FIFA World Cup 2026: Iran President accuses US of "bending rules, bullying rivals, creating obstacles, cheating"
Tehran [Iran], July 8 : Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian has launched a scathing attack on the United States and the handling of the FIFA World Cup 2026, accusing the host nation of "bending rules", "bullying rivals" and "cheating" amid a series of controversies that have overshadowed the tournament's knockout stage.
In a post on X, Pezeshkian linked the latest disputes surrounding the World Cup to what he described as Washington's broader foreign policy approach.
"The U.S. government's conduct as World Cup host follows its familiar foreign policy: bending rules, bullying rivals, creating obstacles, and cheating. This is their MAGA playbook. Iran rejects su…

Paulo Alexandre Araujo, a physiotherapist, has worked with the world’s top soccer players. But nothing, he said, could prepare him for the conditions he faced assisting Iran’s national team at the World Cup.
The U.S. government imposed strict time limits for Iran, forcing the team to immediately leave the stadium, and United States territory, after playing its World Cup games there, Mr. Araujo, a member of the Iran delegation, said. After the team’s opener against New Zealand, Mr. Araujo bandaged players on the aircraft ride back to their home base in Mexico, a treatment, he said, that would normally be carried out in the locker room. No other teams at the World Cup face the same restrictions.
Under the United States government’s time limits, Iran’s delegation is allowed into the country a day before a game and, afterward, has just enough time to reach the airport to depar…

Iran coach says team ordered out of US right after 2-2 draw with New Zealand in World Cup opener - ABC News
The coach of Iran’s World Cup team says it was ordered to leave the U.S. and return to its training base in Mexico only a few hours after opening its politically charged tournament by playing to a 2-2 draw with New Zealand
INGLEWOOD, Calif. --The coach of Iran'sWorld Cupteam said it was ordered to leave the U.S. and return to its training base in Mexico only a few hours after opening its politically charged tournament by playing to a 2-2 draw with New Zealand on Monday night.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei didn't say who ordered the Iranians to leave earlier than planned. The team had expected to spend the night in California to maximize the normal recovery process after its opening game, only to be told after the match that everyone must immediately get on a plane for the 140-mile trip back to Tijuana.
“They didn’t even give us time to recover,” Ghalenoei said through an interpreter. “After the game today, they said to us, ‘You have to leave immediately.’ It’s very important for us to have time for recovery, (but) we are asked to get on a plane and return to our camp in Tijuana, a…

Tehran [Iran], June 29 (ANI): Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei praised the Iranian national football team following their FIFA World Cup exit, commending their unity, resilience, and determination despite facing what he described as "pressure, discrimination, and restrictions."
He said the team refused to be discouraged by difficulties, continued to compete with spirit and integrity, and kept hope alive until the end. Baqaei added that beyond results, the team's performance brought pride, emotion, and unity to the nation, serving as a reminder of their shared identity and love for Iran.
Iran were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the group stage after a 1-1 draw with Egypt, coupled with a 3-3 draw between Austria and Algeria in the other final group match, which confirmed their exit from the tournament.

The Athletic has live coverage ofAlgeria vs Austriaat the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi has criticised FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino for their handling of his country’s World Cup campaign.
After a third group stage draw left Iran waiting on other results before they learn whether they have progressed to the round of 32, Taremi described the World Cup’s logistical challenges as a “disaster”.

Taremi and the rest of his teammates were due to fly out of Seattle and return to Tijuana in Mexico following the game. The team had initially been due to be based in Tucson, Arizona during the tournament, but moved their base camp to Mexico at the end of May as the military conflict between the United States and Iran continued. The war began on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel targeted Iran with military strikes that killed their supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting Iran to launch retaliatory strikes.

A leading U.S. politician in the Trump administration says he did a “happy dance” and “sung a song or two” to celebrate Iran’s exit from the World Cup.
Iran was knocked out of the World Cup after drawing all three of its group games, concluding in a 1-1 draw against Egypt which saw Shojae Khalilzadeh’s injury-time goal ruled out by VARfor a tight offside call.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin welcomed that outcome when addressing reporters during a World Cup briefing at the government’s Special Event Coordination Center on Monday. “I’m just glad they’re done, and they’re not coming back,” Mullin said, as reported bySports Business Journal. “I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the U.S. soil, and I might’ve sung a song or two or maybe even danced a happy dance.”
Mullin added he was “very happy they’re going back because there wasn’t a single team that we dealt with more than them.”

Iran
's national football team has been a lightning rod for opponents of the Islamic Republic, but a spirited display against New Zealand on Tuesday won over many in attendance.
Ask the average person about the power of the
World Cup
and they are likely to recall a moment when a nation united behind a football team that represented citizens of all backgrounds.
Iran's Team Melli once held that power, but in recent years the team has become almost as polarising as the politics that dominate much of Iranian life.
"My first memory with the sport is watching Iran beat the United States at the 1998 World Cup. I was at my grandparent's house in Tehran and everyone was in the streets celebrating," Sina, 27, a Team Melli fan, told Middle East Eye.
In a bygone era, support for the national side was one of the few things that united Iranians, whether young or old, religious or secular, supportive of the government or opposed to it.

'A disaster': Iran at the World Cup — expelled, oppressed and still ...
When Iran reached the locker room after their tense 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday, bouncing back twice from a goal down, they were informed of a late change in travel plan. They wouldn’t be staying in Los Angeles for the night, as was planned earlier, but would fly back to their training camp across the border in Mexico’s Tijuana.
The match ended at 8 pm local time, the team left for the airport at 10 pm, and the flight was scheduled at 11 pm. The reason for the late rescheduling is unclear, although the order came from FIFA.
Iran’s war with the US has officially ended, with PresidentDonald Trumpannouncing that the “deal’s all signed”. But the battles that Iran’s football team has been waging in the tournament and its build-up continue.“Our team is the most oppressed one in the whole World Cup,” Amir Ghalenoei, the head coach, fumed before leaving.
“They have said we have to leave immediately. We are really troubled by that. We don’t know why they are returning us, to be honest. It seems very strange. It seems others are doing the planning for us,” he said during the post-match press conference.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Iran captain Mehdi Taremi says his team is having a challenging World Cup experience amid the multifold disruptions created by their nation’s war with the U.S., the tournament’s co-host.
The Iranians arrived in the Los Angeles area Sunday from their training base in Tijuana, Mexico, just over the U.S. border about 140 miles from the stadium where they will open group-stage play against New Zealand on Monday night. Iran’s training camp was relocated from the U.S. after the war began, and the Iranian team has endured numerous distractions since then, including visa problems.
“I have felt the tension from the first moment we arrived at this World Cup,” Taremi said through an interpreter. “At any tournament when there is tension, we won’t have the same beautiful experience we always talk about with peace and joy. … I know it wasn’t just us. I know several countries had visa problems and changes with training camps. Before we arrived, the feeling, the sensation people always have, how they look forward to the World Cup, I think this time maybe they haven’t had the same feeling.”

The message, posted minutes after Iran held 10-man Belgium to a goalless draw in Los Angeles, drew a direct parallel between the team’s defensive performance on the pitch and the recent war of aggression against the country.
Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was the hero of the match, making several crucial saves to deny the star-studded Belgian lineup featuring Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
The Iranian defense held firm despite Belgium’s possession dominance, and Belgium’s hopes were dealt a blow when defender Nathan Ngoy was sent off for bringing down Iran striker Mehdi Taremi.
The Iranian team has been competing under extraordinary circumstances.

Iran World Cup Exit: Heartbreak, Controversy and Pride as Team Melli ...
Fans in Mexico and the diaspora say Team Melli leaves as symbols of hope, not defeat
TIJUANA, Mexico: The Iranian national team left North America on Tuesday, departing from its World Cup home in Mexico following a tournament marked by repeated disagreements with US officials, flashes of athletic brilliance and, ultimately, disappointment over barely missing out on advancing beyond the group stage.
The players return to a homeland still in the grips of an unresolved conflict with Israel and the United States.
But their fans say they should be proud.
“I think even though they lost, it gave people a sense of hope,” said Mohammad Modarres, 38, who traveled from San Diego to bid the team farewell.
After its three group stage matches ended in draws, Iran's World Cup future depended on either Algeria or Austria winning their match on Saturday.
Watching from the lobby of their Tijuana hotel, the team erupted in celebration when Algeria took the lead in stoppage time.
“I've never seen a room explode like that,” said Kimia Ranjbar, 25, a lifelong fan of Team Melli who had driven down from the Los Angeles area.

'Oppressed' Iran forced to leave U.S. after New Zealand draw - ESPN
INGLEWOOD, Calif. --Irancoach Amir Ghalenoei called his team perhaps the "most oppressed team in the whole World Cup" after he said Iran have been forced to leave Los Angeles and return to their training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, immediately after their opening match.
After perhaps the most strained buildup for any team in the long history of theWorld Cup, Iran finally took the pitch Monday at SoFi Stadium, drawing2-2withNew Zealandin their politically charged opener.
But Ghalenoei began his postgame news conference by expressing his unhappiness that the team's travel plans -- a return to Mexico on Tuesday -- had been changed at the last minute.
Iran's base camp was moved to Tijuana from Arizona weeks before the tournament, despite all three of their group games taking place in the United States.
The team was scheduled to fly to the U.S. two days before each game, before departing the following day.
However, Iran traveled to Los Angeles on Sunday and have said their travel plans were altered again following Monday's game.

Iran denied by VAR in stoppage time, draw 1-1 with Egypt at World Cup 2026
“After review”.
Two words from Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, and the hearts of an entire nation broke. Moments before, Shojae Khalilzadeh had fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the six-yard box, whipped off his shirt and slid on his knees to the touchline. Someone handed him a pair of sunglasses. A member of Iran’s backroom staff collapsed flat on the turf. Another leaned in and kissed Khalilzadeh on the forehead. The bench had emptied. Seven World Cups. Never through. Until now, they thought.
Offside. Goal ruled out. Yasser Ibrahim then made a monumental block to deny Rezaeian’s shot after the ball squirted free. Iran had not won a single corner of the match until the 88th minute, and now, six minutes and 53 seconds into stoppage time, Saeid Ezatolahi sent a header against the crossbar. The game was more than 100 minutes old when Marciniak finally called time. Iran’s head coach Amir Ghalenoei slumped in his dugout and did not move for more than fifteen minutes.
Three draws from three games. Seven World Cups, still no knockout stage. Not yet, anyway.

Iran’s World Cup 2026 campaign is over, but the team’s farewell has sparked an outpouring of support that stretches far beyond the results on the pitch.
Team Melli exited the tournament unbeaten after three draws, including a 1-1 result against Egypt in Seattle. But Iran’s goodbye came with a final moment of heartbreak: defender Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to have scored a stoppage-time winner that could have transformed their qualification hopes, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.
The decision sparked a fierce debate among fans online, many of whom argued that the call was so marginal as to be out of the spirit of the game.
Iran finished with three points and had to wait for results elsewhere. When Austria struck a last-gasp equaliser against Algeria the following day, both teams went through, and Iran was eliminated.
FIFA's president Infantino was right about one thing — Iran played well, united the world, and made everyone proud. Everything else was a lie. He knew they were harassed. He did nothing. But he did help push them out of the World Cup. 🇮🇷

