Though gas prices remain
at four-year highs, oil prices are falling after President Donald Trump and Iranian officials
announced a deal to end the war in Iran
.
USA TODAY
reported
that
while oil prices have fallen following the announcement of the preliminary pact, the fate of the nation's nuclear program is left to "further talks." Trump indicated that the deal will reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the United States blockade of Iranian ports.
An official signing ceremony is planned for June 19 in Switzerland; additional details were not immediately disclosed. In a
June 14 social media post

The good news is that gas prices are down nearly 40 cents nationally from last month, but the pace of that decline has slowed, and President Trump has taken notice. Ahead of the holiday weekend. The president complained that prices at the pump were not dropping as fast as they should be. Part of the reason for that, according to Gas Buddies Patrick Dehaan, is continued violence in the Strait of Hormuz. The US and Iran are still sparring over management of the crucial oil. Gasoline, Diesel Prices Surge as Middle East Tensions Remain High
The nation’s average price of gasoline has risen 23.2 cents over the last week and stands at $3.68 per gallon, according to GasBuddy® data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The national average is up 80.0 cents from a month ago and is 66.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel rose 34.0 cents in the last week and stands at $4.951 per gallon.
“Consumers continue to feel the sting of rising oil, gasoline, and diesel costs as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain elevated, pushing gasoline prices to their highest levels in years while diesel could soon approach the $5-per-gallon mark nationally,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Until we see a meaningful resumption of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist. At the same time, seasonal forces are beginning to intensify as several regions complete the transition to summer gasoline, creating a double headwind that could continue driving pump prices higher in the …

Drivers around the U.S. have seen some modest relief at the pump lately as
gasoline prices
retreat toward $4 a gallon. But motorists shouldn't bank on fuel costs returning to where they were just before the
Iran war
anytime soon, according to experts.
Mark Zandi, chief economist at
Moody's Analytics, doesn't expect gas prices to drop below $3 this year absent a major economic shock, such as a recession.
"Under the most optimistic scenarios, I would expect gas prices to settle closer to $3.50 by year's end," he told CBS News in an email.
When the U.S. and Israel launched military strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, the national average price of gas was $2.98 a gallon. But the conflict has crippled oil shipments passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, pushing gas prices to a recent high of $4.17 a gallon on April 9.
Expect higher fuel prices for months
Fuel costs are
closely tied to oil prices
, which have been elevated since the Iran war started. And unfortunately for motorists, gas prices typically rise much faster after crude spikes than they recede when oil drops — a pattern known by economists a…

The national average gas price jumped by five cents overnight into Thursday to $3.84, according to AAA. Some states saw even sharper one-day increases: The average gas price in Florida jumped by 9 cents, in New Mexico by 12 cents and in Ohio by 17 cents.
"Everything is so volatile and gas prices are so unpredictable and reactive that they could continue going up," AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. "The national average remains $3.84 right now. We were paying that a week ago. Now, when this all began on February 28, the national average was $2.98. So we've come a long way since then, but it's just too early to know how long this will last."

After months of egregiously high gas prices, there is finally some hope on the horizon. On Thursday, gas prices fell slightly below $4 nationwide.
When I say slightly, I mean it in the fullest extent of the word,as the New York Times reportsthat the average price per gallon is $3.99 nationwide. While it’s undoubtedly good to see oil prices dropping, AAA notes that gas prices are still 34% higher than they were when the conflict with Iran started.
The monthslong conflict with Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a quarter of the global energy supply is shipped. This caused gas prices to spike almost immediately. In the days following the first strikes in Iran, I remember gas prices immediately surpassing $4 in my home state of Arizona, with prices eventually going as high as $4.99.
Gas prices had started to fall this week as the U.S. and Iran were signaling they were getting closer to signing a deal that would bring a permanent end to the conflict. Prices have sharply dropped from $4.56, this year’s peak. As of Friday morning, the average price per gallon in the United States fell to $3.999,
according motor club AAA data tracked by NBC News
.
Still, even at that level, prices are more than 34% higher than before the U.S. and Israel launched the war Feb. 28.
The drop in retail gas prices is thanks to tumbling oil prices, which have plunged 14% over the last five days as markets became more optimistic about peace with Iran. While oil is still more than 30% higher than it was before the war started, on Thursday it fell to its lowest levels since the conflict started.

