US orders Anthropic to pull new AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 just 72 hours after launch.

Anthropic had barely finished celebrating the launch of Claude Fable 5 — its most powerful AI model ever made available to the public — when the US government ordered it gone. Just 72 hours after the model's release on 9 June, the Commerce Department issued an emergency export control directive that forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and its restricted sibling, Mythos 5, for every user worldwide.
The
directive
arrived at 5:21 PM ET on Friday, 12 June. It ordered the company to immediately suspend access to both models for all foreign nationals — a category that covered not just users outside the United States, but also non-citizen employees working inside Anthropic itself. Unable to verify the citizenship of every user in real time, Anthropic made the call to shut both models down entirely.
What Triggered the Ban
The chain of events that led to the shutdown reportedly began with Amazon. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other senior administration officials that Amaz…

Why Did the US Gov Ban Fable 5? The Full Anthropic Story - explainx.ai
On June 9, 2026, Anthropic launched
Fable 5 and Mythos 5
to extraordinary fanfare. Three days later, the US government ordered the company to take them both offline — immediately, for every user on earth.
But the story of why this happened did not begin on June 12. It began months earlier, in a Pentagon conference room, in a lawsuit filed in federal court, and in a controversy about a feature Anthropic built into Fable 5 that it later had to walk back in embarrassment. To understand why Fable 5 was banned, you need all of it.
What Happened: The Full Timeline
July 2025
— Anthropic signs a deal with the Pentagon that would make Claude the first frontier AI model approved for use on classified networks. It is a landmark moment — a signal that Anthropic has passed national security trust thresholds that no other frontier lab had cleared.
February 2026
— The deal collapses. The Pentagon wants to renegotiate, demanding Anthropic allow military use of Claude "for all lawful purposes" — including lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance of Americans. Anthropic refuses. The negotiations end.

Statement on the US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Jun 12, 2026
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for
all
our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Anthropic models
will not be affected.
We received the directive from the government today at 5:21pm (ET). The letter did not provide specific details of its national security concern. Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking” Fable 5. We reviewed a demonstration of this specific technique being used to identify a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities all appear relatively simple, and we have found that other publicly-available models are able to discover them as well without requiring a by…

White House to Anthropic: Do this if you want to release Fable 5 model outside US
The US government has issued an ultimatum to AI firm Anthropic: fix security flaws in its advanced models or face continued restrictions. Following an NSA investigation confirming 'jailbreaking' vulnerabilities, officials demand the company proactively patch its AI, which could otherwise be weaponized. Experts, however, question the feasibility of completely eliminating such loopholes.

Key Points
After a two-week suspension, the U.S. government has lifted export controls on Anthropic's second most powerful AI model, Fable 5, making it available worldwide again.
The less restricted version, Mythos 5, remains limited to a select group of U.S. organizations.
Anthropic has trained a new filter that blocks such requests as a fix, but the filter also rejects harmless programming tasks more often.
After a two-week ban, the US government is letting Anthropic ship its most powerful AI model globally again.
Fable 5 is back worldwide starting today through the Claude Platform,
Claude.ai
, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans include the model through July 7 at up to 50 percent of weekly usage limits. After that, it'll be billed through usage credits. Access on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry will be restored "as quickly as possible."

Anthropic completely shut off access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models Friday night, just days after they were launched.
The move comes after Anthropic’s receipt of a US Commerce Department directive Friday evening, subjecting the new models to export controls restricting their use anywhere outside the United States. In

White House move to limit Anthropic linked to concerns about Chinese ...
The White House imposed export controls on Anthropic’s powerful Mythos AI model partly over suspicions that a China-linked group had accessed it, a person familiar with the matter said.
The Trump administration on Fridaydirected Anthropicto limit access to Mythos, and its consumer version, known as Fable 5, to US citizens. That meant that even Anthropic employees who are foreign nationals would have been prohibited from using the models. Anthropic chose to remove the models from the market completely.
Anthropic tightly controlled the release of Mythos, which was launched in April, limiting access to a select group of companies that could use it to plug security holes. The plan was to ensure its capabilities wouldn’t make it into the hands of hackers. Anthropic has said Mythos represents a danger to the public because of its ability to find bugs in computer code, which could be exploited by malicious actors.
It’s unclear how the White House learned of the issue, which organization accessed the model, and how it gained access to Mythos.
But if the Chinese government had access to Mythos, it could pose natio…

Fable 5, part of Anthropic’s Claude family of AI systems,
was forced offline June 12
alongside its sibling Mythos 5 model after senior administration officials said that the models posed severe cybersecurity risks and that
Anthropic’s leadership did not sufficiently recognize their concerns
.
The close scrutiny and temporary ban of Anthropic’s most advanced models marks a stark departure from the administration’s previous hands-off approach, a sign that AI systems have grown powerful enough to merit substantial government oversight.

filing lawsuits
against the Trump administration.
