Head prefect, stockman, justice of the peace and marriage celebrant - the colourful life of Josie Murray, the grandmother of missing boy Gus Lamont, has been revealed in a court case over a firearms offence.
Murray, whose four-year-old grandson vanished from her homestead in South Australia's Far North in September 2025, was fined $10,500 in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.
She had pleaded guilty to possessing a silencer for a .22 rifle after the court heard the 75-year-old had a previous conviction involving the theft of unsecured firearms by a fugitive.
Defence lawyer Andy Ey told magistrate Roderick Jensen that he would "address the elephant in the room".
"It's been an extremely difficult time for my client. A grandchild went missing on the property late last year," he said.
"This has been a very, very difficult time for the family, trying to get through as best they can."
Gus Lamont was last seen by one of his grandmothers playing at the family homestead at Oak Park Station on September 27.
On February 5, police declared the boy's disappearance a major crime and said someone living at the remote station was a suspect in the case and his likely death.

The court heard the item was discovered during a police search last year, but prosecutors stressed the charge has no connection to the investigation into Gus’ disappearance.
Murray was convicted and fined $10,500 for owning the gun accessory. The fine was less than the possible maximum penalty of $15,000 because of the early guilty plea.

Josie Murray, grandparent of Gus Lamont, has been charged with gun offences at the property where the child went missing.
South Australian Police said officers had been conducting inquiries and a renewed search at the Lamont family's remote Oak Park Station, about 40km south of Yunta, in connection with the disappearance of Gus.
'As a result of a previous search at Oak Park Station, Task Force Horizon detectives have today arrested a 75-year-old from Grampus and charged them with firearm offences,' a spokesperson said on Monday.
'They have been bailed to appear in the Peterborough Magistrates Court on May 6.'
Acting Officer in Charge of MajorCrimeInvestigation Branch Detective Inspector Andrew Macrae said that the charges are not related to the disappearance of the four-year-old.
He added that the charges were also not connected to an incident with a journalist who attended the property in October 2025.

'Buried': Gus Lamont's grandmother's shock revelation about police theory
Gus Lamont’s grandmother has revealed that she is the police’s “main suspect” in the little boy’s disappearance and that detectives believed she buried him after he died in an accident.
Gus vanished from his family’s Oak Park Station, near Yunta in the South Australian outback, on September 27 in what
has become one of the country’s biggest missing persons cases.
Speaking for the first time about the mystery, grandmother Josie Murray on Sunday told Seven’s
Spotlight
that she denied that she had anything to do with the 4-year-old’s disappearance.
Murray detailed how her family frantically searched for Gus in fading light and said she believed police missed evidence of another person being on the property.
She told the programme that she was the “main suspect” and had been told by police that they believed that they had buried him after Gus had died in an accident.

The grandparent of missing four-year-old Gus Lamont has been fined A$10,500 for possession of a gun silencer at the family's Oak Park Station in South Australia's far north.
Josie Rachelle Murray, 75, was charged in February, just a short time after police declared her grandson's disappearance a major crime.
Police previously said the firearms offence was not related to Gus's disappearance.
The 75-year-old has also been banned from holding or obtaining a firearms licence for five years.
SA Police confirmed last month that one of Gus's grandparents remained a suspect in his disappearance.
Both grandparents previously released a statement saying the family had co-operated with the investigation and wanted nothing more than to re-unite Gus with his parents.