Iran bows out amid World Cup chaos and criticism - EWN
The curtains have closed on Iran's turbulent World Cup campaign, but the echoes of their frustrations are louder than their departure. While the team was ultimately eliminated on Saturday, watching their fate decided by the results of other matches from their base in Tijuana, Mexico, the narrative surrounding their tournament has been defined by logistical nightmares and sharp condemnations of FIFA.
Speaking in the mixed zone following a 1-1 draw against Egypt, star forward Mehdi Taremi did not mince words, labelling the tournament a " disaster". Taremi's grievances centred on the gruelling travel requirements imposed on the team. Due to visa restrictions, the Iranian squad was forced to base itself in Tijuana, necessitating constant, exhausting travel for matches without adequate time for recovery.
Taremi expressed deep frustration with FIFA, alleging that leadership had promised to address these challenges but ultimately failed to act. "They don't have a visa," Taremi said of his team's essential logistics staff.

In March 2025, Team Melli became one of the first countries to qualify for the World Cup, and the following year was spent focusing on the sort of things that fans focus on: the team, the coach, the draw, getting tickets.
Then, at the end of February 2026, the United States and Israel launched attacks on a range of targets in Iran, killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and everything changed.

Inglewood, Calif.
— The coach of Iran's World Cup team said it was ordered to leave the U.S. and return to its training base in Mexico only a few hours after opening its politically charged tournament by playing to a 2-2 draw with New Zealand on Monday night.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei didn't say who ordered the Iranians to leave earlier than planned. Iran Might Be The Unluckiest Sports Team Ever - TIME
Athletes often attempt to hide their emotions, especially in their dealings with the press. Put on a brave face and all. Ramin Rezaeian, a defender for the Iranian World Cup soccer team, was having none of that on Friday night in Seattle.
Minutes after Iran played to a thrilling, though for Rezaeian and his teammates heartbreaking,
1-1 draw against Egypt
, Rezaeian didn’t bother masking his pain. While on the verge of tears while meeting with reporters at Seattle Stadium, Rezaeian said he couldn’t believe that a game-winning goal scored by Iran’s Shoja Khalilzadeh, in the third minute of stoppage time, was called offside after an
incredibly nitpicky technological review.
An Iran victory would have put
Team Melli
into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in Iran’s history. Adding to Rezaeian’s agony, right before the final whistle another potential clincher, a header from Khalilzadeh, hit the crossbar. “I can't see any luck in my team,” said a distraught Rezaeian.
One could only imagine how Rezaeian and his teammates felt some 24 hours later, when Iran’s fortunes, incredibly, got even worse.

Dozens of Iranians arrived at SoFi Stadium to protest the team playing in the World Cup and calling for sanctions on the federation. Lolita Lopez reports for NBC4 at 3 p.m. on June 15, 2026.
Watch parties and protests were planned for Monday in Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian American community outside of Iran, when the country’s national soccer team plays in the World Cup in Inglewood in a collision of sports and world events.
A protest was held outside the Los Angeles Stadium, as it will be called during the global soccer tournament, hours ahead of Iran’s Group D match against New Zealand. Organizers said the rally was an effort to voice opposition to the Iran regime's persecution of athletes and political prisoners.

Managing one distraction at the World Cup is hard enough.
As Iran's 2-2 World Cup-opening draw against New Zealand showed, Team Melli have to handle two: the fallout from the armed conflict between Iran and the United States, and the adjacent division between Iranian-American fans who support or oppose the current Iranian government.
"Everything is like disaster actually, for us," Iran and Olympiacos striker Mehdi Taremi admitted. "It's not the right thing. But we don't follow the excuse. We just looking forward. We (are) having hope for the next two games. We'll do our best for our people and bring the joy for our supporters."
The international conflict forced Iran to relocate its tournament base camp to Tijuana, Mexico, and make only short trips to the United States for three s…

