unite, be strong, and be brothers here. May Allah always strengthen our unity,” he continued in remarks reported by Turkish media.
Israelresumed its military operations against Hamasin Gaza earlier this month, saying the Palestinian terrorist group refused to release more Israeli hostages kidnapped during its October 2023 invasion of the Jewish state and rebuffed proposals to extend the ceasefire between them.