A drop in oil prices has delivered welcome relief at the pump.
Drivers stung by highgas priceshave enjoyed some welcome relief over the last couple of weeks, even as the impact of theIran warcontinues to choke off oil supply.
The national average price of a gallon of gas stood at $4.26 on Wednesday, marking a decline of 30 cents, or 6.5%, since a recent peak on May 21.
Still, prices remain well above where they clocked in before a historicoil shockset off by the war. In late February, the average gallon of gas ran less than $3.
The dropoff in gas prices owes to a decline in oil costs over the latter part of last month, which coincided with a slump in demand following Memorial Day weekend, some analysts said.
Still, they cautioned, gas prices may rise again as oil prices jump and the war shows little sign of an imminent resolution. If the war continues, some analysts said, gas price could top $5 a gallon by next month.
"It's so volatile," Patrick Penfield, a professor of supply chain practice at Syracuse University, told ABC News. "If the war ended, prices would likely go down. But if it continues,…

In the 10 days since the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, there's been some relief at the pump.
The national average for a gallon of gas now sits at $3.90.
That drop comes as the price of Brent crude oil has fallen significantly since the ceasefire was extended, but gas prices are not falling as quickly.
Experts say prices are unlikely to return to pre-war levels until next year at the earliest.

Gas prices fall below $4 per gallon as oil supply fears ease after Iran deal
Gasoline prices fell below $4 per gallon Thursday, as oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz are expected to increase after PresidentDonald Trumpsigneda deal to end the war with Iran.
Drivers in the U.S. paid $3.99 on average, the first time prices have dropped below $4 since March 30, according to data shared by AAA.
Prices have fallenthe past 28 days in a row after peaking at $4.56 on May 21. It is the longest consecutive price decline since November 2023.
Trump signaled for weeks that a deal with Iran was coming, which has helped keep oil prices for surging higher. The U.S. Navy has also been assisting oil tankers through Hormuz since early May.
But gas prices are still 30% higher compared with what drivers paid before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran effectively closed Hormuz in retaliation by attacking commercial ships.
The closure of Hormuz triggered the biggest oil supply disruption in history. About 20% of global oil supplies passed through the strait before the war.
The U.S.-Iran deal is expected to gradually increase oil exports through Hormuz, though its unclear when…

and congressional Republicans are betting the oil-price shock sparked by the Iran crisis will be too short-lived to hurt them politically in November, but traders and industry analysts see signs that U.S. pump prices will stay painfully high long after any diplomatic breakthrough.
Oil prices have surged as the Iran conflict has disrupted global supply. U.S. crude topped $100 a barrel for the first time since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine shock. U.S. diesel climbed above $5 a gallon, its highest since late 2022.
The disruptions stem in large part from Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, an action it took in response to U.S. and Israeli strikes launched against Iran on February 28. The Strait is a choke point through which roughly one-fifth of global oil normally flows.
Trump has repeatedly said the higher energy costs are a small price to pay for neutralizing Iran. On Tuesday, he again predicted energy prices would "drop like…

To say gas prices have been unpredictable this year would be an understatement.

The average cost of a gallon this year peaked in May at $4.56, and plunged as low as $2.79 in January, the organization reported.
Oil prices have spiked around the world in recent months after the U.S. and Israel launched a war on Iran, which has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. But the on-and-off hostilities have done more than simply raise gas prices in a straight line — they've caused gas to become more expensive one week, only for the price to fall the next. Prices go up when fighting rekindles or the strait is closed, and drop when peace talks resume. They're climbing again after Trump said the tenuous ceasefire was over.
Now, drivers are unsure of what price they'll find…