Iran have slammed their 'oppressive' and 'disastrous' treatment during this World Cup, claiming they are being kicked out of the US immediately after their opening game on Monday night.
In an extraordinary attack following their 2-2 draw with New Zealand inLos Angeleson Monday, striker Mehdi Taremi pleaded with FIFA to 'help' resolve their 'unfair' World Cup ordeal.
Prior to the tournament kicking off, it had been agreed that Iran - who play all of their group stage matches in the USA - would fly in and out of the country on matchday.
Since war broke out in February, uncertainty has surrounded Iran's participation at the World Cup.
Donald Trumpwarned them not to come – for their 'own life and safety', while Iran moved its base fromArizonato Mexico. Nearly a dozen members of its delegation were later denied visas.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino visited the Iran dressing room following the game and just minutes later, head coach Amir Ghalenoei and Taremi suggested the US authorities are f…

Iran's football team faced immense logistical challenges and intrusive security measures during their World Cup campaign in the US, drawing 2-2 against New Zealand. Players expressed frustration over the "disaster" of unfair competition due to these issues. Not everybody was happy aout the tie.
The Iranian National team certainly gave its supporters something to be proud of this week.
During 101 minutes of action in Los Angeles, Iran was finally able to focus on something other

Iran opened its politically charged

The national anthem was booed, and an Iranian player was forced to defend himself over a ‘gun’ celebration. Mohammad Mohebbi snatched a point for Iran in the 64th minute and appeared to do a ‘finger gun’ gesture during his celebration.

ehran [Iran], June 29 (ANI): Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei praised the Iranian national football team following their FIFA World Cup exit, commending their unity, resilience, and determination despite facing what he described as 'pressure, discrimination, and restrictions.'

He said the team refused to be discouraged by difficulties, continued to compete with spirit and integrity, and kept hope alive until the end. Baqaei added that beyond results, the team’s performance brought pride, emotion, and unity to the nation, serving as a reminder of their shared identity and love for Iran.
Iran were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the group stage after a 1-1 draw with Egypt, coupled with a 3-3 draw between Austria and Algeria in the other final group match, which confirmed their exit from the tournament.

What did Iran leave behind in the LA locker room after Belgium draw?
Iran left a message in their SoFi Stadium locker room on Sunday, thanking Los Angeles for its hospitality during the World Cup and saying they are leaving with dignity after a 0-0 draw with Belgium kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Los Angeles hosted both of Iran's Group G matches so far, with the team returning to their base in Tijuana, Mexico, between games.
The Iranian team have spent the tournament based in Tijuana commuting to the US for their matches because of restrictions surrounding their stay in the country, while a number of Iran's team staff and officials have been banned.
US officials have said the squad's travel arrangements would continue to be assessed, while discussions over easing some restrictions have continued.
"From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilised Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast," read the handwritten note, which was released by Iran's football federation.
"Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality. "We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour, and leave with dignity."

Iran were forced to leave Los Angeles and return to their base in Mexico immediately after their World Cup opener against New Zealand, a decision head coach Amir Ghalenoei has publicly criticised.
It has been a turbulent build-up to this summer's
World Cup
for Iran. In fact, there were
doubts as to whether the country would even participate
in the 48-team tournament amid the Middle East conflict.
The team has faced visa problems and had to relocate their base camp after the US refused to host them, while
FIFA
cited logistical issues in turning down Iran's request to move their three group stage matches to Mexico.
On Monday, they got their Group H underway with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles.

Iran’s national team played on U.S. soil for the first time in 26 years, playing to a 2-2 tie with New Zealand in front of a roaring, politically-charged, near-sellout crowd at SoFi Stadium.
For one Los Angeles teacher and youth coach whose political dissident father was executed in Evin Prison, cheering Iran meant honoring happier childhood memories and empathizing with the players.
Unprecedented sports feats and historical firsts are usually joyous affairs. Something to celebrate, fun trivia to tuck away for later.
On Monday in Inglewood, the history was much more fraught, and not at all trivial.
