At the annual G7 summit taking place this week in Évian-les-Bains, France,
critical minerals
have returned to the spotlight, with stockpiling and supply chain diversification emerging as leading strategies under discussion.
The G7 has framed its agenda around the theme of reducing global imbalances — a direct reference to curbing
China
’s dominance in critical mineral supply chains and ensuring more equitable access to strategic resources.
Since the commencement of this week’s meetings, the G7 has made an overarching
statement
for the group’s support and promotion of supply chain resilience and diversification across the energy, digital infrastructure, and transportation sectors.
The G7 has highlighted that shared global prosperity hinges on reliable critical mineral value chains and that the group aims
“to harness the economic potential of critical mineral value creation through international cooperation along the supply chain and mutually beneficial partnerships based on high standards, transparency, and local value creation”.
It urges global leaders to work collaborativ…

New partnerships under the Critical Minerals Resilience and Production Alliance
First launched under Canada’s G7 Presidency in 2025, the broadened Critical Minerals Resilience and Production Alliance aims to expand critical minerals production and processing capacity in member countries and diversify supply chains from mine to market. By leveraging sovereign tools like stockpiling and fostering high-standard partnerships, the Alliance helps mobilise capital, accelerate project development, and promote innovation, economic growth, and shared prosperity. In addition to G7 members, Australia also
joined
the Alliance earlier this year.
During this year’s Summit, Canada welcomed 13 recent or new partnerships and initiatives with more than eight countries that will unlock more than $5 billion in capital expenditures for projects across the Can…

In June 2025 at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, G7 partners welcomed the Critical Minerals Production Alliance (the Alliance), a Canada-led G7 initiative that works with trusted international partners to foster the development of secure, resilient critical minerals supply chains and to counter market concentration and manipulation.
Represented by Envoys from each G7 country, the Alliance works to accelerate the development of projects that ensure secure supply for advanced manufacturing and defence, reduce vulnerabilities and counter supply chain concentration. By leveraging sovereign tools and fostering high-standard partnerships, the Alliance will mobilize capital, accelerate project development and promote innovation, economic growth and shared prosperity across G7 and international partner nations.
Canada and its G7 partners have appointed Envoys to the Critical Minerals Production Alliance who will lead efforts to accelerate critical mineral projects, strengthen global supply chains and advance sustainable resource development. The Critical Minerals Production Alliance Envoys are:
